## **REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31ST MAY 2024**

## **Trustee Selection**

The original set of trustees was selected based on proximity to Katharine, but also by trying to match the needs of the charity to skills of the individuals. As we move towards the end of the 2nd year of the charity, we have started to discuss (in trustees meetings) the needs of the charity going forwards, and the individuals we will look to approach as part of the transfer of trustees in the future. As part of this review Stephen Rutherford ceased his role as a trustee in the year, and will be replaced in February 2025.

## **Objectives and Activities**

To advance health and save lives through (1) The promotion of public awareness of glioblastoma and the issues surrounding the condition (2) The provision of grants to organisations focusing on advancement in understanding and treatment of Glioblastoma

As these accounts relate to the 2nd year of the charity’s existence, the main activities relating to this year have been fundraising events to accrue funds to enable the provision of grants mentioned above.

There have been a number of events that have taken place during this time namely:

- 1 Bath half marathon 2023 (October) runners organised by Wendy and Gareth Cooper (Trustee)

- 2 Bath half marathon 2024(March) runners organised by Wendy and Gareth Cooper (Trustee) 3 Personal donations from charity supporters

From an awareness perspective the charity Facebook page has received hundreds of new visits, and remains home to the charity video which describes what the charity does and why it exists.

## **Achievements and Performance**

In its 2nd year, the charity accounts stand at £42,169.20. As mentioned last year, the charity funds also benefited from us transferring over the funds which were previously left in the community bank account, which was used whilst the charity was being set up

This year the main difference the charity has made has been issuing its first grant, given to Action Medical research for Children. The specific grant we have made, will contribute to funding a study, led by Professor Anderson and Dr Donovan at UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health, and will aim to develop new treatments for high-risk brain cancer in children, specifically Medulloblastoma and high-grade gliomas. These immunotherapy treatments, called chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cell therapy, have already been used effectively in treating some blood cancers treatments, and will be designed to be both gentler (which is very important given the side effects of current treatments), and more effective than current treatments for children.

## **INDEPENDENT EXAMINER'S REPORT ON THE ACCOUNTS**

Report to the trustees of Katherine Rutherford's Sunshine Glioblastoma Foundation on the accounts for the year ended 31st May 2024 set out on pages 7 to 9.

## **RESPECTIVE RESPONSIBILITIES OF TRUSTEES AND EXAMINER**

The charity's trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year (under section 144 (2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the Act)) and that an independent examination is needed.

It is my responsibility to:

- examine the accounts (under section 145 of the Act),

- to follow the procedures laid down in the General Directions given by the Charity Commission (under section 145 (5) (b) of the Act), and

- state whether particular matters have come to my attention.

## **BASIS OF INDEPENDENT EXAMINER'S STATEMENT**

My examination was carried out in accordance with General Directions given by the Charity Commissioners. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the organisation and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a 'true and fair view' and the report is limited to those matters set out in the

## **INDEPENDENT EXAMINER'S STATEMENT**

In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention:

- (1) which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements:

   - to keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the Act; and

   - to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with the accounting requirements of the Act have not been met; or

- (2) to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
