Chair's Report
As the chair of Saltdean Swim and Surf Club, I am delighted to share with you our annual report detailing the many successes we've celebrated over inaugural year. It has truly been an exciting period of growth and community engagement for our club and community.
This year, we introduced regular beach activities and training to our program, successfully delivered over the summer months, a testament to the hard work and dedication of our voluntary team in helping deliver safe and enjoyable experiences for our community.
The heart of our club is the local community, and we are proud to have delivered workshops and training sessions to over 200 children from our locality this season at Saltdean Lido and from Saltdean Beach. These sessions have not only provided valuable skills and knowledge but also fostered a sense of camaraderie and belonging among our young participants.
Our members began their journey through the GB surf life-saving program, something we are immensely proud of. Their achievement throughout the season underscores the commitment and determination of our members and the effectiveness of our training programs and we aim to continue this into the next season, in time, training our members to be future lifeguards for our community.
None of these accomplishments would have been possible without the unwavering support of our donors, sponsors, and supporters. These funds, and those by other donors, have enabled us to continue our mission and expand our reach in the community by securing more equipment and further training for volunteers to ensure our members stay safe, are encouraged, motivated and supported in and around our beach environment.
As we continue to grow and evolve, we remain committed to providing a safe and welcoming environment for all members of our community whether children members or adult volunteers and helpers.
We became a charity in 2022, and we are privileged to be able to add our name - Saltdean Swim & Surf Club- to the list of charities registered in England and Wales and hope that our work will continue to make a positive impact for years to come.
On behalf of the trustees, I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has supported us in our mission over the past year. Your generosity, guidance and encouragement have allowed us to achieve so much and we look forward to welcoming you back for another successful season.
Last but certainly not least, I must express my heartfelt gratitude to our volunteers who give their time and energy every weekend to deliver these sessions. Their tireless efforts have been instrumental in achieving our goals.
We look forward to building on these successes in the coming year and further strengthening our ties with the community.
Thank you for your continued support.
Yours sincerely,
Matt Coyne, Chair, Saltdean Swim and Surf Club

Review of Activities and Achievements
This section highlights our activities and achievements over the past season.
The Power of Community with Saltdean Swim & Surf Club
Saltdean Swim & Surf Club was born out of the pandemic by volunteers and has grown from delivering Royal Life Saving Society training at Saltdean Lido to 15 children to providing sessions and workshops to over 200 children from the surrounding Saltdean community (Ovingdean, Woodingdean, Rottingdean, Saltdean, Peacehaven & Newhaven).
This season, we delivered Surf Life Saving Great Britain nipper lifeguard training programs at Saltdean Beach and in Saltdean Lido combined SLSGB programmes with Royal Life Saving Society programmes, to enable children from all backgrounds to take part in the clubs activities and learn important lifesaving skills.
We aim to enhance environmental consciousness and appreciation, all while ensuring a good dose of fun is included for all those that take part, including our team of 20+ volunteers.
As a member-focused club, we work closely with the community to offer activities that promote health, fitness, and water safety ensuring our sessions are accessible to as many young people from the local community as possible.
Beach - SLSGB Lifesaver programs
This is the first year we introduced beach lifesaver programs to Saltdean Swim & Surf Club under the guidance of Surf Life Saving Great Britain.
Our volunteers underwent extensive training through the winter of 2021-2022 to ensure they were beach ready for the 2022 summer season with the club. This included first aid courses, Level 1 and Level 2 SLSGB coaching qualifications, Water Safety training (board and rescue tube) to ensure we could deliver safe and effective sessions for our members.
Extensive paperwork, risk assessments, planning and course structures were developed by our volunteers to ensure that all our sessions were safe, fun and engaging for our members.
We are proud to say that not only did our volunteers achieve their qualifications, but they also delivered successful beach programs with no report accidents or incidents. These programs not only taught valuable lifesaving skills, but also fostered a love for the beach and ocean in our members, building confidence in some and excelling in fitness in others.
These programs not only teach vital lifesaving skills in the water, but also educate on beach safety, environmental awareness, and leadership.
Through the 2022 season, we wanted to ensure we were equipped and trained to successfully deliver the SLSGB Nipper pathway, which would serve as a foundation for training for the club. We aim to expand on this for the 2023 season, adding Juniors (13-16) into the beach program.

Ring-fenced Funded Places
Saltdean Swim & Surf Club ring-fences 20% of our annual membership spaces to ensure that those from disadvantaged backgrounds can take part in the nipper lifesaving programs we deliver as well as support them with equipment (wetsuits and boards for example) and pool based activities.
We understand that not all families have the resources to participate in water based activities, so we offer funded spaces for those from those in our community who require assistance. This ensures that no child is left behind and everyone has the chance to benefit from our programs and with hundreds of children from the local area benefitting from our free sessions at Saltdean Lido, we have delivered above 20% participation target. We aim to better measure this impact in future years at the charity.
We also work with companies, charities and projects in the community to help support CSR initiatives, with Saltdean Community Charity, for example, helping to fund our pool based sessions.
At Saltdean Swim & Surf Club, we strongly believe in the power of community.
Our club not only provides an opportunity for children to learn important lifesaving skills, but also fosters a sense of belonging and connection amongst our members - when you're in the sea, we're all equal - every life matters - every child matters.
"It’s the only morning when I don’t have to play the alarm clock for X”sighed a relieved parent! It was the only day of the week the child didn’t need encouragement out of the house.
This quote highlights the positive impact that being a part of Saltdean Swim & Surf Club can have on both children and families in the community. By creating a safe and inclusive space for all, we are able to bring people together and form strong bonds that extend beyond our sessions.
Our club also serves as a platform for individuals to develop new skills, build confidence, and gain valuable experiences that will benefit them in their future endeavours. We are proud to see our members grow and thrive in water safety and as young leaders within our community.
Free Community Pool Life-Saving Sessions at Saltdean Lido
As well as our ring-fenced membership fund, we deliver free sessions at Saltdean Lido every Friday from May through to September, which are FREE for any local children (of the correct age). Through dedicated communication channels with our local school, we encourage those from disadvantaged backgrounds to attend.
The local school directly communicates with families who may require additional support or funded opportunities and regularly meet with the school liaisons to help facilitate access to these sessions and ensure we are meeting the needs of the children from our community who need it most.
Our commitment to the community doesn't stop there. We are passionate about promoting environmental consciousness and appreciation amongst young people and that, irrespective of background, we all come together to protect and enjoy our coastline environment.

Membership And Volunteers
We started the season with 20 Nipper members (aged 8-13) attending our regular Saturday morning beach sessions. This does not take into account the 200+ children we delivered sessions for at Saltdean Lido in our taster sessions. This expansion was supported by our core volunteer team which increased from 6 to 12.
Not only did we have more young people actively participating, but we also had a larger team of dedicated volunteers who worked tirelessly every weekend to ensure the club ran smoothly and safely for all members. These volunteers play a crucial role in facilitating our sessions and ensuring the safety of all participants.
Interest in the club and the waiting list for membership grew this year and we are developing plans for the forthcoming season to try to ensure we can help as many young people as possible to access our sessions and we aim to increase our membership base again for the upcoming season.
Additionally, our dedicated team of volunteers grew in numbers, allowing us to provide an even higher level of support and instruction for our members and greater interest has been generated for those aiming to support the club and its members through forthcoming season. Our volunteers are passionate about water safety and community development, and their commitment and enthusiasm is what helps make our club so successful.
Community Partnerships
There has been a number of community groups working together to help make our sessions available and accessible to all young people in our local community. From our partnerships with our local primary school for example, where we have established a direct line of communication with families who may require additional support or opportunities to attend our sessions to the Saltdean Community Charity which helped fund regular pool sessions at Saltdean Lido making it accessible to all in the community.
We aim to continue to work with and support Saltdean Lido CIC throughout the year and other community organizations over the next season to further develop our relationship with other local schools and community groups.
Through these partnerships, we hope to continue making a positive impact on the lives of young people in our community by providing them with opportunities for physical activity, water safety education, and environmental awareness. By working together, we can create a stronger, more inclusive community that values the importance of both physical and mental well-being. We believe that by investing in our youth through these partnerships, we are creating a better future for everyone.
Special thanks to these companies and groups that have supported our charity: Sussex Police, Telscombe town council, Chalk cliff trust, Deans optician, Saltdean Community Association, Brighton and Hove City Council, Sported.co.uk

Training
We invested in our core volunteer team training in the 2022-23 season because we firmly believe that continuous learning and development is key to ensuring the success of our club. We provided training on water safety, surf lifesaving skills, and first aid to ensure our volunteers are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to keep our members safe.
Through the last season, we trained 13 volunteers and signed off over 20 nippers on start of their SLSGB Nipper Bronze pathways. This consisted of 11Level 1 Coaches, 7 of which were also trained as Level-2 coaches and a qualified water safety and first aid team. We worked with Brighton SLSC, who supported us with training and sourcing lifeguards for our season.
Equipment & Maintenance
Part of the funds secured enabled us to source suitable equipment so that we could grow the club this season. We continued to invest in new or recycled equipment, ensuring our members had access to the best and safest gear for their water and land based activities and ensure we are spending charities money appropriately.
In addition to acquiring new equipment, we also dedicated resources to maintaining and repairing our existing equipment which not only ensures the safety of our members but also allows us to extend the lifespan of our equipment, reducing unnecessary waste and promoting sustainability.
We are committed to continuously improving and investing in our equipment to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all members. This includes regular checks and maintenance, as well as upgrading equipment when necessary. Our goal is to provide the best possible resources for our members and volunteers while also being mindful of our impact on the environment.
Future Plans
We aim to create a safe and welcoming environment for all young people to learn about the sea and develop important skills.
Whilst we have enjoyed our first season delivering sessions at Saltdean Beach, we are constantly looking towards the future and ways in which we can continue to improve and expand our reach.
We not only aim to increase our regular membership base, but to expand this to Junior members (1316) in the upcoming season. We also strive to continue our community partnerships and outreach efforts, as well as investing in training and equipment for our volunteers.
We aim to continue working closely with schools and community groups to provide education and awareness sessions, as well as expand our volunteer base through further training opportunities.
With the growing size of the club, we need to look at a more practical long term solution for storing our equipment in a convenient location to make it more accessible for all members of the community.
Finally, we hope to continue our fundraising efforts to sustain and expand the resources needed for our activities. We are grateful for the support we have received so far and look forward to continuing our mission of promoting water safety, environmental awareness, and community development through our club. Together, we can make a positive impact on the next generation and create a safer future for all in our local communities.

Treasurer Report
The financial statements show net incoming resources for the club's activities as from the accounting period 13.06.23 – 31.03.23
Our principle source of income this last season was through generous donations from the community as well as club membership fees.
We also received generous donations from individuals and local businesses, as well as grants from community organizations. These contributions have allowed us to continue growing and providing valuable resources for our members.
We are committed to being transparent with our finances and ensuring that all funds are used effectively towards fulfilling our mission. As a charity organization, we strive to maximize the impact of every donation and make sure that our budget reflects our values and goals.
During the period 13.06.22 to 31.03.23 the charity received grant income of £1,400 from Saltdean Community Association for lido pool sessions. Rebecca Coyne, wife of Matthew Coyne (Chair of Saltdean Swim and Surf Club) was a trustee of Saltdean Community Association. During the year £660 was spent on pool sessions and as at 31.03.23 £740 of the restricted funds were still held to be used for Pool sessions post year end.
We are always looking for ways to increase our revenue streams, whether it be through fundraising events or partnerships with local businesses. We also work diligently to keep our expenses low, ensuring that the majority of our funds go directly towards supporting our activities and members.
Before any monies of value £500 and above are spent, a forum of at least three trustees must approve, to ensure responsible spending.

Charity Structure, Governance and Management
The charity trustees are responsible for the overall management and control of the Saltdean Swim & Surf Club and meet monthly.
The work of implementing the club's policies is carried out by the trustees. All trustees give of their time freely and no remuneration or expenses were paid in the year. No trustee or person connected with a trustee received any financial benefit from the club.
The charity is governed by a set of policies and procedures, including a safeguarding policy to ensure the safety and well-being of our members. We also have a code of conduct in place for all volunteers, members and families to uphold our values and create a positive environment for everyone.
We are committed to regularly reviewing and updating these policies to ensure that they reflect best practices and align with our mission and vision.
In addition to the trustees, we also have a dedicated team of volunteers who help with various aspects of the club's operations. These volunteers play an integral role in helping us achieve our goals and make a difference in the community.
We are constantly looking for ways to improve our governance and management structure, as well as engage more individuals in key roles within the charity. We value diversity and welcome individuals from all backgrounds to join our team and contribute their unique skills and perspectives.
We believe that strong governance and effective management are crucial for the success of any charity and we are committed to upholding these standards to ensure the sustainability and growth of our organization and aim to further training of our trustees over the coming seasons.
Overall, we are a dedicated team working towards a common goal - to create a safe, inclusive, and sustainable community through water-based activities and we are committed to being a well-run and transparent charity that puts the needs of our community first. We welcome any feedback or suggestions on how we can continue to improve and make a positive impact in our local communities.
