2. Structure, Governance and Management
Governing Document
Global Acts of Unity is a registered charity governed by its constitution. Its objectives are to promote unity, tolerance and understanding in schools, this is done through advancing education and raising awareness of equality and diversity; fostering understanding between people from diverse backgrounds; and cultivating a sentiment in favour of equality and diversity.
Trustee Recruitment and Training
Trustees are recruited on the basis of the skills and experience required to govern the charity effectively. New trustees receive an induction to familiarise themselves with the charity’s aims, activities and responsibilities.
Related Parties
During the year, Global Acts of Unity CIC (SC632763) - a Community Interest Company of which Mike Haines, the charity's founder and chair, was also the sole director, was wound up and dissolved. On dissolution, the CIC's remaining funds of £10,839 were transferred to the charity as the CIC's designated asset-lock beneficiary. This transfer has been recorded as a receipt in the accounts.
Because Mike Haines held a leadership role in both organisations, this transfer is disclosed as a related party transaction in the interests of transparency. The trustees are satisfied that the transfer was made at arm's length, represented legitimate dissolution proceeds, and was in the best interests of the charity. As the CIC has now been dissolved, there is no ongoing related party relationship of this nature.
Safeguarding
The charity provides services to children and young people. Standard DBS checks have been obtained for all eligible roles. Robust safeguarding policies and procedures are in place and subject to regular review.
3. Objectives and Activities
Our Mission
Global Acts of Unity was founded by Mike Haines following the murder of his brother David by ISIS in 2014. The charity exists to show that the answer to extremism is unity — bringing together communities, schools and people of all backgrounds to stand against division and hate.
What We Do
The charity delivers its mission through:
-
School workshops and assemblies for Key Stage 3 and 4 pupils, using David’s story to open conversations about identity, multiculturalism and British values
-
A free lesson plan and classroom presentation for PSHE covering terrorism, discrimination, diversity and unity
-
Community engagement events and activities that bring people of different backgrounds together
-
Partnership working with schools, local authorities, community organisations and government bodies
