Treasurer's Report

OUR STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES

Reduce loneliness and improve the social wellbeing of people over 65.

Key themes

Some key themes are emerging. We have been hearing that we must have a strong focus on supporting people’s health, financial security, and wellbeing. We will be looking at ways that we can invest in offering more benefits support; step up our campaigning to tackle pensioner poverty; and seek to reach the older people who are currently not claiming benefits that they are entitled to. We want to look at new ways to reduce loneliness by connecting with people in their 60s so they can join us and be part of our ambition to increase the number of befriending volunteers ready to offer a friendly ear to lonely or isolated older people. And we will be looking at ways to tackle inequality by offering support to older people in some of the most deprived areas of the borough.

The Cost of Living Crisis.

The rise of the cost of living means more people are in need of help, and charities are finding themselves overwhelmed with enquiries. In addition, donations are continuing to drop below pre-pandemic levels. The spiralling inflation has been on everyone’s mind in recent months.

Funding.

Despite the cost of living crisis for the year 2024/25, the trustees are of the opinion that grant funding will increases as steps are being taken to increase the fundraising activities.

VOLUNTEERS

We thank our volunteers who have made it possible for the charity to deliver its services and supporting the members in enabling them to live independent lives as far as possible.

2 Report of Trustees

Introduction

The trustees, also called as Management Committee (MC), present their report and financial statements of the Association for the year ended 30th June 2024, set out on page 13 to18. The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the accounting policies set out on pages14 and comply with the Association’s governing document and charity applicable laws.

Lambeth Asian Centre (LAC)

Lambeth Asian Centre (LAC) offers day centre activities for older Asian people in Streatham offering help, support and activities to promote their independence, health and well-being. It reaches out for the lonely and vulnerable people who live in this area.

Lambeth Asian Centre was started on 25th of September 1998; initially the centre didn’t receive any funding. The late Chair, Raj Acharya and the previous management committee decided to contribute £10.00 pounds each every week. With this contribution, the centre was able to run.

In the year 2002 Streatham Darby and Joan Club generously welcomed LAC to their building. During 2004 Lambeth Asian Centre bid for the Council funding and then LAC and Streatham Darby and Joan Club decided to work in Partnership and later Make a Difference Black Afro Caribbean group joined.

The main aim of the Association is to improve the overall welfare of Asian people of the London Borough of Lambeth and its neighbourhood.

3 Structures, Governance and Management

Legal Status

Lambeth Asian Centre (LAC) is a not for profit organisation, but a charitable organisation constituted under a constitution dated 25th September 1998 and but not registered as a charity with the charity commission.

The objectives of the Association are to promote the welfare of the Asian people of the London Borough of Lambeth.

Lambeth Asians Centre (LAC) is a voluntary organisation working for the welfare of Asian people living in the London Borough of Lambeth.

Established in 1998 LAC has demonstrated that it has a vital role to play in looking after the interests, needs and rights of Asian community living in Lambeth.

Governance

The trustee’s and Executive Committee who have served during the year are set out on page 3. The trustees, who shall be at least four in number, are appointed by the members at the General Meeting for a period of one year after which they may put themselves forward for re-appointment. Trustees may be removed from office by a resolution passed at a general meeting.

Management

The policy and general management of the affairs of the charity are directed by the Executive Committee (trustees) on behalf of the members and meets at least not less than six times a year. In addition, the committee is empowered to co-opt up to three further persons. Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson, Secretary, Treasurer and The members of the Executive Committee elected, may be removed by the members at the general meeting.

Day to day running of the Lambeth Asian Centre is delegated to the trustees and Voluntary members who all attend Executive Committee meetings.

Membership

Membership is open irrespective of sex, sexual orientation, political opinion. Nationality, religion or race to Individuals aged fifty years or over, who live within the area of benefit.

Individuals who are aged 50years or over, who live outside the area of benefit, shall be known as Associate Members and shall not have the right to vote at General Meetings of the Centre.

Recruitment and appointment of trustees

In accordance with the governing document, elections for the trustee’s takes place every year at the annual general meeting, if eligible, members may offer themselves for re-election. Appointment is on the basis of nominations received from members concerning eligibility, personal competence, specialist skills and local availability

Induction and training of trustees

When there is need for training, trustees are inducted through training days and through informal and formal meetings with established or outgoing trustees and are provided with an induction pack and other relevant materials to familialize themselves with the charity’s operations.

4 Activities of the Lambeth Asian Centre (Opening Hours to over 50’s, Wednesday 1.00pm to 4.30 pm weekly)

5 Activities and Achievements for public benefit during the year

LAC has continued to work informally with a range of local partner organizations to deliver a range of strategies to achieve charitable objectives: Delivery of a range of social opportunities is aimed at reducing social isolation and supporting the development of social networks. This includes virtual support and social groups. Delivery of specialist support groups [including for those affected by dementia] Delivery of services is aimed at the most isolated members, which further develop and Influences older people’s service providers, commissioners, businesses, and the community about the needs of older people

These addressed issues of depression which is well recognized that it brings mental health problem that affects many of these older adults Asians and that it has a negative impact on their morbidity, mortality, and quality of life.

The cost-of-living crisis.

The charity tried several methods to manage the cost-of-living concerns such as using financial reserves sourcing new donors making premises more energy efficient increasing charges for services and recruiting additional volunteers It is also experiencing a decrease in financial support and a decrease in donations. Consequently, the charity is spending more time on grant applications to source additional funding; and collaboration in an attempt to share costs and keeping it afloat. Downsizing, reducing office space and working from home are also methods being used for managing the situation

Achievements and performance:

Our impact

In 2023-2024 nearly 75 older people took part in our services, supported by nearly 4 volunteers.

Between July 2023 and June 2024, we have seen consistent reductions in feelings of loneliness amongst older people accessing our services. The number of older people who ‘often or always’ feel lonely is 47% lower than when they joined LAC and the number who ‘often’ feel they lack companionship has fallen by 32%.

“Hearing the laughter and sense of humour of our friends is a complete tonic for us. ”

Why LAC?

As we get older, our social circles diminish, and we find ourselves with fewer and fewer people to turn to. Imagine realising one day that all your friends and family have gone from your life. Loneliness can be cruel, and it affects millions of people over 75 who live in social isolation.

LAC is making life less lonely for many of older people every year. Older people tell

us that our volunteer-led activities make them happier and more able to trust others.

Exercise Classes One significant problem of old age is loss of independence. Reducing the risk of falls, exercising regularly and attaining a reasonable degree of physical fitness helps an older person meet the demands of their daily routine.

In response to a consultation with Service Users we identified a need for different types of activities and groups. To meet this need we have fundraised and got funding from Lambeth Council and London Community Foundation. With this funding we have been able to weekly activities and increase our classes to include Seated Yoga.

6. Going concern

The Cost of Living is not expected to have a significant impact on the entity. Management has determined that there is no material uncertainty that casts doubt on the entity’s ability to continue as a going concern. It expects that the rising Cost of Living might have some impact, though not significant, for example, in relation to expected future performance, or the effects on some future asset valuations.

7. Plans for future periods:

Our Future Plans Work has begun on a strategies; as always, our strategy and future service delivery will be guided by what older people tell us they want and need.

We want to continue to grow our community engagement including bringing services closer to older people’s homes. This will increase the geographical reach of the Charity which in turn will enable us to meet the needs of people who currently cannot travel to our current provision sites.

8 Financial Review and Reserve Policy

The results of the charity for the year are shown in the annual financial statements set out on pages 13 to 14. The net assets at 30th June 2024 were £8,198 (2023: £11,100). The Centre had income of £34,004; (2023: £301512) and direct charitable and support expenditure of £36,907; (2023: £31,657). There was a (deficit) of (2,902) (2023: (£1,145). Funds carried forward of: £8,198 represent; £3021 Unrestricted; Restricted £5,178.

It is the policy of the Centre to maintain designated and unrestricted funds, which are free reserves of the Centre at a level to provide sufficient funds to cover management and administration costs.

We are grateful to the following funders who supported us during hard time of pandemic to achieve the charities aims and objectives in delivering the support to the vulnerable older visually impaired people enabling them to live independently and with better health outcomes.

9 Investment Policy

There are no restrictions on the organisation’s power to invest. The investment strategy is set by the Management Committee and is reviewed regularly.

10 Risk Management Policy

Lambeth Asian Centre Trustees are aware of their obligations to make a statement in respect of the management of risks faced by the Centre. The trustees are carrying out a risk management audit review and developing a structured approach to risk management. This will promote a greater recognition of risk management at all levels within Lambeth Asian Centre. They believe that by monitoring reserve levels, ensuring controls exist over key financial systems and examining the operations and business risks faced by the charity, they will have established effective systems to mitigate those risks.

11 Appreciations:

All trustees acknowledge the tremendous efforts made by the elected officers and volunteers. They would like to record their appreciation of all those who give their time and energy so generously. Without the combined talents and efforts of so many members of Lambeth Asian Centre, the essential work that the Organisation exists for could not be delivered. It is hoped that the spirit of cooperation, dedication, commitment would continue in the years to come.

We are grateful to our funders (Lambeth Community Fund-The London Community Foundation) who have enabled us to provide services to our disadvantaged service users

Become part of our volunteering team

Our volunteers tell us how satisfying it is to “make a difference” as part of the team in a friendly and supportive organisation. It doesn’t matter if you have never volunteered before or what skills you have, anyone can volunteer with us. If you only have a couple of hours a week, or many hours to spare, we would very much like to hear from you.

TRUSTEE’S RESPONSIBILITIES IN RELATION TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS

Law applicable to charities in England and Wales requires the trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year, which give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charity for the period. In preparing those financial statements, the trustees are required to:

Accounting Policies

1(a) Basis of preparation

The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention and in accordance with applicable Accounting and Financial Reporting standards and the Charities SORP 2005 as amended by charities SORP 2011

(b) Fund-accounting:

Unrestricted funds – are funds, which as such are available for use or retention at the discretion of the management committee in accordance with the charity’s objects. Designated funds – are funds that have been set aside by the management committee for specific purposes

Restricted funds – are funds subject to specific restrictive conditions imposed by the donors or by declared purpose

(f) Depreciation: Depreciation is provided on all tangible fixed assets at rates calculated to write off cost on a straight line basis over their expected economic lives as follows: Furniture, fixtures & Fittings and other equipment20% on cost Computers - 20% on cost Motor Vehicles - 25% on cost Items of £500 or less are not capitalised.
