SIR JOSEPH BANKS SOCIETY CIO
ACCOUNTS
Trustees Report:
The Sir Joseph Banks Society CIO (charity registered in England no. 1198498: “the CIO”) was registered as a charity on 4 April 2022 with the intention that it should be the successor body to the Sir Joseph Banks Society (charity registered in England no. 1127728: “the Old Society”). The constitution of the CIO allows it to hold property and to operate similarly to incorporated bodies which the Old Society is unable to do. The CIO will take over the functions of the Old Society and its membership. The CIO did not begin to take on its responsibilities until 25 January 2023 when it was able to open a bank account. These accounts therefor cover the period 25 January 203 – 31 March 2023.

Museum development
The new museum based at the Sir Joseph Banks Centre in Horncastle has continued to develop with the aid of grants and a large volunteer input. The main focus of the displays provided by the CIO is the town’s connection with Sir Joseph who owned the nearby estate of Revesby and who had a town house in Horncastle. A timeline of his life highlights his voyages of exploration, plant collecting, links with Australia and New Zealand, and the foundation of Kew Gardens.
Other displays illustrate the work of the CIO in conserving natural history collections including the new Lincolnshire Herbarium which is housed in the building, insect specimens, fossils and objects associated with Sir Joseph and his travels. There is a Melanesian collection with artefacts illustrating the region’s cultural and historical riches.
The CIO safeguards some remarkable collections of Victorian botanical watercolour paintings, prominent among which are the large works of May Lane-Claypon (1872-1964) of Wyberton, reproductions of which are displayed in one of the galleries and are available for purchase, and the works of Dr J T Burgess (1879-1915) of Spilsby.

The CIO has also teamed up with the Horncastle History & Heritage CIO to develop some aspects of the museum, providing the town with new exhibition space to showcase some remarkable aspects of the town’s history. Archaeological artefacts illustrate the Roman and later periods. The background of the hangman William Marwood, who lived in the town, is also covered along with information about Victorian times.
3. Tribute Garden
The plant collection has been supplemented with several new species and replacements for plants that have not survived the harsh winter. Extensive repairs have been undertaken to the walls of the raised beds.
4. Communications
The CIO’s website has been improved with additional resources including more detailed information about the collections and library. There are plans to make more information available about the archives and the David Robinson papers.
- Library & Archive
Cataloguing and indexing of the contents has continued. Several new items have been added.
- Membership
Membership at the end of the financial period stood at 236.
7. Volunteering
Many volunteers take part in all aspects of the CIO’s work. The roles range from practical work on garden maintenance and herbaria management, to museum development, data logging, financial management and administration.
Going Concern
The financial statements have been prepared on a going concern basis, as the trustees believe that the CIO has sufficient reserves to continue its activities.
Financial Overview
Ordinary income and expenditure shows a deficit of £1410. However, during the reporting period none of the Old Society’s assets have been transferred to the CIO. For a fuller picture of our activities the accounts of the Old Society should be read in conjunction with these.
Structure, Governance and Management
The CIO was registered as a charity on 4 April 2022 and is governed by its constitution which may be viewed on the CIO’s website. Printed copies can also be supplied on request.
Method to Recruit Trustees
Potential trustees have been approached where it is believed they have the skills that can support the CIO’s charitable objectives. Trustees are sought when it is necessary to fill any skills gaps.
The Trustees report was approved by the Trustees on 4 September 2023 and signed on their behalf by:
