Halstead Community Shed Trustee Report
Like most projects. it started with the idea of getting a group of men together interested in
woodworking. In researching the idea further, the Trust came 8cross the Essex Shed Network, also
the UK Men's Shed Association and learnt about their work to prevent lonaliness and isolation in
older men. which gave a simple idea purpose.
.Sbed7.
Community Sheds, Men's Sheds, or simply Sheds, provide a space similarto a garden shed- a place
for pursuing practlC81 interests. practicing skills. and enjoying making and mending. However, the
key difference is that while garden sheds foster solitary activities, Sheds are centred around soci81
connections, friendship building. and the sharing of skills and knowledge. often accompanied by
laughter. Most importantly, Sheds have proven effective in reducing loneliness, isolation, and
depression. ultimately improving men's mental health and wellbeing.
Formed in February 2022, the trust aimed to establish a Men's Shed community project in Halstead.
In their search for suitable premises. they discovered the St John's Ambulance Station on Fenn Road
had been vacantfor 3years. Hopingto rent the workshop space, the trust approached St John's
Ambu18nce. only to learn the organisation planned to sell the building.
sm
Afterfurther research the Trust approached Braintree District Council about purchasing the
Ambulance Station and asked fortheir support. Through multiple meetings with Braintree's
Community Services, the Trust was advised that securing grant funding would require a
comprehensive project or business plan encompassing the entire building.
The trust spentthe next few months developing the'wellbeing at the Shed" project that would not
only encompass the whole building but also protect the building for the future by creating a focal
point for health 8nd wellbeing in Halstead.

In September 2023, the Trust secured a £296,000 grant from the Halstead Community Fund to
support its'wellbeing atthe Shed" initiative. This funding allowed the Trustto purchase the St John's
Ambulance station on Fenn Road, Halstead IC09 2HG} in December ofthatyear- an acquisition
they had long anti¢ip8ted.
Immediatelyfollowing the Christmas holiday, an enthusiastic team comprising ourTrustees,
volunteers. NHSvolunteers. and localtradespeople commenced renovations on the ambulance
station. Remarkably, phases 1 and 2 ofthe project were completed well ahead of the scheduled
completion date at the end of February 2024.
Movingforward. the completion of phase 2 renovations will allow the Training Rooms to host a range
of health and wellbeing activities focused on self-help starting in early March.
Currently we are in discussion with the following groups with some starting in March:
Eyoga- Offering Yoga classes
Senior Fit- Fitness classes for the over 60's
Senior Fit- Pilates
Crafty Girls - A social craft group
Hearing Help Essex
Sight Essex.
The Trust is in conversation with Primary Health and NHS Social Prescribers and Provide.
