SORP reference

|Summary of the main
achievements of the charity,
identifying the difference the
charity’s work has made to
the circumstances of its
beneficiaries and any wider
benefits to society as a
whole.|Para 1.20|We continue to work with tour guides on
the island of Sal to stop donations being
given out on tours. There is still a culture of
tours going to the same areas and giving
out tourist donations, this encourages
begging and children skipping school to
receive the donations ‘poverty tourism’ We
continue to encourage tour guides to
educate tourists on the poverty faced in
Cape Verde and to encourage tourists to
give donations to charities such as
ourselves for the above reasons and to
ensure they go to those in most need. We
have started working in the ex-pat
community as well, they often own bars
and restaurants and have a lot of
interaction with both locals and tourists.
Last year we were encouraged to see less
begging on tours, this year it seems to
have moved into the tourist city of Santa
Maria. We will continue our work to
educate tourists not to give.
We supported several sports teams and
associations in Sao Vicente, Sao Nicolau
and Santo Antao with new football team
shirts, used previous season team kits,
used boots, new quality footballs. The
associations we worked with provide
support on a variety of projects within their
communities including social inclusion,
crime prevention, drug/alcohol misuse,
sexual education and support for ex-gang
members.
We also supported a volley ball team in Sal
with kit and balls and provided a ladies
start up football team with kit, boots and
balls.
We organised 6 charity fun days, where we
invited tourists and local children to enjoy
fun games, football, basketball, gymnastics
and music. Some of the events also
enjoyed a hot meal together, at each event
we gave out donations of clothing and
essential toiletry supplies. These proved
popular and encouraged social inclusion.
In Cape Verde, children have access to
free and compulsory education for 8 years
however, equipment is not free. We started
a project last year to provide students with
the essential school supplies to enable
them to fully participate in education. pens,
pencils, notepads etc. This year we are
pleased to report we provided a further 304
students in Sao Vicente, Santo Antao and
Sao Nicolau.|
|---|---|---|

We provided those in need clothing and personal care packages. This was supported by 3420 kg of donations received from tourists using free charity luggage via tui.
