What Would Mia Do Trust

Registration No 1198310

Annual report for a non-company charity to year ending 21[st] March 2023

Address: 32 York Close Southwater Horsham RH13 9XJ Trustees Stephen Hall - Chair Michelle Craen - Treasurer Peter Craen - Secretary Finlay Craen Steven Maddock Anthony McMahon

Structure of the Charity

The What Would Mia Do Trust was established in memory of Mia Craen who died on 30[th] January 2021. The Craen family received donations in Mia’s memory and towards funeral costs which exceeded those costs. The family decided to establish a Charity to disburse remaining donated funds and for future additional funds raised in Mia’s memory. Grants are awarded in accordance with the Objects of the charity, which are stated in the Model Trust Deed:

The purpose of the ‘What Would Mia Do Trust’ is the advancement of amateur sport and for young people between 5 and 18 years of age at the date of application resident in England or Wales.

This purpose will be achieved through the provision of financial support to help less privileged young people participate in sport*, in the format of grants or as the loan of equipment purchased and owned by the Trust.

Grants will be awarded at the discretion of Trustees for the purchase of one or more of the following: equipment, membership fees, subscription fees, entry fees and travel costs.

In most cases applicants will spend the grant and will then own the equipment. In some cases, the Trustee may choose to purchase and loan equipment, for example if a sport is being started and ongoing commitment is not confirmed. With the agreement of the Trustees, such equipment may subsequently owned by the applicant, for example, if the sport is continues to be pursued, or returned to the Trustee to be redistributed, sold or disposed of.

*’Less privileged’ is considered as where, without such support, the young person would be unable to realistically participate in their chosen sport.

The Trustees first met on 24 June 2021 to consider establishing the What Would Mia Do Trust. The Trust Model Deed was drafted dated 25[th] June 2021 and this became effective when registration was achieved with the Charity Commission on 22[nd] March 2022. Therefore, the Trust’s first Financial year

end is on 21[st] March 2023 and includes all financial transactions relating to funds received since Mia’s death which are now Charity funds.

Considerable challenges in finding any bank willing to open a new charity account caused registration to be achieved nine months after the Trust Model Deed was drafted. A bank account in the charity’s name could only be opened after registration was achieved. An account was opened with CAF Bank (Charities Aid Foundation) after they were willing to accept the application pending Charity Commission registration approval. CAF Bank incurs a monthly fee, unlike other banks who were approached.

Trustees

The Charity is a Trust, in accordance with Charity Commission guidelines. Three Trustees are from Mia Craen’s direct family. Two of the trustees are known to the family initially from work relationships and the other from a long-standing friendship.

There were no resignations or additional appointments.

Activities in the year

Since the Charity was first formed to year end 21[st] March 2023, the following activities have taken place:

The Trustees have been surprised at the low level of applications, despite the focus put on this. A key priority for the next financial year is to increase the rate of applications and disbursements.

Financial Review

Receipts and Payments Accounts have been produced in accordance with Charity Commission guidance for a non-company charity with income exceeding £25,000.

Since 30[th] January 2021 to the first year end on 21[st] March 2023, receipts were £ 33,848, payments were £ 3,034 and cash at year end was £ 30,814. All assets are held as cash.

The charity does not have a reserves policy and does not hold any funds as a custodian trustee.

The accounts and the independent examiner's report on the accounts are enclosed with this report.

In the period covered by this report income exceeded £25,000. The Trustees expect that income in subsequent years is likely to be less than £25,000.

Declarations

The Trustees declare that they have approved the trustee’s report above.

Signed on behalf of the charity’s trustees:
