Annual Report
The Board of Trustees presents its report and Unaudited Financial Statements for the year to 31[st] December 2023. The trustees confirm that the Annual Report and Financial Statements comply with the current statutory requirements, the requirements of Gerry’s Pompeii’s governing document and the Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic and Ireland (FRS102).
The trustees review the aims, objectives and activities of the charity each year. The review helps the trustees ensure these remain focused on its stated purpose. We refer to the Charity Commission's guidance on public benefit when reviewing our aims and objectives and in planning future activities. This report reflects on our first achievements and the outcomes of our work in the period: 1[st] January – 31[st] December 2023.
What is Gerry’s Pompeii?
For over 30 years, Gerard ‘Gerry’ Dalton (1935-2019) worked privately, creating hundreds of artworks and transforming his unassuming ground floor flat, garden and the adjoining bank of the Grand Union canal into an extraordinary and singular visionary environment. This was the parallel world of an intensely private extrovert. Although Gerry was well known by his neighbours and was a loving presence on his street, the full extent of his work was only uncovered following his death in 2019.
Following a nationwide campaign to save it initiated by friends and neighbours, Gerry’s home was transferred back to Notting Hill Genesis Housing Association in 2020. What remains is the extensively decorated 50-metre wall and garden with hand-hewn topiary and the 50 sculptures that Gerry created along the canal bank on land originally leased by the Canal and River Trust to Gerry’s neighbours. This public artwork can be viewed from the towpath on the opposite side of the canal.
Gerry’s Pompeii CIO
Gerry’s Pompeii CIO developed out of the energy, support and excitement for Gerry’s work, which was galvanised by the public campaign. The campaign highlighted a need to save and champion heritage sites by artists that are often marginalised and revealed the need for a more centralised visual arts space to serve the communities in North Paddington where Gerry’s Pompeii is situated. Gerry’s Pompeii CIO is an ambitious organisation that builds on and seeks to share Gerry’s legacy. It inspires creativity by working closely with its local community and a diverse range of supporters.
As a charitable incorporated organisation, we protect and conserve Gerry’s work on the bank of the Grand Union Canal and are working towards creating greater public access to this inspiring site and important cultural resource. Our long-term vision is to create an alternative visual arts space for the area and we currently present a playful programme that involves a wide range of activities such as: workshops, boat tours, processions, alternative happenings and imaginative antics that are all delivered in Gerry’s spirit.
Development of local networks and partnerships
Throughout 2023, we strengthened our network by building meaningful connections with a diverse range of local residents, organisations, funders, and stakeholders. We held several productive meetings with Meanwhile Gardens (situated opposite Gerry’s Pompeii) and the nearby NHS surgery to explore potential collaborations within their social prescription program. Social prescription is a holistic approach that links individuals to local activities, groups, and services, addressing the social, emotional, and practical factors that impact their health and wellbeing. Our long-term vision is to offer tours, workshops, and additional services as part of this initiative.
In addition, we’ve hosted regular informal gatherings (complete with tea!) with neighbours from Hormead Road to gain deeper insights into their hyper-local needs and aspirations for an organisation like ours. These conversations have been invaluable in shaping our direction. We’ve
also engaged in a number of dynamic discussions with various local groups and potential partners about future collaborations. Community consultation and collaboration remain core to our mission and integral to the continued growth of our work.
Activities: 1[st] January – 31[st] December 2023
A Verry Gerry Christmas - December 2023
In December 2023, we hosted a festive gathering titled A Verry Gerry Christmas , where friends of Gerry's Pompeii—including supporters, partners, and local residents—were invited aboard the Electric Barge , dubbed for the night as The Gerry Ferry . The event aimed to re-engage our networks with our ongoing work and update them on our ambitious plans for the future. As we voyaged along the canal, guests heard about what we've been up to in 2023 and our long-term vision, particularly our plans to acquire a wide beam boat. Such a vessel would provide greater access to Gerry's Pompeii, offering us many new opportunities and greater flexibility, also alleviating pressure on our neighbours, Nick and Alison, who have so kindly offered access to Gerry’s Garden through their home since 2019.
Those on board enjoyed an absurdly wonderful time, setting off from Paddington Basin and concluding at Gerry’s Pompeii. Drinks were generously provided by David’s local winery, featuring his delicious selections that perfectly complemented the evening. Along the route, musicians, Gentle Stranger and friends made surprise appearances at different points—singing from a bridge and then again upon arrival at a magically lit Pompeii. We commissioned Gentle Stranger to respond to the site, and they performed a hauntingly beautiful new song inspired by one of Gerry's sculptures, Fish Boy .
Disembarking at Gerry’s, our passengers, mesmerised by the twinkling Gerry’s Pompeii, followed Gentle Stranger through Nick and Alison's house to join an excited parade down the street. Armed with mulled wine and adorned with as many sparkles as possible, the crowd processed down to No. 1, gathering people as they went. Some members of the parade wore the costumes they'd created in artist-led workshops a few weeks earlier at Paddington Arts , showcasing the brilliantly funny and creative spirit of our community. The parade culminated at our neighbour Roc's house, where a wild after-party took place. The festivities were generously sponsored by X Muse Vodka, who provided tasty, Gerry’s-inspired cocktails such as the "Pompeii Porn Star" and "Shamrock Green." The party crowd was entertained by a fantastic performance from the legendary local steel band, The Metronomes , with the celebration continuing into the early hours.
The event was a resounding success, not only rekindling relationships with our existing supporters but also engaging new members of the community. It provided an invaluable platform to share our vision and gather feedback, reinforcing the importance of community involvement in our projects. The enthusiasm and support we received energised our team and supporters, building strong commitment to realising our plans for the future. Acquiring a wide beam boat will be a significant milestone—enhancing accessibility, enabling us to expand our programmes, and honouring the generosity of our neighbours who have supported us thus far. A Verry Gerry Christmas set a brilliantly joyful tone for the exciting developments ahead, and we are grateful to everyone who contributed to making it an unforgettable experience.
Decorate Your Door
To coincide with A Verry Gerry Christmas , Hormead Road resident and friend of Gerry’s, Ann initiated a ‘Decorate Your Door’ competition in which participating locals influenced by Gerry’s Pompeii decorated their doors. The ‘Decorate Your Door’ contest prizes were awarded by artist Louise Ashcroft, crowning winners with 'Quality Street’ crowns and tiara's made by neighbour Zelda.
Artist led workshops at Paddington Arts: 25[th] November 2023
Artists: Emma Cousin | Louise Ashcroft | Dominic Watson | Niklas Gustafson
In November 2023, we hosted a full day of dynamic, artist-led making sessions at our neighbouring charity, Paddington Arts. The workshops were designed to engage local participants in creating wearable art pieces for our festive event, A Verry Gerry Christmas , which took place in December. The aim of these workshops was to inspire local creativity while fostering a deeper connection with Gerry's Pompeii, and to engage the community in a meaningful way. To achieve this, we commissioned four talented artists to lead the sessions, each introducing imaginative ways of engaging with Gerry’s work and legacy.
Over 40 participants attended these free sessions, representing a broad spectrum of the North Paddington community. Feedback from both participants and artists was overwhelmingly positive, underscoring the demand for more artistic and cultural activities in the area. This feedback aligns with our long-term objectives to provide accessible creative opportunities and strengthen community cohesion through our activities.
The workshops were designed to reflect on different aspects of Gerry Dalton’s work. Artists Louise Ashcroft and Emma Cousin explored Gerry’s fascination with historical figures, inviting participants to create masks and costumes inspired by the people from history they deemed important. This approach fostered an interactive dialogue around identity and legacy, encouraging participants to have fun and express their own sense of cultural history.
Dominic Watson collaborated with his group to co-produce a giant figurehead to adorn The Gerry Ferry, echoing Gerry’s drive to memorialise significant figures. Participants worked collectively, sculpting models of their personal heroes, which were assembled into a large and fantastic clay head. The process of working together in a shared medium allowed people to build new relationships and mirrored the way Gerry brought diverse stories together.
Niklas Gustafson led his group on an exploratory walk around the neighbourhood, gathering found objects to create Gerry-style brooches. The workshop drew on Gerry's approach to working with materials that were low-cost and ready to hand, encouraging participants to find beauty in the everyday and connect their art to the local environment.
Participants of the workshops ranged in age from 2 to 75, showcasing the inclusivity and accessibility of the workshops. The diversity of attendees and their remarkable creations made it
feel as though we had created a beautiful Gerry’s inspired impromptu art school in a day! The appetite for the workshops far exceeded our expectations, not only proving that there is a strong desire for these activities, but also highlighting the power of art-making in fostering meaningful cross-generational community connections.
Central Scottish Documentary Festival - Macrobert Arts Centre: 2[nd] – 6[th] November 2023
In November 2023, Stella Scott’s documentary film, Gerry’s Pompeii , had its world premiere at the Central Scottish Documentary Festiva l, an event dedicated to celebrating innovative documentary and non-fiction filmmaking. Curated and presented by the Macrobert Arts Centre in Stirling, the festival spanned five days and featured 32 film screenings. The inclusion of Gerry’s Pompeii in this prestigious lineup provided us with a unique opportunity to introduce Gerry’s remarkable story and our charitable work to a completely new audience. This premiere not only expanded our reach within the UK but also significantly raised awareness of Gerry’s Pompeii and our ongoing mission as a charity, further solidifying the importance of preserving and sharing Gerry Dalton’s legacy through film.
Gerry’s Pompeii site tours: June – July 2023
The summer months are arguably the best time to see Gerry’s Pompeii, sparkling in all it’s wonder and beauty. In June and July 2023, our Director, Sasha Galitzine, led a series of guided tours of the site, welcoming potential new partners, supporters, and local residents. These tours offered an introduction to Gerry’s work, the mission of our charity, and our long-term vision for the future of the project. Community is at the core of Gerry’s Pompeii and we recognise that
projects delivered collaboratively allow organisations to support one another, pool their resources and build on their strengths. We are therefore always responsive to engaging with possible new local partners. Each guided visit to Gerry’s Pompeii provided a unique opportunity to inspire and engage visitors, developing new connections and reinforcing our commitment to preserving and sharing Gerry’s extraordinary artistic legacy.
Gerry’s On Film
NOWNESS - July 2023
In July 2023, the film Pompeii , directed by Jacek Zmarz and Louis Harris White , originally created in 2019-20, was re-edited for a special presentation on NOWNESS . As a platform that curates and supports unique films, NOWNESS provides an opportunity for filmmakers to showcase their work to a global audience of over 20 million people each month. This re-release of Pompeii amplified the visibility of Gerry’s Pompeii and boosted our charity’s profile on an international scale.
KILN THEATRE - January 2023
Screening of 2 documentary films and panel discussion with Danielle Thom, Richard Wentworth, Alison Sage, Sasha Galitzine, Stella Scott, Elaine Arthur and Jacek Zmarz
FILMS:
Gerry’s Pompeii , directed, co-produced and co-edited by Stella Scott. Co-produced by Sasha Galitzine
Pompeii , directed by Jacek Zmarz and Louis Harris White
During 2019-2020, two films were created by independent filmmakers, each making a documentary work that drew inspiration from the work of Gerry Dalton . Filmmakers Jacek Zmarz and Louis Harris-White produced a short film titled Pompeii , using fascinating footage of Gerry’s Pompeii and incorporating words from Gerry himself, transcribed by his neighbour Roc Sandford . This film, which recorded Gerry’s Pompeii in its entirety, has become a vital record.
Simultaneously, from 2019-2022, filmmaker Stella Scott documented the evolution of Gerry’s Pompeii and its surrounding community. Through interviews with Gerry’s neighbours, footage of the site, and a deep exploration of Gerry’s life and inspirations, Stella crafted a full-length documentary titled Gerry’s Pompeii , capturing both the beauty of the site and the local campaign to preserve it.
In January 2023, Gerry’s Pompeii formally launched the charity, hosting the debut screening of these films at The Kiln , a local theatre known for supporting films that tell marginalised stories. The event, which was fully booked with over 280 attendees , highlighted the deep cultural ties between the community and Gerry’s work, particularly resonating with the Irish heritage in the area. The screening was not only a celebration of Gerry’s enduring power to inspire artists but also a significant moment to showcase his story to the wider industry and the public.
The aim of this event was to bring the films to the attention of both industry professionals and campaign supporters and to share the incredible story of Gerry’s Pompeii . Importantly, it also served as a fundraising opportunity for our charity’s 2023 programming. The event was a big success, amplifying awareness of our work, attracting new supporters, and raising vital funds to continue our mission of preserving Gerry’s legacy and expanding our charitable activities in the year ahead.
Gerry’s Pompeii inspired design: Architectural Association Degree Show - January 2023
In 2022, as part of their "Bricoleurs on the Loose" module, 20 BA students from the Architectural Association were invited to visit Gerry’s Pompeii . The students received a project brief co-written by Sasha Galitzine , Director of Gerry’s Pompei and the heads of their course, positioning Gerry’s Pompeii as their ‘first client’. Tasked with designing ‘useful follies,’ the students divided into groups to explore topics such as weather, access, care, and health & safety—elements crucial to the site’s future.
Midway through the project, a critique session was held, attended by Sasha Galitzine, Nick Hall (Interim Chair), Alison Sage (Gerry’s neighbour), several architectural critics and practitioners, as well as the students’ tutors. They offered feedback on how the projects could be developed further.
The students showcased a variety of brilliantly creative ideas and architectural models, which were later presented as part of their end-of-year exhibition in January 2023 . The showcase attracted a large public audience over several days, providing significant exposure for both the students and Gerry’s Pompeii.
The collaboration had several key aims: foremost, it offered students an opportunity to engage with Gerry’s Pompeii as a unique and important alternative heritage site. The project provided real-world experience, exposing students to the kind of non-traditional clients they may encounter in their future careers. For Gerry’s Pompeii, the partnership allowed us to establish connections with architectural experts and expand our network.
Additionally, this collaboration served as a pilot project, demonstrating the educational potential of Gerry’s Pompeii as a site for learning and engagement. Based on the success of this initiative, we plan to build on this model by actively seeking out further institutional partnerships in education, with the goal of positioning Gerry’s Pompeii as a valuable resource for future architectural and design projects.
3D mapping Gerry’s
To fully capturing and document Gerry’s wall and sculptures with the highest level of detail, we meticulously 3D mapped the entire site, ensuring that every aspect of Gerry’s work is preserved accurately, maintaining its integrity for future generations to appreciate and study.
Conservation
An initial site report was completed, assessing the scope of work required for the restoration of Gerry’s wall and sculptures. This report included an investigation into the scale of necessary repairs and the testing of adhesives to ensure compatibility and effectiveness. Phase 1 of the restoration will focus on these critical elements, setting the groundwork for the broader restoration efforts to follow.
Gardening and Maintenance
In 2023, Gerry’s Pompeii established a Gardening Advisory Board made up of four members, each bringing valuable expertise to help shape the future of the garden. The primary purpose of this board is to develop both the conceptual vision and practical maintenance strategies for the space, ensuring that Gerry’s garden continues to thrive while preserving its unique integrity. By focusing on both aesthetics and sustainability, the Gardening Advisory Board will play a key role in maintaining the site’s beauty and safeguarding its original spirit, helping us keep Gerry’s Pompeii true to its roots for years to come.
Operations & Funding sources
In 2023, Gerry’s Pompeii successfully raised funds through a variety of private donations from individual donors, trusts and foundations including generous contributions from Tamsin Wimhurst , as well as other individual and anonymous donors.
We maintain robust administrative and accounting procedures to manage our operations effectively, including billing, filing, and payments. The Director oversees these day-to-day activities to ensure smooth and efficient management. To enhance transparency and accountability, our annual accounts and financial records are reviewed by an external examiner each year, providing an additional layer of oversight and assurance.
Reserves Policy
Gerry’s Pompeii’s Reserves Policy is revised annually by the board of trustees. Reserves are held in order to protect the charity against unexpected drops in income or allow it to take advantage of new opportunities. Reserves can only be spent with the approval of the Board of Trustees.
