TRUSTEES' REPORT

YEAR ENDED 31 JULY 2025

OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES

Our principal objective is to support dachshund, dachshund cross breeds and their owners whilst their dogs are suffering pain from IVDD, recovering, disabled or elderly. As well as providing equipment to aid their recovery/enrich their lives in their senior years, we also guide and support owners to make informed decisions with regards to emergency referral and treatment which may be needed. We are also committed to educating the public in matters pertaining to animal welfare and responsible ownership in general.

The Trustees confirm that the activities of the charity are undertaken to achieve the charity’s aims with regard to the public benefit guidance issued by The Charity Commission.

ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE

2024 - 2025 has been another extremely challenging year for us in terms of the volume of owners approaching us for guidance and support. We have noticed that there are a lot more Grade 5 Dachshunds going down with IVDD, with more wheelchairs this year being provided to owners. In the warmer months, we are seeing just as many, if not more, Dachshunds going down than in the winter months for all grades. In June 2025, we saw a record number of equipment loans on our list. We do, however, have a lot more owners contacting us for support and guidance who do not take up the offer of equipment. We are supporting them and giving advice as needed. Some have sadly lost their Dachshunds, so we continue to support them in the days and weeks following their sad loss.

With continuing rises in insurance premiums, we are finding many owners are not able to afford surgery as they have had to cancel or reduce the level of cover on their insurance policies. With the encouraging research results from Cambridge University on conservative rest, we can advise that this course of treatment is a good alternative. The new Queen Veterinary School Hospital Chondroitinase Injection Enzyme Trial for IVDD, headed by Paul Freeman, has now finished and the results have been published. The treatment is now being offered and is exclusive to QVSH, which is also encouraging for owners as it is another alternative treatment for those dogs that meet the criteria. We are hopeful that this new course of treatment at a much lower cost will be available soon at all referral hospitals, with training needed for other specialists to be rolled out. We have also compiled a list of referrals who offer surgery at a fixed price or under £6k, which is also an option for those on limited funds and for those looking at a cheaper referral hospital.

We have been fortunate to receive payments from VAT Returns, Gift Aid and Easy Fundraising which has helped our finances hugely.

We are grateful that we continue to receive donations from our supporters, either by: standing orders, one off donations, their own fundraiser, but also to those that send us parcels of gifts so that we can use these for auction and raffles to raise funds.

D2D Mission – We continue to roll out our information poster where we can. Some owners who have contacted us, their vet has suggested getting in contact with us for equipment, so word must be slowly getting out.

Innopet Stroller Trial – We were contacted by Innopet to ask if Dedicated to Dachshunds would like to take part in a trial to test their new stroller “Nomad” to gage if it was suitable for an IVDD dog. One of our owners kindly tested and gave constructive feedback which concluded that this was a good stroller for an IVDD dachshund.

Newsletters – We have had newsletters during this financial year with an overview on what Dedicated to Dachshunds has been doing over the past year. Due to the business of the charity, we will continue with newsletters into next year.

Website – Our website needed a major overhaul, with amendments, up-to-date information and additional content needed. This has been completed and is live.

Donate Button on D2D Facebook Page – We successfully got approval by Facebook and PayPal to add a donate button to our Facebook page. This is another way for owners to donate to us more easily.

Office Procedures – We continue to improve our way of working as a charity by adapting new processes as the need arises. This year we focussed on our GDPR and our privacy policy, making sure that we compliant as a charity with our processes in our day to day working.

Dedicated to Dachshunds Merchandise – This year, we launched our new Facebook online shop with a new branded logo for our merchandise. Our range included: hoodies, zoodies, t-shirts, bobble hats, bags, umbrellas, keyfobs, pet blankets, as well as a children’s range. We opened to bespoke orders for t- shirts, hoodies and zoodies, and had great feedback on all orders for design and quality of purchases. One of the popular designs was one of our previous designs of “We’ve got your Back”.

Equipment – We have now rolled out our new equipment request form to include the purchase only of the recovery pens. We made this decision due to the rise in postage costs of returning the pens back to us compared to the cost of purchasing a new one. We will still loan a recovery pen to those who contact us who are not in a position financially to purchase one, we offer a lifetime loan and will waiver the cost on a case-by-case basis.

Due to the number of years that we have been supporting and supplying owners with strollers, the charity is receiving more returned once the owners are no longer needing it. We generally have a good supply of stock so that we don’t need to purchase as many new ones each month to keep up with supply and demand. The pre-loved strollers that are returned are checked, maintained and cleaned before reissuing to the new owner. All pre-loved strollers going back out have our new ownership label on them, this is to prevent them from being sold on, just in case owners forget who they belong to.

Wheelchairs are loaned on a lifetime basis.

Fundraising

Sausage Dog Walks - Our team of volunteers continue to organise Sausage Dog Walks through our 'Sausage Dog Walks South Wales' Facebook group. The walks are held across South & West Wales which includes: Aberavon, Abergavenny, Barry, Cardiff, Carmarthen, Monmouth, and Swansea Bay. These events are well attended by owners and dogs who very much enjoy the walk and socialisation. All walks are fundraisers for the charity.

Auction - Our auction continues to be very popular, we are thankful to new members who join our D2D Auction group daily to support D2D. We launch on the 1st of each month. Our “Buy it Now” items are a popular addition to the monthly auction, which again has boosted our monthly fundraising. Our brand #bemoreburt is popular with the audience. We have launched a few special auctions at Christmas, Easter, Summer, Bags of Happiness and more recently Blankets of Happiness. This year, we ran a few fun free competitions to interact with the members, with “Name Mr Whiskerson’s House” and a “Photo” Competition. Our auction members have also enjoyed listing their own items and seeing the bids come in on their listings.

Additional Fundraisers - As well as the above, many owners have been organising their own fundraisers on behalf of Dedicated to Dachshund which have been truly amazing. Without their support, we wouldn’t be able to help so many families.
