Charity name: MORECAMBE BAY PULMONARY FIBROSIS SUPPORT GROUP

Charity registration number:1198516

Objectives and Activities

The Objectives of the charity are;

The principal activities are aimed to relieve the needs of persons suffering from pulmonary fibrosis, primarily, but not exclusively, in the Morecambe Bay area by raising awareness of the lung disease pulmonary fibrosis and to support group activities

The principal services provided include the following activities

The trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit and are aware of the guidance and take it into account when making decisions.

Achievements and Performance

We still hold contact details for around 100 patients/carers. We have met monthly in Burton in Kendal with anywhere between 10 and 25 patients and carers attending depending on the weather and the health of the attendees. We meet every 2 months in Barrow in Furness with an average attendance of between 5-15. Speakers have included Age Uk (S Lakes), Citizens Advice Bureau (N Lancs), Morecambe Bay Wills and Estates, Lizzi Collinge MP, Respiratory consultant to talk about Research, Singing for Lung Health and a talk from a local man who has swum the English Channel.

The group members decided that they did not always want a speaker as the peer support and friendships made were as important to them. They benefit from having the opportunity to share stories and learn from each other about how they manage their condition. They also requested a wider variety of subjects away from their health condition. Wendy is planning a distance bike ride in order to raise awareness of PF as part of PF awareness month in September 2026.

Morecambe Bay Wills and Estates have nominated us as a local charity to receive donations from them through the financial year 26-27. They have nominated a member of staff to support the group and its members. Elevate Utd football team have also nominated us to

receive funds as a result of a family member who died after benefitting from the support group meetings.

We are exploring other ways to fund support for patients and carers away from the group meetings such as organising social events, and support services to help people who can’t access the group meetings or are struggling to come to terms with their diagnosis. The group members are regularly asked for their views on what would benefit them.

We also have a few carers who regularly help out at meeting with serving refreshments, baking, washing up etc.

Financial Review

The Charity ended the financial year with a cash balance of £3858, significantly up on prior years because of some larger donations and more regular contributions from a number or our meeting attendees. The principal sources of income were a range of small donations, a funeral collection and a donation from a small local business. The charity is now in its fourth year and costs are similar to previous years. Receipts are up significantly. Cash reserves held should cover the most likely operating costs for the next few financial year and hence the trustees consider the current reserves held to be sufficient and are looking to increase spend on items that will benefit our patients. The trustees have not received any remuneration and only the expenses of running the meetings have been charged to the accounts.

The charity has no investments beyond the bank account which is a free account reducing the costs to the charity.
