YOUTH ASPIRE CONNECT

FOR THE 349 DAY PERIOD ENDED 31/03/2023

TRUSTEES' REPORT

PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES OBJECTIVES

The advancement of life of young people through the provision of educational and employment support and career mentorship, the promotion of the study of stem subjects (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), and the furtherance of any other charitable activities (according to the law of England and Wales) for the advancement of education as the trustees deem fit.

SUMMARY OF MAIN ACTIVITIES IN RETATION TO THE OBJECTIVES

To advance the provision of educational, employment and career support for young people from disadvantage backgrounds. We achieve this by providing employability/skills development training, weekly career mentorship sessions and creating social action opportunities to empower young people to become leaders and address barriers that limit their career prospects.

ACHIEVEMENTS PERFORMANCE

During the last one year, we have experienced huge number of young people accessing our services. We have over 300 young people in our network and majority of whom have directly benefitted from our educational, career, employment and leadership and mentorship support programmes.

We delivered range of indoor and outdoor programmes to inspire and empower young people to enhance their academic and career prospects while improving their mental health and wellbeing.

Aspire to Achieve scheme:

This project is designed to raise the aspiration of young people and to connect them to life-changing opportunities. We took 50 young people aged 11-16 years from low-income families to Oxford University in June 2022. The purpose of the trip was to grow their aspirations and connect them with other students from indigent families who are studying a the University of Oxford.

Anti-Racism in-school campaign

We are partnering with the Voice and Influence team at Hull City Council to support the former Young Mayor and other young people from Hull to educate the public and train teachers to recognise, challenge and deal with racism in classroom. The team have produced a flyer, train teachers and developed anti-racism in-school policy. The campaign team have met with the Lord Mayor and the leader of the Hull city council, which led to extra funding of the campaign to produce a film to influence wider audience which will be launched in October 2023.

Mental health and wellbeing:

We are collaborating with researchers from the University of Hull and the University of Hertfordshire to co-create interventions to normalise mental health conversations among BME communities. We have 11 young people from YAC who are part of the team. The project will help uncover the barriers to normalising mental health conversation and interventions will be developed to address it.

Youth mentorship

We ran a weekly youth career mentorship sessions to advise and support young people on career choices and university degree/apprenticeship options. We ran drop-in sessions and provided support with CV writing, personal statements, and cover letters. These services helped many of them to gain employment and admission into Higher Education.
