Address: c/o Shirehall, 32 Market Avenue, Norwich, Norfolk NR1 3JQ

The C&TA was founded in 1989 as a registered charity, No. 1000730, and became a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO), No. 1197727 on 31.01.2022

A committee of Trustees manage the affairs of the C&TA and may for that purpose exercise all the powers of the C&TA.

The accounts date from 01.01.2022, when the organisation was still a registered charity, and continue from February as a CIO.

The Objects of the C&TA are:

To advance the education of the public in the history and development of costumes and textiles and the history and development of the costume and textiles industries and trades in Norfolk and Norwich, in particular but not exclusively through:

a) the provision of public events, talks, displays and activities which promote a greater understanding of the history and manufacture of costumes and textiles in general;

b) the provision of financial and other assistance to support the presentation and development of the Norfolk Museums Service's costume and textile collection;

c) the promotion of research, the useful results of which will be published for the public benefit;

d) the award of bursaries, prizes and grants to support students of textiles and fashion.

Over the last three decades The Costume and Textile Association members have contributed more than £120,000 to enable the Norfolk Museums Service to extend and improve its extensive costume and textile collection and to encourage scholarly research.

Achievements in 2022

Membership

Membership of the C&TA is open to any individual who is interested in furthering its purposes. Online only memberships are available for those living in other parts of the UK and overseas.

Structure and governance management

The Trustees shall manage the affairs of the C&TA and may for that purpose exercise all the powers of the C&TA. It is the duty of each Trustee:

to exercise his or her powers and to perform his or her functions as a Trustee in the way he or she decide in good faith would be most likely to further the purposes of the C&TA; and

to exercise, in the performance of those functions, such care and skill as is reasonable in the circumstances having regard in particular to any special knowledge or experience that he or she has or holds himself or herself as having.

The Trustees of the C&TA as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation are:

Joy Evitt Chair and membership secretary
Pippa Lacey Vice chair, online events, social media.
Pauline White Secretary, Data Protection
Celia Sutton Treasurer
Stephen Worth Artistic director
Barbara Coe Events and Volunteer co-ordinator
Mandy Jackson Events
Prue Smith Online Events
Caroline Whiting Website, Publicity
Deirdre Bailey Product Sales

The C&TA run a wide range of Costume and Textile related events, both in person and online, for members to enjoy. From ticket sales money is raised primarily to support the work of the Norfolk Museum Service (NMS). Fund raising is entirely reliant on membership fees and on members and the wider public attending events, talks and displays. Also from sales of C&TA books and publications, available for sale on the website and at events.

C&TA have a varied resource costume and textile collection that is used for fashion shows, to enhance displays and to stimulate interest.

During the recent Pandemic when the income stream was severely compromised, the online events programme was devised to keep members in touch, and for them to have events to look forward to with like minded people.

The Afternoon Chat events were particularly beneficial to those members living alone, at a time when we were not allowed to meet in person. They proved so successful that we have continued them.

The C&TA trustees have a wide range of abilities, skills and interests to draw on when devising the programmes of events. The trustees receive no remuneration for their tireless efforts, apart from expenses.

The C&TA works closely with NMS disseminating news and collaborating on some events for members. The list of donations since C&TA’s inception are available on the website: https://www.ctacostume.org.uk/donations.html

Financial Review

During a recent financial review over the Covid period, the C&TA trustees agreed to move some funds from the investment account, to cover shortfalls in income:

CCLA Investment Management Ltd: CCLA is the UK’s largest charity fund manager

COIF Charities Investment Fund: A long-term, sustainable investment solution which incorporates environmental, social and governance (ESG) considerations into the investment strategy. Suitable for all charities looking for a good level of distributions and protection from inflation. The fund aims to provide a long-term total return comprising growth in capital and distributions.

As part of the accounts held by the C&TA, we have certain sums reserved for specific purposes:

Geoffrey Squire Bursary, held bi-annually The Bellerophon tapestry: a NMS treasure that needs restoration

Clabburn fund: given by the family in the name of the C&TA’s founder, to engage eminent speakers for events

The Future

The C&TA will continue to support NMS in their aims and ambitions

The C&TA will continue to support the Fashion and the Textile students at Norwich University of the Arts (NUA), through the C&TA student award and the Helen Hoyte student award, also by giving talks and demonstrations.

The C&TA will try to engage with members and the wider community as widely as possible bringing Costume and Textiles to the fore.
