## **Trustees Report**

Feline Fur Babies North Wales continues to exist to relieve the suffering of cats and kittens in need of support and attention and to provide rescue homes and other facilities to enable the care and treatment of these animals.

Our main aims include: -

- Provision of shelter, food, veterinary care to the cats and kittens that come into our care.

- The offer of a safe haven for the feral population to ensure they receive veterinary care should they need it and are returned to their original home if possible.

- Ensuring that a safe home is provided when the time comes to rehome our charges. Home checks are essential in assuring us that a cat is going to be well looked after in its new home.

All the cats and kittens in our care are taken to the vet, neutered, have flea and worming treatments, vaccinated and microchipped. They are given the loving care they deserve.

As stated in our last Trustee Report, these activities are integral to the charity’s pursuit and objectives. We aim to ensure that all cats and kittens are provided with essential care, and every effort is made to find loving homes.

This year we have been able to home 191 cats. All 191 have been vet checked, neutered, had flea and worming treatment and vaccinated. Unfortunately, we were unable to help another 21. They either died of an illness, (predominantly cat flu), previous neglect or had to be put to sleep because of an inoperable condition. This is always a last resort as we strive to nurse back to health all who come into our care if possible.

We estimate we have homed around 800 cats and kittens since we started in 2020 averaging approximately 200 per year.

There are still many more needing our help. We aim to rescue and home as many as we possibly can thus reducing the stray population.

Any with long term illnesses we put with a dedicated fosterer who look after their needs including visits to the vet or special dietary requirements.

## **Public Benefit Statement**

The trustees confirm they have complied with the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit. By rescuing and rehoming cats, offering community volunteering opportunities, and reducing the stray population, Feline Fur Babies North Wales significantly contributes to both animal welfare and community well-being.

The people who request our help are in the most part cat owners themselves and are worried about the impact stray/feral cats are having on their domestic cats. Some feral cats can be aggressive towards a domestic cat viewing them as a rival. if we can trap and tame, we will, some are trapped and rehomed to a farm and in some suitable cases the feral is returned to its previous home once neutered.

The impact this can have on a family dealing with ferals can be enormous as they finally feel their beloved domestic cat is safe from possible attack.

## **Risk Management**

The trustees have identified the following key risks and mitigation strategies:

**----- Start of picture text -----**
 Financial risk: Ongoing efforts to diversify income streams through innovative
fundraising and grant applications.

Volunteer dependency: Continuous recruitment and training of volunteers to ensure
smooth operations.
 Cat health risks: Strict adherence to veterinary guidelines and biosecurity measures
to prevent disease outbreaks.
**----- End of picture text -----**
## **Volunteers**

We are very grateful to the volunteers who give their time and effort to ensuring the cats in our care are given the best possible start on their new journey. They are dedicated, compassionate and committed. At present we have 32 volunteers working across all aspects of the charity.

- Maintaining the two catteries.

- Fostering cats and kittens.

- Supporting the smooth running of our two charity shops.

- Participating in fundraising activities.

Volunteers bring diverse skills, fostering a sense of community and shared responsibility. These skills not only enhance to day-to-day running of the charity but impact the well-being of the cats in our care. Their interaction allows the cats to gain a level trust in the humans looking after them which they take with them to their new homes.

16 volunteers keep our charity shops running. They work under our manager Allison, to ensure that all runs smoothly. The shops are well stocked with clothing and other items. The interaction with the general public is important and our shop volunteers excel at that. We are very grateful for their dedication.

This year we have had 6 students from the local college on work placement. They have proved invaluable in running the catteries in Prestatyn and Rhyl. Cleaning and feeding, getting to know the cats and kittens, helping to socialise them.

We try at the end of their placement to give them a booklet charting what they have done, with pictures of the cats and kittens they have helped. Although in its infancy we hope to continue and expand this work.

## **Fosterers**

Our fosterers are an amazing group of people who care for the cats in their charge, giving the kittens the best start and helping older cats to adjust to a new life. We are so very grateful to them.

## **Trustees Report**

We have 10 fosterers who take cats and kittens into their own homes till they are ready for a new adventure in a new home.

Els runs what we affectionately call the kitten house in her home, she and her partner look after any kittens we have, getting them socialised and ready to move on

Tammy is still with us having long term thyroid issues. Kate is fostering her making sure she receives the special food she needs to control her problem.

Clare is still providing a safe environment for Skye, who is battling Feline Hysteria

Umbreon is with Alexis and Bruiser has now finally gone to a loving home.

Sadly, we lost our long-term cat Fitz this year

## **Some other stories from this year**

Whisky and Cognac came to us in 29[th] September 2024 due to a relationship breakdown. The new landlord refused to allow the two cats even though the owner had, had them since kittens.

Two lovely 3-year-old cats now in new homes. The original owner wanted to help at the weekend so she could spend time with her cats, this turned out to be an asset as she now cleans the cattery on a Sunday and is assisting with our website, applying for grants

Martell came to us on 8[th] November 2024 having been found in a sealed box with her five kittens. The finder took them in until she could arrange for them to come to us. We think the kittens were between 6-7 weeks old and had obviously been handled as they were so tame. Sadly, one kitten died.

Martell wasn’t the best mother and wasn’t interested in the kittens once they were with us, it turned out that she was only a kitten herself with the vet estimating she was only 6-months old.

By this time the kittens were around 9-weeks old meaning she was pregnant at 12-weeks, just a baby herself.

We have a home lined up for her when she is ready to go. The kittens have had a worming treatment to get rid of a bad infestation and are now gaining weight and ready to have their vaccinations. They will soon go up for adoption.

Three cats were being fed by an elderly lady who sadly had late-stage cancer. All she wanted was to find them good homes and for them to be well looked after.

Twinks, a 5-year-old lovely tabby was her own cat who we rehomed within two weeks to another elderly lady where she is very much loved as she was with her previous owner.

Felix and Sweetie were strays that had turned up in her garden, both un-neutered males, both a bit timid.

Felix - We are having difficulty homing Felix due to ongoing ear infections which cause his head to tilt. He is also very domineering in the cattery so needs a home where he is the only cat.

Sweetie – The lady we got her from said she was a female as she lived up to her name and is a real sweetie however it turned out Sweetie is male.

Sadly, the elderly lady has now passed away. We received a donation from her estate and the grateful thanks from her family for the help provided during this sad time in putting their mother’s mind at rest that her cats were safe and well looked after.

## **Trustees Report**

Jerry was brought into us on 28[th] November 2024, he had been a stray for some time until one lady decided to contact us as she could see he had some trouble with his ears.

He was taken to Rhianfa Veterinary Centre in Rhyl as an emergency as the ear was smelling and causing him discomfort. Sadly, he was found to have tumours in his ear, and it was recommended that he be put to sleep, which he was. Jerry was a lovely tabby cat, possibly around 7-8 years of age. If he hadn’t been left behind and had seen a vet earlier, he may have been able to save him. The only comfort for us is that he is no longer suffering.

## **Fundraising**

Fundraising is always an issue and getting harder due to the present economic climate.

We have continued to run raffles, lotto, quizzes, on-line auctions and Kitten Cuddle events.

This year our shop manager Allison attended Prestatyn Carnival promoting Feline fur Babies.

We like many other charities are looking at new ways to generate funds and rely on volunteers to help us with this.

This year we launched our website, felinefurbabies.org.uk, which is up and running but still a work in progress.

We are grateful to James and Deborah who are looking into how we best use it.

## **Future Plans**

The charity aims to:

- Increase the number of cats and kittens rescued and rehomed annually.

- Develop new fundraising initiatives to improve financial sustainability.

- Expand volunteer recruitment efforts to support cattery and charity shop operations.

- Enhance the website’s functionality to better engage supporters and promote adoption.

## **Financial Summary**

We present the financial overview for the year ended 31/03/2024. The charity's total income amounted to £101,979 (2023: £101,578), which included an unrestricted grant of £10,005 (2023: £5,000) generously provided by Denbighshire County Council. This significant grant supported essential improvements to our catteries, enhancing the facilities for the well-being of the animals in our care.

During the period, the charity's total expenditure was £102,447 (2023: £90,362), reflecting our unwavering commitment to providing high-quality veterinary care and maintaining our facilities to ensure a safe and nurturing environment for the animals.

This resulted in a small deficit of £468 for the year (2023: surplus of £11,216). Despite this, the charity's financial position remains stable, with a cash carry-forward of £10,748 (2023: £11,216).

We remain immensely grateful to Denbighshire County Council, as well as our donors, supporters, and volunteers, whose contributions enable us to carry out our vital mission.
