The main aim of the charity Is to alleviate poverty in Sl*kburyness area and we seek to achieve this by the provision of free freshly cooked meals. free and low t05t perishable and non-perlshable food stuffs and tolletries. The Charity also offer5 a w#le range of children's clothing at token cost. Guests attendI￿d the Charity also have the opportunity, In prNate. of seeklng advice on matters of concem where they can be signposted to external agencles ¥the￿ the appropriate help mi8ht be given. Guests are also able to appty foi fuel voucher5. throu8h our partner Fuelbank, subject to meetln8 their ellglbility checks. Our Serv1￿ have expanded over the past year arKI a NHS Soctal p￿s¢￿ber re8ularly attends to assist 8uests where ￿sSIble. We have also stsrted a Book Bank which provides free books. as we recognise the benefit this brin8S to families in temis of literncy and studies have shown how access to Lwks improves sodal n￿bIlIty. Thls year hwe been able to introdute fresh frult and vegetables thanks io a"818 Sparw grant from Southend Council. We hope to contlnue this once inittal fundi￿ runs out. Vle wish to acknOw￿d8t ènd thank eath and every one ofor many donors and supporters wlthout whose generoslty the Charity could not provide the servlce that rt does. The Shoebury Ark Is managed and run exclusi¥tly by ￿paId volunteers and we wish to ihank e￿ry ST￿[e one for the effort arKI dedication that t￿ contribute towards the i)verall success of the Chaiity. The tharity has over I{￿* households from the SS3 ￿$t(¢￿e ￿lStered on our books with, genernlly. between 81>90 familles attending each week and about I￿2(￿) free meals haThJed out eath week. They meet and corNerse with the volunteers and other guests and for some of them this might be the only real sodal interaction forthem in their week Similarly the volunteers themselves benefit from working at The Shoebury Arl some usir* it as a me3rn5 to helping them into worK others simpty Ilk5ng the community and social interd(2ion. This has been my first year as the chair of trustees for the SIK)ebury Ark, and I can honestly say it has been a great encouragement. I was aware of their work and heard good things about tt. However, until you actually see the Ark in action. it is hard to get a grasp of the wsttive impact it has on the individuals that wt helps. Primarily. I was svrprised to see that the Ark is so much more than just a food bank. In addition to freshly cooked meals, to go aFon8side the tinned and boxed items. there are clothes. school uniforms, toys and books and all sorts of daily item5 awdilable that help alleviate the financial pressure that many of these frdmily are under. One thing that has surprised me is the sense of community that it has created. Every week people arrNe early to chat whilst they wait for the doors to open. I witnessed one Bentieman who comes every week and only gets one item of food but spends a8es chatting with different people. I can honestty say i am looking fonvard to another year as chair of trustees of this wonderful project. Revd K.
