Chairs Report
We achieved charitable status in February 2022, since then things have gone from strength to strength mainly due to the hard work and tenacity of the board of trustees, Ange Williams and Katie Thompson. At the beginning of the year we were running 1 session per week, Home Ed drama classes, providing a creative outlet for young people who are home educated, this then led to a second weekly class, Dance and Drama, which initially attracted 15 attendees and has since grown over the year to a class of 30+. From this it has sprung half term workshop days, summer school weeks and term end performances.
Staged CIO provides a provision of arts in Biddulph East, which is a deprived area within Staffordshire Moorlands, and benefits the local community. We are based at Biddulph Town Hall where the facilities are good and provide a safe environment to run the sessions.
We have been very lucky for all the support within our first year with charitable status, and grateful to local funding from Biddulph Town Council, Tesco Groundwork, #IWILL community Foundation, Biddulph Mayors Charity, Biddulph Rotary, Staffordshire Council of Voluntary Youth Services.
As exciting as the last 12 months have been we are all looking forward to our future productions and the development of ‘Theatre for the ages’ which is an intergenerational project and received funding at the end of the year to perform at the annual Biddulph Festival in July 2023. As the year progresses, we hope to bring drama workshops into school to help alleviate funding crisis for arts within schools.

Purposes and Activities
To advance education in performance arts for public benefit, by providing support and activities which develop skills in theatre studies, for people of all ages, backgrounds and economic circumstances, in Staffordshire Moorlands and surrounding areas.
The vision that shapes our annual activities remains to be to the advancement of education and appreciation of the arts by the provision of facilities and recreation of the public in the fields of drama, dance and technical elements. The charity also has the general aim for contributing to the quality of life of the people in Staffordshire Moorlands by expanding their horizons through the provision of exciting, challenging and accessible performing arts for ages 7 and above.
The strategies employed to achieve the charity’s aims and objectives are to:
-
Provide a safe, friendly, and inclusive environment for all, by tackling aspiration and exclusion in an area of deprivation and disadvantage to the arts.
-
Improve mental and physical health and reduce social isolation.
-
Generate wider benefits for users, supporting them to gain confidence and acquire beneficial skills such as communication, team-working, decision making, social skills and creative thinking.
-
Work in partnership with organisations to deliver quality support services to raise the aspirations of the community, through learning new skills and being creative.
-
Classes and workshops for young people and parents designed to be active, informative, educational, and fun for the whole family.
-
Classes and workshops aimed particularly for vulnerable groups including those with Special Educational needs (SEN) and learning difficulties and disabilities (LDD).
-
Classes and workshops for more mature members of the community, to help reduce social isolation and build lasting relationships and connections within the community.
-
Inter-generational projects to bridge the gap between generations building positive relationships throughout the ages.
Putting these strategies into action we have provided four holiday activity workshops including; Performing Arts, Acting and Drama, Writing and Lighting and Auditioning techniques. 5 performances with our dance and drama group, 5 short showcases with our Home Education group, two weeks of Summer School and worked in partnership with Biddulph Perform Group participating in an intergenerational production. The groups have taken part in a fundraising event, raising over £300, and performed at the Town Councils Christmas light switch on event.
Most recently we have received funding from the National Lottery; Community Foundation as part of the #IWILL which is a UK wide campaign aiming to get young people involved in social action. For this project we will continue with an intergenerational project whereby the young people take on the role of project leaders, putting together an amateur production of a community written play, to be performed at the annual Biddulph Festival in July 2023 as a fundraising event for the charity.
We endeavor to encourage all ages within our community to take part in our activities and sessions. The performances we aim to provide are enjoyed by all for a donation. Affordability and access to our groups is important to us and is reflected in our pricing.

Testimonies and Feedback
Received from members parents:
“My son first joined Staged last summer for their week-long summer school. He thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The Staged team encouraged the children in everything that they did from prop design to lighting and writing scripts for their short performance pieces which were very entertaining. My son has now joined the weekly sessions that started in February and is really enjoying learning his part, and to his surprise, the dancing too. I would highly recommend Staged to friends, the children enjoy the sessions and grow in confidence by the week, encouraged by the supportive Staged team.”
“When my daughter was in year five she had been attending a musical theatre class at a local dance school and had performed in a couple of shows, she was intrigued by the whole experience and keen to do more. I saw Staged were offering holiday activities and my daughter attended all the ones
available and loved it from the off. She was so talkative each time she came home, telling us about how she had written scripts, made sets and even knew how to change lighting and asked if there were more sessions. When Staged started their after school club she signed up straight away and asked friends to join too, which one did. She looks forward to going each week and has met lots of children from the whole town. I can’t praise the team highly enough for their dedication and passion for theatre and their enthusiasm to pass this on to the children.”
Acting in 'Staged' has had a highly beneficial effect upon my son on many levels; Having to master a demanding script has taken him out of his comfort zone and given him the confidence to realize just what he is capable of. The script itself is highly thought provoking and challenges all those involved to consider how lives are impacted by loneliness and social problems. The experience of working as a team, whether in writing, acting or backstage, is a positive opportunity to develop new skills in an encouraging, socially inclusive environment. The 'Staged' unique selling point is that it is featuring an original script written by local people which is brought to life by the brilliance of the directors, and that anyone is welcome to be involved whether it be acting or backstage support. There is a tremendous feeling of everyone working together to produce a great play!
“My 2 oldest come to Staged every Monday. They both have disabilities and find it very difficult to fit in. Every week there's always something that they enjoy and some weeks my oldest comes away feeling so proud of himself which happens so rarely, it's absolutely wonderful to see.”
“Staged has helped my daughter realise her passion and flair for acting and theatre and given her the opportunity to perform on stage for the first time. Staged has also introduced her to Shakespeare and Charles Dickens and broadened her knowledge of Greek myths. She has thoroughly enjoyed all the sessions she has attended and has learned a lot and her self-confidence on stage has come on in leaps and bounds.”
