Trustees Annual Report 2025

The Library of Things Malton & Norton is a ‘library’ of the kind of useful things that people only need occasionally. In our first year, we have saved members over £3100. Members can borrow items such as DIY and gardening tools, carpet cleaner, pressure washer, projector, child car booster seats, and many other things. Many items have been donated and refurbished by volunteers. We will be looking for more people as we expand to help with the management, repair and maintenance of items, or with helping to handle loans and returns.

This year we passed a new milestone with 62 item loans throughout the year. Once again the Carpet Cleaner proved to be the most popular item. It was closely followed by a new item, the Apple press and shredder. Our longest loan was for the sewing machine. The garden scarifier was also popular though it did not always meet expectations and required a number of repairs. We are grateful for our small but dedicate team of volunteers that keep things running as smoothly as they do.

By sharing tools and equipment through the Library of Things our towns will also reduce landfill, clutter in the home and reduce our carbon footprint.

We have promoted our activities through on-line platforms e.g. Facebook and Instagram and at numerous events throughout the year including - Involve, a Rotary Club event, Malton Food Market, The Norton Trinity Green Weekend and Kirkbymoorside Eco Fair. We also work with several environmental groups, such as Malton & Norton Environmental Group & Ryedale Environmental Group.

A new item this year was a festival trolley. This had been a requested item and we are grateful to Malton Town Council who were able to match fund this item that we hope will be a popular item in 2026. We have also inherited a thermal image camera that people can use to monitor the heat loss from their homes. It is not a new machine and may require some knowledgable help for it be used but we are hopeful that it will tie in with the environmental aims of our charity.

We are a group of 3 Trustees & 4 other keen, knowledgeable volunteers.

We have continued with our “click and collect” system whereby our members can book an item they want to borrow from our on-line catalogue and then pick it up on Thursday between 5 and 7 pm. At the end of 2025 moved to a new location inside the Omni bar, a warmer and safer place and we are grateful to Gemma at Omni for such a warm welcome. Our search continues for a more permanent place where we could both store and host pick-up and hopefully allow more opening times.
