Aims
The 2 aims of the charity are to offer a minibus with driver service to “Not for Profit” organisations and Young People and to run an “Open Award” DofE centre in York.
Spring 2022
The charity was launched in March 2022 with the help of a £2000 interest free loan.
Two minibuses were loaned to YAY which took over the running costs of those minibuses. The donor CIC will make use of the “Minibus with Driver” service in the future. YAY is now the registered keeper for each.
Two section 19 permits were received from the Traffic Commissioner and a maintenance schedule was put in place. The minibuses are stored at Moorlane Youth Centre.
## Summer 2022
The application for a DofE Directly Licenced Centre licence was done but it took a surprisingly long time for this to be delivered. The hold up seems to have been caused by a turnover of staff within DofE at a key point and for communications within DofE departments. The licence was not awarded until January 2023 so no DofE activity was possible within 2022.
A CIC used our group transport service over the summer to deliver school groups to their DofE expedition venues.
Autumn 2022 – Feb 2022
In September, York CVS mailed other charities and CICs working with Young People our details and our “Group transport” offer. This resulted in four charities getting in touch and asking for us to transport groups on evenings and at weekends. Over the following 6 months we did 16 trips with those charities.
We also contacted three schools to offer the youth group travel services. Only one school took up the offer but they were very pleased with us and used us for 12 times, mainly within York with sports teams but some went further. Our longest trip was Gateshead.
The DofE licence was finally granted and Young people were invited to join the Open Award group. These are mainly Year 12 students whose schools do not offer the Gold award. 7 Young People have joined with a view to doing expeditions in 2023 and a further 3 have joined looking to do expeditions in 2024. In addition, 37 Young People have transferred their DofE accounts to YAY from the defunct City of York Council group so that they are able to complete their awards and receive their Gold Certificates. Some of those have already completed their awards. This would not have been possible if the charity was not set up.
## March 2022
The initial loan was repaid and we are looking to build on our first year’s activities. We intend to run more visits for charities and schools and we intend to recruit more Young People to the Open Award DofE group.
The long term plan is to buy or lease our own electric minibuses. We hope to apply for grant funding for that.
