| Summary of the main achievements of the charity, identifying the difference the charity’s work has made to the circumstances of its beneficiaries and any wider benefits to society as a whole. |
Para 1.20 | This report covers the first period of registration for Yere Dzikan (London) (1198123) a Charitable Incorporated Organisation first registered on 3rd March 2022. This report is prepared to 31st March 2023. The charity’s main activities are delivered in Ghana, West Africa and in this first year focused on a mentoring programme for girls in two senior high schools in the capital Accra. Delivery has taken place via face to face, telephone and digital channels at O’Riley and Labonne Senior High schools in conjunction with our partner organisation, Yere Dzikan LBG which is incorporated in Accra. A memorandum of understanding is in place which sets out the terms of this arrangement. Overview of activities Ten girls were initially selected for one-to-one sessions with the mentors. Following a launch event attended by parents, fellow pupils and the mentors the programme ran over nine months culminating in a graduation event in January 2023 at Labonne high school. Yere Dzikan mentors worked with the consent of parents and head teachers who also appointed |
coordinators in each school to act as liaison between the girls and the charity. In addition to making sure the girls were provided with a physical space to take part in the sessions, the coordinators were also custodians of the mobile phones purchased by our sister organisation to facilitate contact with the London based mentors. The charity’s work this year has also seen the delivery of two careers days, run for the benefit of the wider school. During each event the young people heard from professionals about their career journey and were given advice on choices and options. The events also included support from an educational psychologist who talked about some of the challenges faced in senior high school such as self-esteem, peer pressure and avoiding early pregnancy. Outcomes All ten girls completed the first programme. A summary of their evaluation showed that they had been proud to be selected and had enjoyed the programme. Feedback from the head teachers and school coordinators has provided evidence of a wider public benefit. They have emphasised the changes observed in the young women directly and also the knock-on effect on their friends and the girls who took part in the school wide events. Increased focus and confidence were consistently highlighted.
