The charity is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) association formed on 2 February 2022 and is governed by a constitution. Prior to becoming a CIO, the organisation operated as an unincorporated community association.

## **Objectives and activities**
## **The charity's objects**
To advance equality and diversity for the public benefit for people seeking sanctuary by collaborating as a network of individuals and organisations and promoting activities that foster understanding between people from diverse backgrounds and welcome people who have made Calderdale their home.
To promote social inclusion for the public benefit by preventing people in Calderdale from becoming socially excluded, and relieving the needs of those people within Calderdale who are socially excluded by reason of their refugee or asylum seeker status and assisting them to integrate into society.
## **The charity's main activities**
Calderdale Valley of Sanctuary has continued to facilitate, enable and grow the network of organisations and residents who support our aim to make Calderdale a place of welcome for people seeking asylum and refugees.
This has been achieved through a variety of methods including creating videos demonstrating what our members do to welcome people seeking sanctuary, Creating a video focussing on the strengths of people seeking sanctuary, taking part in campaigns to highlight the huge challenges that the current political and legal system presents to those seeking asylum, raising awareness locally of these issues and connecting members to create events which have a greater and wider impact.
## **Public benefit statement**
In setting our objectives and planning our activities our Trustees have given serious consideration to the Charity Commission’s general guidance on public benefit and in particular equality and diversity.
## **Achievements and performance**
Calderdale valley of sanctuary has had some milestone during the year, we have been able to meet our set targets and in some cases exceed them.
- Working very closely with Libraries. Raising awareness amongst their staff and their services and how they can support people seeking sanctuary
- Beech Hill Primary School became the first School of Sanctuary in Calderdale and is now supporting and mentoring other schools who are interested
- The establishment of 3 networks.
- We have a growing and active Schools Network.
- A Food Network bringing together members who focus activities around sharing food
- Culture Network bringing together arts organisations and ensuring that the voice of people seeking sanctuary informs other culture networks
- Trustee recruitment-we now have 7 trustees and 4 with experience of the asylum system. This experience and insight is key to ensuring that we remain focussed on the changes that make a real difference to the lives of those making Calderdale their home
- A successful co-ordination of refugee week 2022, an ongoing planning and co-ordination of the upcoming refugee week 2023.

## **Achievements and performance (continued)**
- Achieving charitable status.
- The success of “I am skilful, I am talented” video project, funded by Wharfedale Foundation. This focussed on strength based stories and the skills and expertise that people seeking sanctuary bring to our communities. A key part of the project was training a group of people seeking sanctuary to be able to film and edit video footage . The project was highlighted in national coverage
- 12 High Quality Videos featuring our Members, as part of Calderdale Welcomes You Project.
- Regular, high-quality Monthly newsletter with double the ‘’ of the national industry standard.
- 500% increase of supporters, and 100% increase in Members.
## **Financial review**
The net receipts for the period were £5,832, including net receipts of £764 on unrestricted funds and net receipts of £5,068 on restricted funds after transfers.
## **Reserves policy**
The charity's free reserves, at the period end were £764.
The trustees have not adopted a formal reserves policy. There are very few overhead costs, and the majority of core expenditure is met from the Stronger Neighbourhoods restricted grant. The trustees will explore whether adequate unrestricted reserves can be obtained in future grant applications.

## Independent examiner's report to the trustees of Calderdale Valley of Sanctuary
I report to the charity trustees on my examination of the accounts of the CIO for the period 2 February 2022 to 31 March 2023, which are set out on pages 6 to 9.
## **Responsibilities and basis of report**
As the charity trustees of the CIO you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 ('the Act').
I report in respect of my examination of the CIO's accounts as carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act. In carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.
## **Independent examiner's statement**
I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:
1 accounting records were not kept in respect of the charity as required by section 130 of the Charities Act; 2 the accounts do not accord with those records.
I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

## **1 Accounting policies**
## **Basis of accounting**
The trustees have taken advantage of section 133 of the Charities Act 2011 and have prepared the accounts on a receipts and payments basis.
These accounts have been prepared for the period from 2 February 2022 to 31 March 2023
## **Taxation**
As a charity the organisation benefits from rates relief and is generally exempt from income tax and capital gains tax but not from VAT. Irrecoverable VAT is included in the cost of those items to which it relates.
## **Fund accounting**
Unrestricted funds are available for use at the discretion of the trustees in furtherance of the general objectives of the charity.
Restricted funds are subjected to restrictions on their expenditure imposed by the donor or through the terms of an appeal.
Further explanation of the nature and purpose of each fund is included in the notes to the accounts.
