Project Hope Leeds Annual Report 2023 – 2024
Our WHY
Project Hope Leeds exists to bring hope and positive change to families, individuals and communities in some of the most disadvantaged and beautifully diverse areas of Leeds. We create encouraging environments that help local people of various nationalities, cultures, beliefs and languages to meet, to get to know each other’s stories and to breakdown some prejudices and boundaries that exist between different groups. We bring people together so that they can learn together, form meaningful supportive relationships and help each other flourish in life. We enable people we support to grow in confidence, in parenting skills, in emotional resilience and in various other life skills that help them to create a better future for themselves, their families and their communities! We inspire people to make positive lifestyle choices and help them break the poverty cycle.
Our WORK
This year we supported 1093 individuals through the following programme of activities:
Parenting Courses
We ran three 7-week What Can a Parent Do? courses for parents of children aged 5-15, attended by 22 local parents from a wide range of ethnic and cultural backgrounds. 92% of parents improved their scores on the parenting questionnaires with regards to their ability to cope with their children’s misbehaviour. 57% of parents reported a decrease of unwanted behaviours after attending the 7-week course. Parents also reported improved emotional wellbeing, increased confidence in both themselves and their children, and greater readiness to attend other local courses and groups.
We also provided one 7-week Pram to Primary parenting course, for parents of children aged 0-6 years. 8 parents attended regularly and due to the young age of children, we provided a creche facility (attended by 8 children) to break down any barriers for parents attendance. 100% of the parents improved their ability to cope with misbehaviour scores. All of the parents attending the course identified at least one new parenting strategy that they have successfully implemented into their everyday home life. The creche offered volunteering opportunities for 4 local individuals, which led to full time employment for 2 of them.
Quotes from parenting course parents
“I have learned that when children make a mistake, to try and to ignore that mistake and always keep comments to the positive things”

“I have learned to spend more time with my boy and to give him a chance to express himself through play. We play a lot together now and he likes me to sit close to him, not just to sit on the sofa, but to get involved”
“I have learned more confidence and I liked being on the course”
“I have learned new ideas and ways to communicate, giving choices and importance of giving children options”

PEEP Group
We provided three groups of the PEEP Group (Parents as Early Education Partners) running for ten weeks each. These groups, working with mums, dads, carers, babies and toddlers, helped to build stronger parent-child relationships and increase parental knowledge and confidence in how to support their child's early learning and communication through play and everyday activities that they can do easily and cheaply at home. The group also helped to increase children’s readiness for school by enabling them to socialise with other children and involving them in structured activities such as song time and story time. We provided all the parents with information and resources they could use with their children at home, including various arts / crafts projects, book packs, bath alphabet and numbers and information on local libraries and activities available for young children in the local area and further ideas on things they could do at home to stretch their children’s early language, maths and communication development.
The groups were attended by 23 parents and 28 children from a wide range of backgrounds. All of the parents reported increased confidence and that they practised the activities at home, with most reporting that their children used more words, extended their maths vocabulary and greatly increased their social skills and readiness for school.
Quotes from the PEEP Group Parents
“I have learned how to practice maths, reading books and exploring taste of different foods with my child.”
“I have learned about maths at home with my daughter and routines.”
“I have learned how to teach my baby to be more confident”
“I have learned that reading is learning and about good foods and children’s emotions. I liked interacting with other mums”

The Play Group
44 adults and 63 children benefitted from our weekly playgroup, including parents and local childminders with babies and toddlers. The sessions included messy / free play, arts and crafts, a babies’ corner, puzzles, story time and sing-a-longs and refreshments for both parents and children.
The group helped children to grow in confidence and provided opportunities for children to socialise with other children in preparation for nursery / school. Parents also reported increased emotional wellbeing and mental health, as well as forming new meaningful friendships within the group that were a source of local support outside of the group.
Because we saw parents regularly, we were able to spot any difficulties and problems early and address them promptly to prevent things from escalating. This included one-to one support with issues such as mental health, filling in forms, referrals to local children centre, sleep training and weaning advice, information on other local support/activities and information on getting back to work provided by DWP’s Supporting Families into Employment Advisor. We also provided 42 food vouchers for families who struggled with food poverty.
Quotes from Stay & Play Group parents:
“It’s been lovely to watch all the kids grow as well as watching my own and I couldn’t have done the last 7 years without you always supporting me, thank you!”
“I started my teaching assistant course! Thank you so much for your support”
Surplus Food Collections
Each week our staff and volunteers pick up 8-12 trays of surplus foods from Sainsbury’s through their Neighbourly surplus food collection scheme. This very much needed food is then distributed to our Playgroup parents, to a local school that provides a food pantry for families affected by food poverty and to other local projects.
Community Events
This year we ran three large community events enjoyed by 304 unique children and 160 unique adults (some attended more than one event). The community events included two Summer Community Fun Days on the 28[th] July and 31[st] August and a Halloween Party on the 31[st ] October.
All of the community events were well attended, advertised through local schools and supported by 23 local and corporate volunteers. The events included a bouncy castle, entertainment from a DJ, arts and crafts and other fun games, activities and competitions. Each adult received free refreshments and each child a snack bag including a sandwich, fruit, juice, chocolate and crisps.

The events provided an opportunity for some family fun during school holidays for families who might not be able to afford to go away on holiday. They also brought a richness of backgrounds and cultures together to help foster community cohesion and unity.
The Halloween Party was supported by Leeds City Council’s Diversionary Activity Fund – with the aim to provide half term activities for local families in the light of firework displays being cancelled and to prevent antisocial behaviour in the local neighbourhoods.

Burmantofts & Richmond Hill Community Anchor Network (BRHCAN)
We continue our involvement in the development of the BRHCAN and attend weekly Patch 2 meetings (Burmantofts, Ebor Gardens, Lincoln Green Areas), where the local needs and possible solutions to the local needs are discussed. We also receive regular newsletters with up-to-date information on what is available locally so that we can ensure that the people we support are aware of all the local support and activities. BRHCAN also distributes supermarket vouchers, to help relieve the pressure of rising living costs for the local residents.
Christmas Hampers Appeal
This year, with the help of local businesses, we delivered 600 special Christmas Hampers during our annual Christmas Hamper Appeal. Local schools, children centres and other support agencies referred local people who were struggling this Christmas. An army of 207 local and corporate volunteers from 15 local businesses helped us pack, wrap and deliver the hampers.
We are grateful to: B&M store for making hamper’s shopping super easy this year; Sainsbury’s Colton for their super generous donation to the hampers appeal; Galaxy Insultation for allowing Santa to drive and pack and unpack their lorry; IKEA for continuing to supply us with their boxes; the Circuit for allowing us to use their delivery app for free; Milestone for organising a fork lift trolley and disposal of the pallets; Leeds City Council – Cleaner Neighbourhoods Team for collecting all the packaging refuse; SKY for their engineers with vans being super deliverers and to Irwin Mitchell Solicitors, Liberty Global, TRU (East Alliance), ITV, SSE Thermal, High Speen Training, Ison Harrison Solicitors and Turner & Townsend for continually supporting us with fundraising and sending us all their wonderful volunteers.
