Fur and Feathers Animal Sanctuary
Report of the Trustees
For the year ended 30 April 2024
Objectives and Activities
Our primary objective is to benefit of the public by relieving the suffering of feral, stray and unwanted cats who need care and attention. We seek to provide and maintain foster homes and other facilities for the care and veterinary treatment of cats.
Our core activities are:
-
Rehoming : the rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming of stray and unwanted cats and kittens;
-
Neutering :
-
the neutering and release of feral cats to humanely control environments;
-
encouraging and assisting, where possible, in the neutering of domestic cats; and
-
Education: improving understanding of cats and their needs and prevention of cruelty and suffering to cats and kittens.
The charity is managed by a committee of three voluntary trustees. The Trustees are mindful of the Charity Commission guidance that our activities should benefit the public.
The charity is run entirely by volunteers, who contribute with:
-
Day to day care and rehoming of cats and kittens;
-
Fundraising and publicity activity
The charity does not own any of its own land or property. Where land is required for storage of goods, this is rented by way of short-term lease agreement.
Achievements and Performance
Rehoming
Cats and kittens come into our care from a variety of sources, for example, strays, unwanted pets, abandoned pets, housing evictions, vet referrals and bereavement. Whilst we are unable to accommodate all requests, we help where we can. If we are unable to accept a cat, advice and alternative suggestion are always offered.
Before rehoming a cat or kitten, all animals undergo a health check by a qualified veterinary surgeon. All cats are wormed, defleaed, vaccinated, microchipped, neutered (if old enough) and rehomed with 5 weeks free health insurance provided by Agria.
All cats and kittens coming into our care are assessed as to their homing suitability (e.g. with children, inexperienced owners, dogs or other pets). We will only rehome a cat where we feel that they are a good match with their new environment and new owners.

All cats are rehomed as indoor only, to reduce the risk of traffic accidents. This also enables potential owners who live in apartments to consider adoption, which can be limited by other rescue facilities who mandate outdoor access.
Everybody who adopts a cat or kitten will have been given verbal advice and have participated in an in-person home check assessment with one of our volunteers. Rescue back up is provided to all our animals should their new owner’s circumstances change, or newly adopted cats fail to integration into their new family. In cases where cats fail to integrate, we offer to refund the money given to us as an adoption donation.
Neutering
At every opportunity we encourage volunteers and members of the public to neuter their cats. It is beneficial to the long-term health of the animal and helps limit the number of unwanted cats and kittens.
Unowned cats can become a nuisance in the community where they are roaming, fighting with neighbouring cats and having unwanted litters of kittens in inappropriate places. A number of these will be semi-feral or feral, having either had a home a long time ago or having never been socialised with humans.
In these cases, cats are trapped, spayed or castrated, treated for an parasites and injuries before being released back into their territory after recovery. If the original trap site is considered unsuitable for the safe release of the cat, we seek to relocate the cat to safe farm, smallholding and stable homes. Kittens young enough to be socialised are taken to one of our foster homes for care and eventually will be placed for adoption.
Education
All cats and kittens are rehomed with information leaflets and are actively encouraged to stay in touch and join our available online community forum.
Owners often contact us about behavioural and medical problems associated with their pets and, if appropriate, we do our best to signpost to advice and help.
Official organisations sometimes contact us and ask for help with faced situations, for example, involving tenants and their cats.
Financial Review
Our principal sources of income are:
-
Donations from adopters and the general public, either one off or by regular donation;
-
• Fundraising income, from organised charity events and sale of goods donated for sale through our online auctions;
-
Grants from other organisations or charitable trusts.
The trustees have agreed to a policy to maintain an unrestricted reserves position to hold a minimum of 3 months of expenditure (£21,500). At the end of the year, we held £115,460 of unrestricted reserves and £10,504 of restricted reserves. In 2024/25 we have now committed to do more by the way of trap neuter and release to assist the local community with growing feral colony issues, which will be funded from the reserves we hold.
There are no uncertainties about the charity continuing as a going concern.
