Section D Achievements and Performance

## **Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year**

This is the first Annual Report of the YOU WM Charity, which came about following discussions between leaders of the eleven Youth Organisations in 2021, and which was based on the format of ‘YOU London’. Although meetings were initially restricted by the covid pandemic, the Earl of Wessex launched YOU WM in September, followed by launch events in the Black Country, Coventry and Birmingham through to Spring 2022 in which the organisations were showcased and adult Leaders and members met civic, community and business leaders.

Donations from the Coventry & Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce, the Police & Crime Commissioner’s Building Blocks Charity, the Montal and Rowlands Trust Charities, Dudley MBC and the West Midlands Reserves Forces’ and Cadets’ Association (‘WMFRCA’) ensured funding for start-up and the first two years of operations and the appointment of a part-time co-ordinator. Fundraising continues.

An application to the Charity Commision (‘CC’) for registration of YOU WM as a Charity was submitted in August 2021 but due to effect of covid on CC operations, registration was delayed until 31 March 2022. These accounts nevertheless also cover the pre-registration period of activity.

A call for Trustees was circulated in autumn 2022 which subsequently led to the appointment of four additional Trustees in March 2023, all having a depth of hands-on experience with youth organisations.

The organisations agreed an action plan in July 2022 to include activities to support the main pillars of the Objectives, key elements of which are:

**Providing Information and Guidance.** The website has been launched, providing young people, parents and carers with details of each organisation and links to local units. The development of this facility is continuing (www.youwm.org.uk)

**Promoting Adult Volunteering.** A summary of key tools to attract adult volunteers has been developed and local meetings are ongoing to identify avenues for capacity building. A programme for promotional activity is being implemented, including for Volunteering Week.

**Collaboration between organisations.** A number of opportunities for two or more of the YOU WM organisations to help each other with resources, training and advice have been facilitated; collaborative momentum is building in various areas.

A major leadership event for young people from the eleven organisations is being planned for August 2023.

**Raising awareness and advocacy.** A programe of workshops in each of the seven local authority areas of the West Midlands has commenced, bringing together local YOU WM and Lieutenancy leaders with Councillors and officers involved in childrens’ services with the aim of strengthening local contact, advocacy and identifying areas for joint working and action. A schedule of local civic awards is being prepared to ensure that outstanding adult vounteers and young people are recognised. An initial Newsletter was issued.

The action plan will be reviewed and updated in mid-2023 to identify further opportunitie to fulfill the Charity’s objectives. A YOU WM Youth Forum is planned to be set up in 2023 to ensure that the views of young particpants are heard.
