## **Feline Fur Babies North Wales**

## **Trustees Report 2025**

Feline Fur babies North Wales primary aim is to relieve the suffering of cats and kittens in need of support, to provide rescue homes and other facilities that enable the care and treatment of these animals.

Our main aims continue to include: -

- Providing food, shelter and veterinary care to all the cats and kittens coming into our care

- The offer of a safe place for the feral population, getting them veterinary care should they require it and if possible, returning them to their original home.

- Ensuring all cats coming into our care are found safe loving homes when they leave us

- Making sure home checks are carried out as these are essential in assuring a cat is going to be well looked after in a loving new home.

We ensure all cats and kittens coming into our care are taken to the vet where they are given a full medical, neutered, vaccinated, have a flea and worming treatment applied and microchipped. All our charges are then either housed in our catteries or in most cases go to one of our fosterers. In either case they are given the love and attention they deserve.

As stated in previous Trustee Reports, these activities are integral to the charity’s pursuit and objectives. Our aim, as always, is to ensure that all the cats and kittens are provided with essential care, and every effort is made to find loving homes.

The trustees once again confirm their adherence to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit, recognising the importance of aligning their activities with the broader welfare of the public and the specific needs of cats and kittens in their care.

Feline Fur Babies North Wales is committed to fulfilling its stated purposes by actively engaging in activities that not only rescue and care for feline companions but also contribute to the well-being of the community at large. Through transparent and accountable practices, the charity strives to make a positive impact on both the feline population and the individuals who choose to adopt and support their mission.

We are still homing around 200 cats per year; that’s over 1200 since we started in 2020. This year has been no different. Due to the present economic situation, we, and we suspect other animal charities, have seen a stream of cats needing help, with still many more in need. We continually aim to reduce the feral population by neutering as many as we can and if possible, homing them.

In June we saw four boxes dumped outside a Vets, each box contained a female cat and litter of between four and five kittens. We took them in. unfortunately we lost five kittens but were able to save the rest and eventually home both the mums and kittens. It is at times like these that we are grateful to our dedicated fosterers who helped look after them.

We still have some cats with long-term illnesses living with fosterers who continue to see to their veterinary and dietary needs.

## **Public Benefit Statement**

The trustees confirm they have complied with the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit. By rescuing and rehoming cats, offering community volunteering opportunities through schools and colleges, and reducing the stray population, Feline Fur Babies North Wales significantly contributes to both animal welfare and community well-being.

The people who request our help are in the most part cat owners themselves and are worried about the impact stray/feral cats are having on their domestic cats. Some feral cats can be aggressive towards a domestic cat viewing them as a rival. if we can trap and tame, we will, some are trapped and unable to be tamed so are rehomed to a farm and in some suitable cases the feral is returned to its previous home once neutered.

The impact this can have on a family dealing with ferals can be enormous as they finally feel their beloved domestic cat is safe from possible attack.

## **Risk Management**

The trustees have identified the following key risks and mitigation strategies:

- **Financial risk:** Ongoing efforts to diversify income streams through innovative fundraising and grant applications.

- **Volunteer dependency:** Continuous recruitment and training of volunteers to ensure smooth operations.

- **Cat health risks:** Strict adherence to veterinary guidelines and biosecurity measures to prevent disease outbreaks

## **Volunteers - 27**

We are very grateful to have such dedicated volunteers who give time and effort to ensure the cats in our care get the best possible start moving forward. At the moment we have 6 volunteering at the Prestatyn Cattery, 4 at the Rhyl Cattery and 2 at the Kitten House

Our volunteers bring diverse skills, fostering a sense of community and shared responsibility. These skills not only enhance to day-to-day running of the charity but impact the well-being of the cats in our care. Their interaction with the cats allows them to gain a level trust in the humans looking after them.

We have a dedicated team of 15 Volunteers keeping our charity shops running. They work under our trustee/manager Allison, to ensure that all runs smoothly. The shops are well stocked with clothing and other items. Their interaction with the public is very important and our shop volunteers excel at that. We are extremely grateful for their dedication

We continue to invite students from the local college to come to us on work placement, this year we have had 5 placements. They have proved invaluable getting to know the cats and kittens, helping to socialise them. Their help running the catteries in Prestatyn and Rhyl, cleaning and feeding is very much appreciated,

## **Fosterers - 10**

We are fortunate to have an amazing group of 10 fosterers who care for the cats in their charge, giving the kittens the best start and helping older cats to adjust to a new life. We are so very grateful to them.

Our volunteers and fosterers continue to work across all aspects of the charity from

- Maintaining the two catteries.

- Fostering cats and kittens.

- Supporting the smooth running of our two charity shops.

- Participating in fundraising activities

Els continues to run what we still affectionately call our Kitten House. She and her partner are instrumental in giving the kittens the best possible start in life. Some are abandoned while others have mothers who may not, for several reasons, be able to feed them.

Our long-term cats are equally well looked after. Skye is still with Clare battling Feline Hysteria but with medication is doing well.

Unfortunately, Tammy who was on a special diet for Thyroid trouble. passed away. Alexis now has Umbreon and Felix

All cats on medication and special diets are doing well and much loved by their fosterers.

## **Stories from this year**

## **Glorfindel and Galdor**

On 8[th] January 2025 we rescued two abandoned cats, found in an alley, sealed in a knee-high laundry basket. We do not know how long they had been there before a passerby heard them crying.

Glorfindel ginger and Galdor black refused to eat much for 2 weeks and after neutering we noticed a worrying weight loss.

Galdor completely traumatised and behaving like a feral.

They both had to be crated in the Rhyl cattery, gradually being coaxed with loving care and special food at £6 a tin to get them to eat.

They are both slowly starting to eat so will hopefully gain our trust so we can find them a loving home.

## **Tillys Story**

Tilly is a 19-year-old cat whose owner died just before Christmas 2024.

Chrissy was poorly with Covid and unable to help but James, our homing co-ordinator, decided to foster her himself as the family were very stressed not knowing what to do with Tilly.

James had so many pictures and videos of her he was able to home her in 3 weeks.

Tilly is now settled in her new home and much loved.

## **Kitten Covered in Fleas**

September 2024 - Tabby was a female with five kittens, all of them covered in fleas. The owner had taken them to a vet but sadly. one kitten passed away. The infestation was too bad for the little one to cope with. The owner came to us desperate to help the kittens but unable to do so himself. Tabby originally had six kittens; of the five that came to us one kitten was very, very tiny.

Chrissy and Judith (Trustee) combed each one individually to kill the fleas and gave them a spot on flea treatment. It was clear this was a very bad infestation and the prospects of any of them surviving was small.

It was no surprise, but very sad, that Campari, the runt, although clear of fleas and seemingly eating well, suddenly died at about 11 weeks old. Thankfully the other four, although tiny themselves, thrived had their vaccination courses and have been homed. Tabby, the mum went back to her owner once she had been checked and spayed by the vet.

## **Cats and Kittens Abandoned in Cardboard Boxes**

One of the most distressing cases we had this year was receiving four boxes, each containing a Mum and her kittens. Air holes had been punched in the cardboard box then the boxes had been sealed and dumped on a fly tipping site. Luckily some passersby heard them crying and took them to Prospect House Veterinarian Practice in Colwyn Bay. The vet called us to see if we could help. We immediately took them in, finding four mums with 17 kittens between the four boxes.

We had an article in the local paper to put out an SOS for food and litter; the response was amazing with offers coming in from all over the area.

Several of the kittens were very small and weak and unfortunately over the next few days didn’t survive. The ones that did survive needed a lot of care and attention but are now thriving. We don’t think any of the mums were more than a year old so babies themselves.

The mums are going off to new loving homes and the remaining kittens will soon follow.

## **Future Plans**

The charity aims to:

- To continue rescue and rehome as many cats and kittens as possible.

- Find new fundraising initiatives to improve financial sustainability. Cat Cuddle Days are proving popular with many people unable to have pets in their rented accommodation coming along for that special half hour of contact.

We aim to continue with these events always making sure none of the cats present are showing signs of stress. If they do, they are removed immediately.

- To make every effort to recruit more volunteers to support the catteries and charity shop operations. A recent Cat Cuddle event brought 5 new volunteers. We aim to continue to use such events to recruit.

- Re-assess the website. Our present site is not achieving the response we had hoped so we are looking at ways we can make it more functional, to enable us to reach more supporters and promote adoption.

## **Financial Summary**

We present the financial overview for the year ended 31 March 2025. The charity’s total income amounted to £123,661 (2024: £101,979).

During the year, the charity was fortunate to receive dedicated support from two generous funders. A grant of £5,002 from The Marchig Animal Welfare Trust was fully applied to vital improvements to our catteries, helping to create a safer and more comfortable environment for the animals in our care.

The charity also received £8,000 of restricted funding from the Pets Foundation. This comprised £4,000 towards veterinary costs, to be used exclusively in line with the grant criteria, and £4,000 in Pets Club (formerly VIP Lifeline) vouchers. The vouchers were used to purchase essential supplies such as food and cat litter. All restricted funds were applied during the year in accordance with the terms of the grant and provided vital support in meeting the welfare needs of the charity’s cats and kittens.

During the year, the charity’s total expenditure was £127,085 (2024: £102,447), reflecting the trustees’ continued commitment to providing high-quality veterinary care and maintaining facilities to ensure a safe and nurturing environment for the animals.

The trustees note that while income and expenditure have remained broadly consistent year on year, costs increased due to higher veterinary and shop overheads. This resulted in a deficit of £3,424 for the year (2024: deficit of £468).

At the year end, the charity held cash balances of £7,324 (2024: £10,748), which the trustees consider sufficient to enable the charity to continue its rescue and rehoming work and meet its short-term obligations.

The trustees remain satisfied that the charity is financially stable and continues to operate effectively within its means.

The financial statements have been prepared on a receipts and payments basis in accordance with the Charities Act 2011.

## **Fundraising**

The charity continued to fundraise through its two charity shops, online fundraising activities, raffles and community events such as Cat Cuddle Days. Donated goods for resale are not valued or recorded as stock; income is recognised when items are sold in line with receipts and payments accounting.

We are grateful to all supporters and volunteers who make these possible. The charity does not engage commercial fundraisers or professional fundraising agencies.

## **Reserves Policy**

The trustees aim to maintain reserves sufficient to cover approximately two months of routine expenditure to provide a cushion against unexpected costs or temporary income reductions.

At 31 March 2025, unrestricted cash funds stood at £7,324 (2024: £10,748), which the trustees consider adequate for the charity’s current level of activity. Any surplus funds are reinvested to support cattery improvements, veterinary bills and animal welfare initiatives.
