Overview
A Message from the Chair of Trustees
Senior Pastor and Chair of Perry Beeches Baptist Church Trustees
Welcome to this year’s Annual Report of the Trustees and Unaudited Financial Statements for the financial year ended 31[st] March 2023. Let me start by sharing the very best wishes of everyone at Perry Beeches Baptist Church to those reading this report.
Financially, we have had a very encouraging year, being supported by donations. Thank you to everyone who has supported Perry Beeches Baptist Church financially over the past year. We have raised the funds we needed to deliver our projects. The generosity you have shown us at Perry Beeches Baptist Church, in the face of the economic and financial challenges we know so many of you have faced yourselves, is truly inspiring.
The Trustees are confident that we can plan with a two-year time horizon. The overarching ambition for our next strategy is to reach more of our community.
I feel truly privileged and I want to thank our incredible team of Trustees and volunteers at Perry Beeches Baptist Church. You have been simply inspirational, compassionate and committed to the work we are doing for our community.
We look back on this period as transitional, as unfortunately a large part of the year we had to limit the number of community events held, due to the building works for the construction of the Community Hub, which took place during summer 2022 and December 2022.
It was also a time of transition for myself as Pastor Owen Uriah, the previous Pastor, retired in December 2022 and I took over at that time. I also had to prepare for a new leadership team.
I am particularly proud of the new community hub at Perry Beeches Baptist Church, and highlights to me that God is able to put the right people in place to help and support this development.

About Perry Beeches Baptist Church
Objectives and Activities
In order to fulfil its purpose and mission statement, the Church provides a wide range of activities both to its membership and to the community.
The mission statement is:
- A Church serving the Lord, each other and the community in unity and harmony. Jesus at the centre of all we do, carrying out the Great Commission.
The activities may include, but are not restricted to:
-
regular public worship, prayer, Bible study, preaching and teaching;
-
baptism, as defined in the Baptist Union’s Declaration of Principle;
-
the Communion of the Lord’s Supper which shall normally be observed at least once a month;
-
evangelism and mission, locally, regionally, nationally and internationally;
-
the teaching, encouragement, welcome and inclusion of young people;
-
nurture and growth of Christian disciples;
-
education and training for Christian and community service;
-
giving and encouraging pastoral care;
-
encouraging relationships with and supporting Baptists and other Christians;
-
supporting and encouraging charitable social action (i.e. coming together to help improve the lives of others and solve the problems that are important) in the United Kingdom and abroad, especially, but not limited to, the local community, on an inclusive basis in terms of age, race, gender, sexual orientation, disability, financial hardship or any other measure. This social action is described more fully in, but not limited by, our Social Action Plan document, which is reviewed annually.
The aim is to show the love of Jesus Christ in both word and deed and to bring people into closer relationship with him.
Achievements and Performance
Church Attendance
Church attendance has been monitored and averaged over 5 periods of 3 months, as shown below:
-
March 2022 to May 2022
-
June 2022 to August 2022
-
September 2022 to November 2022
-
December 2022 to February 2023
-
March 2023 to May 2023
5
Average attendances for these periods are:
| Period | Zoom/YouTube | In Church |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 37 | 52 |
| 2 | 40 | 47 |
| 3 | 41 | 54 |
| 4 | 36 | 63 |
| 5 | 40 | 74 |
We therefore conclude that the online presence remains fairly constant on the day, but has the ability to increase historically. One of our broadcasts achieved a viewing figure of 1,300 views. The In Church figure shows a seasonal variation in the summer, but shows a pleasing upward trend. Whilst numbers alone are not important, they do show a trend to increase personal appearance in the building.
The following sections of this report aim to provide you with a snapshot of the key activities we have undertaken this year.
Bible Study
The Church holds weekly Bible study as a way to know God better.
Prayer Meetings
Weekly prayer meetings are held in the Church for people to get together for the purpose of prayer as a group.
Worship Team
The Worship Team hold rehearsals on a weekly basis to prepare for the Sunday morning service, baby dedications and other events.
Evangelism Course
An Evangelism course was held with a training programme to help members engage actively in evangelism; providing insights, activities and talking points to help individuals understand how to share their faith and become more confident and effective in connecting with people.
Baby Dedications
Four baby dedications were held during the reporting period.
Chaplaincy
The Senior Pastor provides chaplaincy to several organisations in the community:
-
Arena Academy in Birmingham is a secondary school where the chaplain helps students that are struggling with anxiety, home problems, etc.
-
James Watt College in Birmingham is a centre of excellence for technical training and education. The chaplain provides family support counselling and staff counselling.
-
The chaplain provides emotional, social and spiritual support to staff at Erdington and Kingstanding Fire Station.

Food Bank Service
The Church Food Bank is open weekly but also at other times when it is required. It collects, stores and distributes food to people in need. During the reporting period, the food bank supported a total of 759 people and families as outlined below:
| Date | Number of People Reached |
|---|---|
| March 2022 | 16 |
| April 2022 | 15 |
| May 2022 | 28 |
| June 2022 | 18 |
| July 2022 | 16 |
| August 2022 | 179 |
| September 2022 | 41 |
| October 2022 | 34 |
| November 2022 | 26 |
| December 2022 | 29 |
| January 2023 | 98 |
| February 2023 | 139 |
| March 2023 | 120 |
There is a growing need for the food bank within the community due to the ongoing economic and financial challenges. The majority of people who needed the food bank were from the local community, but there were 3 instances of people attending from outside the area. There was a significant increase in the number of people attending the food bank during August 2022, due to the school holidays. A large number of these people attend on a weekly basis and collect the food parcels themselves, but where necessary, a few are delivered to people’s homes.
Messy Church
Messy Church is a way of being church for families and others. It is Christ-centred, for all ages, based on creativity, hospitality and celebration. During the reporting period two sessions were held as follows:
held as follows: |
|||

These sessions are very popular within the community and are always over-subscribed.
Open the Book
Open Book is an exciting programme that offers primary school children an opportunity to hear key Bible stories, from a team of storytellers from the Church. During the reporting period, the Church presented the Open Book seven times in a number of schools. The stories are presented in a fun and interactive way that both children and teachers love.
Prison Ministry
Every fourth Sunday of the month one of the Trustees attends HM Prison Featherstone which s a Category C men’s prison, located in the village of Featherstone in Staffordshire, England. The Prison Ministry deliver a church service and invite the inmates to participate, which they are more than happy to do.
7
Befriending Service
The Church has a Befriending Team who offer a Befriending Service. This is a telephone service where the team calls on people who are referred to us that are struggling with loneliness.
Operation Christmas Child – November 2022
The Church took part in Operation Christmas Child, the world’s largest Christmas project of its kind, which has collected and delivered more than 209 million shoe box gifts to children in more than 170 countries and territories, and pastors and ministries use them to share the gospel of Jesus Christ. The shoe boxes go by plane, ship, river boat, camels, car, motorbike, and the boxes go to some of the remote places in the world and every box counts.
As well as the Church collecting shoe boxes and packing them for the children, they also became a distribution centre for the shoe boxes.

Place of Welcome
In February 2022, the Church joined a growing network of local community groups providing a place where everyone can go for a friendly face, a cup of tea and a conversation if and when they need it.
Warm Place
In the winter of 2022, the Church joined Birmingham Warm Welcome Spaces, which are vibrant local groups bringing people together and strengthens community ties. They provide free, safe, comfortable and welcoming places where people can come together to have a cup of tea or coffee or warm meal, take part in activities, access services, get practical advice and support, as well as meet members of their community.
Black Heritage Support Service
Black Heritage Support Service presented to the Church during a Sunday Service, and also attended a few Coffee Mornings. They provide advocacy that was created to close the disparity gap between the black community and other groups. They have helped a number of church members with advice.
Building Work
The Church started building work in the summer of 2022 to change the Church Hall into a Community Hub and Café. This work was completed in December 2022.
The Church held a fundraising concert on 18[th] March 2023 and a total of £910.45 was raised towards the Community Café. Relevant matters are submitted to the Church Meeting by the Diaconate or can be raised by members.

Financial Statements
Independent Examiner’s Report to the Trustees of Perry Beeches Baptist Church
I report on the accounts of the charity for the year ended 31[st] March 2023, which are set out on pages 13 to 19.
Respective Responsibilities of the Trustees and Examiner
The charity’s Trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity’s Trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144 of the Charities Act 2011 (the Charities Act) and that an independent examination is needed.
It is my responsibility to:
-
Examine the accounts under section 145 of the Charities Act,
-
To follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the Charity Commission (under section 145(5)(b) of the Charities Act, and
-
To state whether particular matters have come to my attention.
Basis of Independent Examiner’s Statements
My examination was carried out in accordance with general Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanation from the Trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a ‘true and fair’ view and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.
Independent Examiner’s Statement
There are no issues:
-
Which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in, any material respect, the requirements:
-
To keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act, and
-
To prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with the accounting requirements of the Charities Act have not been met, or
-
To which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
