**Project Hope Leeds Annual Report 2022 – 2023**

## **Our WHY**

Project Hope Leeds exists to bring hope to families, individuals and communities in some of the most disadvantaged neighbourhoods in Leeds. We create an encouraging environment that brings together people of various nationalities, cultures, beliefs and languages, to help them breakdown boundaries between different groups and together to flourish in life. We enable people to grow in confidence, in parenting skills, in emotional resilience and in various other life skills, that help them create a better future! We inspire people to make positive lifestyle choices and help them break the poverty cycle.

## **Our WORK**

This year marked an important pivot point for Project Hope Leeds. We strengthened our governance structure by registering Project Hope Leeds as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) – new registration number 1199028. Our mission, work, name and trustees remain the same, but the new governance structure is going to support and serve our project’s future. This report pertains to the work the charity accomplished from the date of registration as a CIO on 20[th] May 2022.

This year, it was important that we created opportunities for people we support to rebuild community, form meaningful friendships and strengthen local support structures. We supported 841 individuals involved in the following program of activities.

## _**Parenting Courses**_

We ran two groups of _**What Can a Parent Do?**_ course for parents of children aged 5-15 years old, attended by 22 local parents, representing wide range of ethnic backgrounds. Parents not only improved their parenting questionnaires scores, that measure improvements in family’s ability to manage and cope with some of the unwanted behaviour, but they have reported increased confidence, readiness to attend other local courses and groups and improved emotional wellbeing.

We have also provided 12 parents with skills and confidence to talk to their children about growing up, sex and relationships, through our _**Speakeasy**_ course.

## _**Quotes from parenting course parents**_

_“I am really confident in talking about sex now. I will be able to talk to my boy when he is a bit older about all the changes that are happening in his body.”_ Merhawit

_“I am teaching my daughter the proper names for private areas and also how to be safe when she is playing in the park or playground. “_ Tsigab

_“I feel confident that what I have learned on the What can a Parent do? Course will help my family. The staff and volunteers are nice and welcoming, they are more than expected. God bless them!”_ Rahwa

_“I enjoyed everything on the course, but choice and consequence and problem-solving has really helped me with my son.”_ Mandy

**Project Hope Leeds Annual Report 2022 – 2023**

We also continued our work with the _**PEEP (Parents as Early Education Partners) Groups.**_ We provided 2 groups running for 10 weeks each, working with mums, dads, carers, babies and toddlers, that helped to contribute to strong parent-child relationships, increased parental knowledge and confidence in how to support their child's learning and play through day-to-day life activities at home.

The group was attended by 53 participants (26 parents and 27 children) from a wide range of backgrounds. Some parents were new to the UK, where language and a lack of confidence in navigating life in the UK can be a barrier for children to have a good start in their primary school. We worked on early language and communication, early learning, including maths, reading and fine motor skills development, as well as emotional development and the importance of learning through play and everyday activities at home.

All of the parents reported that they practised the activities at home, with most reporting that their children used more words, extended their maths vocabulary and greatly increased their social skills and readiness for school.

## _**Quotes from the PEEP Group Parents**_

_“I have learned a lot of different experiences that I can do at home”_ Nardos

_“Autum is displaying more interest in playing with other children / becoming more sociable. Also now walking I have just seen a huge boost in her overall confidence.”_ Kirsty

_My little boy enjoyed the PEEP group, he enjoyed playing and singing and all the toys and being with other kids.”_ Lula

_“I am now doing more at home with my son – playing with him, speaking with him more, creating crafts, painting.”_ Ruth

_“I am happy with how well Rouben is coming along and learning.”_ Hannah

## _**Stay & Play Group**_

The group continued to grow and develop with 121 beneficiaries attending regularly (47 adults and 74 children), including parents and local childminders with babies and toddlers. The sessions included messy / free play, arts and crafts, babies’ corner, puzzles, story time and sing-a-longs and refreshments for both parents and children. We ensure that children and parents also benefitted from specific activities with the aim of improving parents’ confidence in providing early language and maths development through everyday play. This is a high-need area, with children attainment at primary school level being the lowest out of all Leeds wards, so activities that help school readiness are a high priority for the group.

The group also helped children to grow in confidence and supplied a much-needed opportunity for children to socialise with other children in preparation for nursery / school. Parents also reported increased emotional wellbeing and mental health, as well as forming new meaningful friendships within the group, that were a source of local support outside of the group.

## _**Community Fun Days**_

On the 5[th] August 2022 we ran a **Summer Community Fun Day** for local families. Advertised through local schools, the event brought together 177 people to the Vinery Centre. With the support from local companies and 16 volunteers, the event included a bouncy castle and outdoor active games, entertainment from a DJ, arts and crafts provided by Richmond Hill / Harehills Children Centre, who also provided book packs for all the children under the age of 4. We provided each child with a lunch snack bag and tasty refreshments for all to adults to enjoy too.

Our **Halloween Party** was enjoyed by 123 local families with toddlers, young children and teenagers, all dressed up in their best Halloween outfits. The event included a free food pack for every child, refreshments for parents and fun games and competitions organised by the children DJ entertainer. It helped prevent children being out trick-or-treating in the evening and antisocial behaviour by teenagers.

We also ran a **Christmas Community Event** in partnership with St Hilda’s Church and Community Unity, with festive fun and refreshments for parents and children, as well as a visit from Santa who gave presents to all the children. This event was attended by 110 local people.

## _**Burmantofts & Richmond Hill Community Anchor Network (BRHCAN)**_

We continue to be involved in the development of the BRHCAN and get involved in weekly Patch 2 meetings (Burmantofts, Ebor Gardens, Lincoln Green Areas), where the needs and possible solutions to the needs are discussed and we share information on what support is available locally. Each week new local groups join the network and we are involved in planning and delivering joint activities and events. The BRHCAN also established a virtual information system, that gives the key local residents, stakeholders and all the local organisations access to up-to-date information on what is available locally. BRHCAN also distributes supermarket vouchers, to help relief the pressure of the cost of living crisis for the local residents.

## _**Christmas Hampers Appeal**_

This year with the help of local businesses we delivered 545 special Christmas Hampers during our annual Christmas Hamper Appeal. This year we were able to raise a double amount of money to provide each household receiving the hamper with £25 supermarket vouchers, to further relief the financial pressure on families due to the cost of living crisis. We were supported by 65 dedicated volunteers from the local area and from 15 local businesses. St Agnes Church kindly provided their facility for us to pack and deliver hampers from and B&M stores provided all the food at a discounted price. IKEA provided free boxes, and SKY TV supported us with 5 engineers with vans to help deliver the hampers.
