There are five Trustees of the Charity. The object of Manchester Advanced Trauma Training is the advancement of health for public benefit by educating healthcare professionals about major trauma. ## Courses in 2022 and 2023 ## “Firefighting” for Surgical Teams: the Manchester Trauma Course In April 2022, we ran our flagship course “Firefighting” for Surgical Teams. This three-day, multiprofessional course was developed following the 2017 Manchester Arena Attack. It was initially designed to address the training needs of surgeons who only meet trauma on very rare occasions to permit them to maintain their decision-making and operative skill sets. The course in April 2022 was the fourth iteration of the course and has changed significantly in its format. The first day consists of lectures with key messages followed by simulation exercises. Teams of multi-professionals, similar to those teams who would be receiving a trauma patient, resuscitate the mannequin and de-brief about what went well and could be improved. This day is designed to create a shared mental model of trauma management and for some of the human factors that affect patient care to be explored. The following two days are spent in the cadaveric laboratory with a focus on practical procedures and surgical skills. The feedback from this course was excellent and presented at a national conference (Royal College of Emergency Medicine 2022). The financial costs to MATT were minimal, and most of the course was funded by other charitable bodies. Some modest sponsorship was obtained. 65 people were trained on this course. ## Thoracotomy course On 21[st] November 2022, we ran a one-day, cadaveric course undertaking resuscitative chest procedures. The course was aimed at pre-hospital and emergency department doctors and nurses. It featured key-decision making skills, case studies as well as the opportunity to practice surgical manoeuvres. The funding was predominantly obtained from Manchester Foundation Trust. 20 people were trained on this course. 3 | P a g e ## Resuscitative Procedures Course On 3[rd] January 2023, a one-day, bespoke cadaveric course was held to train pre-hospital and emergency department doctors, nurses and paramedics in the surgical procedures they may be called to do under austere circumstances. 35 people attended. The informal feedback was excellent and MATT continues to receive requests to run the course again. This course formed part of a suite of courses run in the first week of January 2023. MATT partnered with the Orthocycle charity to deliver the suite of courses. Funding was obtained from Health Education England, Northwest (now NHS England) and medical technology companies who produce orthopaedic equipment. The cadaveric specimens represent the bulk of the cost for these courses. The specimens, and their cost, was shared across the courses. A modest fee was charged to the participants to ensure there was not a shortfall. ## “Firefighting” for Orthopaedic Teams: Damage Control On 4[th] and 5[th] January 2023, an orthopaedic version of the flagship “Firefighting” course was held in Manchester. It consisted of one day of simulation training and one day of cadaveric skills, very similar to the original offering but with the practical skills for the surgeons geared towards orthopaedics. This course was multi-professional with the premise of training in teams as one would work. This course was part of the combined offering from the Orthocycle-MATT partnership described previously. Again, a modest fee was charged of the participants to ensure all costs could be covered. ## Plans for next 12 months Sustainability of the organisation is a concern given the part-time nature of the volunteers running MATT. Again, a modest fee was charged of the participants to ensure all costs could be covered. ## **Public benefit** The trustees have given due regard to the charity commissions guidance on public benefit and are confident that the charity meets the criteria. ## **FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS** Plans for next 12 months: Sustainability of the organisation is a concern given the part-time nature of the volunteers running MATT. Accessing administrative support is going to be a priority. I have examined your charity's accounts as required under section 145 of the Charities Act 2011 ('the Act'). In carrying out my examination I have followed the Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act. My role is to state whether any material matters have come to my attention giving me cause to believe: 1. that accounting records were not kept as required by section 130 of the Act; or 2. that the accounts do not accord with those records; or 3. that the accounts do not comply with the accounting requirements of the Act; or 4. that there is further information needed for a proper understanding of the accounts. ## **Independent examiner's statement** I have completed my examination and have no concerns in respect of the matters (1) to (4) listed above and, in connection with following the Directions of the Charity Commission I have found no matters that require drawing to your attention. ACCOUNTING POLICIES** ## **Accounting convention** The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention, and in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard for Smaller Entities (effective April 2008), the Charities Act 2011 and the requirements of the Statement of Recommended Practice, Accounting and Reporting by Charities. ## **Incoming resources** All incoming resources are included on the Statement of Financial Activities when the charity is legally entitled to the income and the amount can be quantified with reasonable accuracy. ## **Resources expended** Expenditure is accounted for on an accruals basis and has been classified under headings that aggregate all cost related to the category. Where costs cannot be directly attributed to particular headings they have been allocated to activities on a basis consistent with the use of resources. ## **Taxation** The charity is exempt from tax on its charitable activities. ## **Fund accounting** Unrestricted funds can be used in accordance with the charitable objectives at the discretion of the trustees. Restricted funds can only be used for particular restricted purposes within the objects of the charity. Restrictions arise when specified by the donor or when funds are raised for particular restricted purposes. Further explanation of the nature and purpose of each fund is included in the notes to the financial statements. ## **2.
