Chair's Report
As the chair of Saltdean Swim and Surf Club, I am delighted to share with you our annual report detailing the many successes we've celebrated over the past year. It has truly been an exciGng period of growth and community engagement for our club.
This year, we have seen our membership numbers surge, a testament to the hard work and dedicaGon of our voluntary team in helping deliver safe and enjoyable experiences for our community.
The heart of our club is the local community, and we are proud to have delivered workshops and training sessions to over 900 children from our locality this season. These sessions have not only provided valuable skills and knowledge but also fostered a sense of camaraderie and belonging among our young parGcipants.
Our members' progression through the GB surf life-saving program is a source of immense pride. This achievement underscores the commitment and determinaGon of our members and the effecGveness of our training programs and we aim to conGnue this into the next season, training our members to be future lifeguards of our community.
None of these accomplishments would have been possible without the unwavering support of our donors, sponsors, and supporters. Our Crowdfunder campaign was a resounding success, thanks to our communiGes generous contribuGons. These funds, and those by other donors, have enabled us to conGnue our mission and expand our reach in the community by securing more equipment and further training for volunteers to ensure our members stay safe, are encouraged, moGvated and supported in and around our beach environment.
As we conGnue to grow and evolve, we remain commiRed to providing a safe and welcoming environment for all members of our community.
Last but certainly not least, I must express my hearTelt graGtude to our volunteers who give their Gme and energy every weekend to deliver these sessions. Their Greless efforts have been instrumental in achieving our goals.
We look forward to building on these successes in the coming year and further strengthening our Ges with the community.
Thank you for your conGnued support.
Yours sincerely,
MaR Coyne, Chair, Saltdean Swim and Surf Club

Review of AcDviDes and Achievements
This secGon highlights our acGviGes and achievements over the past season.
The Power of Community with Saltdean Swim & Surf Club
Saltdean Swim & Surf Club was born out of the pandemic by volunteers and has grown from delivering Royal Life Saving Society training at Saltdean Lido to 15 children to providing sessions and workshops to over 900 children from the surrounding Saltdean community (Ovingdean, Woodingdean, Ro^ngdean, Saltdean, Peacehaven & Newhaven).
We deliver Surf Life Saving Great Britain nipper, rookie and junior lifeguard training programs at Saltdean Beach and in Saltdean Lido for children from all backgrounds as well as supporGng other community clubs, iniGaGves and schools with educaGonal events and visits.
Saltdean Swim & Surf Club is commiRed to culGvaGng a feeling of safety and confidence in everyone who parGcipates in our programs, no maRer their background. We aim to enhance environmental consciousness and appreciaGon, all while ensuring a good dose of fun is included for all those that take part, including our team of 20+ volunteers.
As a member-focused club, we work closely with the community to offer acGviGes that promote health, fitness, and water safety ensuring our sessions are accessible to as many young people from the local community as possible.
Ring-fenced Funded Places
Saltdean Swim & Surf Club ring-fences a minimum of 20% of our annual membership spaces to ensure that those from disadvantaged backgrounds can take part in the rookie and junior lifesaving programs we deliver as well as support them with equipment (wetsuits and boards for example).
We understand that not all families have the resources to parGcipate in expensive water acGviGes, so we prioriGze offering funded spaces for those from disadvantaged backgrounds. This ensures that no child is lea behind and everyone has the chance to benefit from our programs and with hundreds of children from the local area benefi^ng from our free sessions at Saltdean Lido, we have delivered above 20% aRendance.
We also work with companies in the community to help support their CSR iniGaGves, such as Legal in General, donaGng money this year to secure wetsuit-related equipment was available to some children in the club, enabling them to safely take part in our beachside acGviGes and making sessions more accessible to all. Companies such as Complete Refurbishments kindly donated enough money to secure new lifeguard rescue boards to ensure we had adequate safety cover in the sea this last season, meaning more young people could take part.
At Saltdean Swim & Surf Club, we strongly believe in the power of community.
Our club not only provides an opportunity for children to learn important lifesaving skills, but also fosters a sense of belonging and connecGon amongst our members - when you're in the sea, we're all equal - every life maRers - every child maRers.
"It's the only day of the week where I don't have to shout to wake X up" said one parent.
This quote highlights the posiGve impact that being a part of Saltdean Swim & Surf Club can have on both children and families in the community. By creaGng a safe and inclusive space for all, we are able to bring people together and form strong bonds that extend beyond our sessions.
Our club also serves as a plaTorm for individuals to develop new skills, build confidence, and gain valuable experiences that will benefit them in their future endeavours. We are proud to see our members grow and thrive in water safety and as young leaders within our community.
Free Community Pool Life-Saving Sessions
As well as our ring-fenced membership fund, we deliver free sessions at Saltdean Lido every Friday from May through to September, which are FREE for any local children (of the correct age). Through

dedicated communicaGon channels with our local school, we encourage those from disadvantaged backgrounds to aRend.
The local school directly communicates with families who may require addiGonal support or funded opportuniGes and regularly meet with the school liaisons to help facilitate access to these sessions and ensure we are meeGng the needs of the children from our community who need it most.
Our commitment to the community doesn't stop there. We are passionate about promoGng environmental consciousness and appreciaGon amongst young people and that, irrespecGve of background, we all come together to protect and enjoy our coastline environment.
School and Community Group Sessions
Our aim for 2023 was to increase awareness amongst community groups and educaGonal se^ngs that may not normally aRend sessions such as ours.
Being able to target children from diverse backgrounds to learn a fun and safe respect for the sea, in 2023 we reached over 600 school aged children from the local community to run school and community group sessions, delivered by our qualified volunteer coaches and water safety team.
We believe that by working with schools (Saltdean Primary School and Ro^ngdean and Saltdean Scouts and Beavers for example), we can engage more young people that don't necessarily have access to beach or pool acGviGes and increase their awareness of sea safety.
In our acGviGes, we promote the importance of water safety and environmental awareness, equipping children with hands-on lifesaving skills and knowledge that can be used to help keep them safe in and around the sea.
We tailored sessions for schools, covering topics such as basic water safety, marine conservaGon, and surf lifesaving skills and, this year, worked with Saltdean Primary School and the RNLI in delivering a day of sea safety, educaGon and awareness to all children at Saltdean Primary School.
By delivering educaGon sessions such as these, it means, no maRer a child's background, we equip them with the skills, knowledge and confidence to stay safe in the water and become more environmentally conscious ciGzens.
In addiGon to our school sessions, we also offer community group sessions for organizaGons such as local scout groups, youth clubs, and other community groups. These sessions provide a fun and educaGonal experience for children while also promoGng important life-saving skills.
Through our various programs and iniGaGves, we hope to inspire future generaGons to be confident, responsible, and mindful individuals who care for both themselves and their environment.
Crowdfunding Equipment
In our quest to engage more youth in 2023, it was essenGal for us to procure extra funds. This would enable us to broaden our reach and make our sessions accessible to a more diverse group of young people. To achieve this, we iniGated a crowdfunding campaign with the goal of raising £15,000. These funds were earmarked for vital equipment such as rescue boards and rescue tubes, as well as for the training of our community volunteers who facilitate these sessions.
This fundraising endeavour resulted in us obtaining sufficient resources to expand our member base. We were able to provide addiGonal equipment to ensure that every child parGcipaGng had what they needed. The funds also ensured appropriate safety measures were in place by invesGng in extra training for our volunteers and equipment, so that as many members as possible could take part safely in our sea acGviGes.
Membership And Volunteers
Our youth membership increased in the last season. We grew from 20 "nippers" (aged 8-13) to 32 Nippers and 15 Juniors (13-16). This expansion was supported by our core volunteer team which increased from 8 to 24.
6 2023-24

Saltdean Swim & Surf Club Charity Report
Not only did we have more young people acGvely parGcipaGng, but we also had a larger team of dedicated volunteers who worked Grelessly every weekend to ensure the club ran smoothly and safely for all members. These volunteers play a crucial role in facilitaGng our sessions and ensuring the safety of all parGcipants.
Our waiGng list for membership grew this year and we are developing plans for the forthcoming season to try to ensure we can help as many young people as possible to access our sessions and we aim to increase our membership base again for the upcoming season.
AddiGonally, our dedicated team of volunteers grew in numbers, allowing us to provide an even higher level of support and instrucGon for our members and greater interest has been generated for those aiming to support the club and its members through forthcoming season. Our volunteers are passionate about water safety and community development, and their commitment and enthusiasm is what helps make our club so successful.
Community Partnerships
There has been a number of community groups working together to help make our sessions available and accessible to all young people in our local community. From our partnerships with our local primary school for example, where we have established a direct line of communicaGon with families who may require addiGonal support or opportuniGes to aRend our sessions to the Saltdean Community Charity which helped fund regular pool sessions at Saltdean Lido making it accessible to all in the community.
We aim to conGnue to work with and support Saltdean Lido CIC throughout the year and other community organizaGons over the next season to further develop our relaGonship with other local schools and community groups.
Through these partnerships, we hope to conGnue making a posiGve impact on the lives of young people in our community by providing them with opportuniGes for physical acGvity, water safety educaGon, and environmental awareness. By working together, we can create a stronger, more inclusive community that values the importance of both physical and mental well-being. We believe that by invesGng in our youth through these partnerships, we are creaGng a beRer future for everyone.
Training
We invested in one of our trustees becoming a SLSB Trainer Assessor, meaning we could deliver training courses and qualificaGons in-house.
This not only saved us money but also allowed us to tailor the training to meet our specific needs and goals, such as being able to sign off the young member's award schemes internally and training our volunteer water safety team, without the need for paying an external assessor.
Through the last season, we trained over 20 volunteers and signed off nippers and juniors on their Nipper Bronze and Silver pathways.
Equipment & Maintenance
Secured funds enabled us to secure enough equipment so that we could grow the club this last season. We conGnued to invest in new or recycled equipment, ensuring our members had access to the best and safest gear for their water and land based acGviGes and ensure we are spending chariGes money appropriately.
In addiGon to acquiring new equipment, we also dedicated resources to maintaining and repairing our exisGng equipment which not only ensures the safety of our members but also allows us to extend the lifespan of our equipment, reducing unnecessary waste and promoGng sustainability.
We are commiRed to conGnuously improving and invesGng in our equipment to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all members. This includes regular checks and maintenance, as well as upgrading equipment when necessary. Our goal is to provide the best possible resources for our members and volunteers while also being mindful of our impact on the environment.

Future Plans
We aim to create a safe and welcoming environment for all young people to learn about the sea and develop important skills.
Whilst we have enjoyed tremendous growth and engagement from many aspects of our community, we are constantly looking towards the future and ways in which we can conGnue to improve and expand our reach.
We not only aim to increase our regular membership base, but for the upcoming season, we plan to increase our focus on inclusivity and accessibility for young people throughout our community. We believe that everyone should have access to water safety and recreaGonal acGviGes, regardless of their background or abiliGes.
We also aim to conGnue working closely with schools and community groups to provide educaGon and awareness sessions, as well as expand our volunteer base through further training opportuniGes.
To ensure regular and easy access to training for our community, for the forthcoming season, we aim to secure suitable storage with easy access to our equipment and training resources for all in the community. This will allow us to efficiently provide training for our members and volunteers, as well as ensure the safety of our equipment.
Finally, we hope to conGnue our fundraising efforts to sustain and expand the resources needed for our acGviGes. We are grateful for the support we have received so far and look forward to conGnuing our mission of promoGng water safety, environmental awareness, and community development through our club. Together, we can make a posiGve impact on the next generaGon and create a safer future for all in our local communiGes.
Our Finances
The financial statements accompanying this report show net incoming resources for the club's acGviGes as from the accounGng period 01.04.23 – 31.03.24
Our principle source of income this last season was through donaGons, fundraising and club membership fees.
We also received generous donaGons from individuals and local businesses, as well as grants from community organizaGons. These contribuGons have allowed us to conGnue growing and providing valuable resources for our members.
We are commiRed to being transparent with our finances and ensuring that all funds are used effecGvely towards fulfilling our mission. As a charity organizaGon, we strive to maximize the impact of every donaGon and make sure that our budget reflects our values and goals.
We are always looking for ways to increase our revenue streams, whether it be through fundraising events or partnerships with local businesses. We also work diligently to keep our expenses low, ensuring that the majority of our funds go directly towards supporGng our acGviGes and members.
Before any monies of value £500 and above are spent, a forum of at least three trustees must approve, to ensure responsible spending. Otherwise the Chair and / or Vice Chair can approve spend and both act as signatories.

Yours sincerely,
MaR Coyne, Chair,
Saltdean Swim and Surf Club

Charity Structure, Governance and Management
The charity trustees are responsible for the overall management and control of the Saltdean Swim & Surf Club and meet monthly.
The work of implemenGng the club's policies is carried out by the trustees. No trustee or person connected with a trustee received any financial benefit from the club.
The charity is governed by a set of policies and procedures, including a safeguarding policy to ensure the safety and well-being of our members. We also have a code of conduct in place for all volunteers, members and families to uphold our values and create a posiGve environment for everyone.
We are commiRed to regularly reviewing and updaGng these policies to ensure that they reflect best pracGces and align with our mission and vision.
In addiGon to the trustees, we also have a dedicated team of volunteers who help with various aspects of the club's operaGons. These volunteers play an integral role in helping us achieve our goals and make a difference in the community.
We are constantly looking for ways to improve our governance and management structure, as well as engage more individuals in key roles within the charity. We value diversity and welcome individuals from all backgrounds to join our team and contribute their unique skills and perspecGves.
We believe that strong governance and effecGve management are crucial for the success of any charity and we are commiRed to upholding these standards to ensure the sustainability and growth of our organizaGon and aim to further training of our trustees over the coming seasons.
Overall, we are a dedicated team working towards a common goal - to create a safe, inclusive, and sustainable community through water-based acGviGes and we are commiRed to being a well-run and transparent charity that puts the needs of our community first. We welcome any feedback or suggesGons on how we can conGnue to improve and make a posiGve impact in our local communiGes.
