1 ## **BML TRUSTEE REPORT: 2022-23** Beginning 19 Sept, 2022, the four BML workshops (First Year Composer/Lyricist, Second Year Composer/Lyricist, Advance Composer/Lyricist, and Librettists) each met for 34 sessions, running through 19 July,2023. There were between 80 and 85 writers actively involved during the year. With outside facilitators, extra sessions were scheduled on giving & receiving feedback and on working with neuro-diverse and disabled artists. A new Administrator, Jordana Belaiche, replaced Sarah Middleton in April, working with Programme Director David James and Admin Associate Natasha Ochrant. There was a big push during the last year to strengthen and diversify the board, and it has added four new members. The board had an ‘away day’ in June with an expert trainer, and they have formed four enthusiastic sub-groups to work between official board meetings, with major attention to comms., fundraising, and brand awareness. The board are still actively looking to fill two or three key roles. BML received its biggest Arts Council project funding to date, for almost £30k. Part of this was a grant for members of our Advanced group to work with acting students at the Central School of Speech and Drama (CSSD) over a period of weeks on specific projects, with an internal showcase at the end of the process. (CSSD had approached us about the project, and they now want to repeat it next year.) The other part of the grant helped us build infrastructure, including improving tech facilities and equipment for the workshops. BML produced a showcase at the Crazy Coqs/ Brasserie Zedel (space donated by the management) in June for our Second Year participants before they move on to the Advanced group. BML is also planning an industry showcase for members of the Advanced group in October, 2023, to be curated by Mark Warman as Musical Director, who leads the group, with paid West End performers. This will raise awareness of the group members talents and introduce them to potential commissioners. BML wants this to be an annual event with a fixed date in the calendar, so that industry professionals expect it in their annual calendar. Besides two ‘Taster’ sessions for potential applicants for the 23-24 intake, BML held a taster masterclass at Mercury Musical Developments’ BEAM conference in Oxford in May. This led to significantly more applicants this year for both the First Year and the Librettists groups. After extended social media outreach as well, we held auditions on 23/24 July and on 1 August for our next First Year group, which will begin sessions in September 2023. We anticipate 24 members for the First Year Group and 14 new members for the Librettists. 2 BML always tries to work closely with all its members to ensure they have an enriching experience that will help them become stronger writers. Liz Bennett, a mature member of the Advanced group, serves as a ‘pastoral care’ contact, if members have issues they would like to discuss, that, hopefully, we can resolve or mediate. Questionnaires are periodically sent to the members to assess how they think they’re doing and how we might further help them. There is a great deal of comradeship and support between them all. There will be a beginning-of-term meet-and-greet event at a friendly pub in September as well as a Christmas ‘do’ in December. BML is looking forward to beginning their 14[th] year of operations.
