– - Group Scout Leader Report 2022 23
I am delighted to welcome you all here today. Our group continues to grow from strength to strength with high numbers in all sections and many fantastic activities both in the hall and outside it. Our newest section Squirrels have thrived with many squirrel parents joining as new leaders - Welcome to you all.
Following this you will hear all about the activities all the sections have been involved in over the past year. They have been very busy with 1989 badges awarded to our young people from 1/9/22 - 31/8/23!
I would like to welcome the member(s) of Plymouth District who are attending this meeting, and take the opportunity to thank them and the District as a whole, for all the help they have given our group over the past year.
I would also like to say a special thank you to all the leaders for all their hard work putting on amazing programs for our young people. I want to especially thank Chris and John for supporting me when I was away over the Summer.
The young people are the key to the group. I would like to thank all the squirrels, beavers, cubs, scouts and explorers for attending both weekly sessions and the other activities and camps we put on. You are the reason we have this group, and you are the reason why we want to make scouting a positive experience for you. I also need to thank all the parents and carers for all your support.
We would like to take this opportunity to ask our parents if they would be able to help us. We are very lucky to have our own hall and land, but this takes time to look after. We are planning to have a regular work afternoon on the first Sunday of every month from 1pm to 3pm. This would involve general tidying up of the hall and the grounds, but will also include jobs such as installing the plastic roof of the master of arms area, touching up the paint within the hall etc. We would be very grateful if any parents/friends/supporters of 1st Keyham would be able to help on these afternoons - Many hands make light work - The first afternoon is planned for Sunday 1st October, there will be further details on our Facebook page.
Thank you all for your support this year as we look forward to another successful year at 1st Keyham.
Fiona Crossland - GSL

Beavers AGM report 2023
Hello all, it has been another action-packed year since we were last here. There has been no end of fun, activities and learning. In the last 12 months our beavers have earned in total 552 badges. Here is a range of activities that we have been up to. We have done science experiments, learning various skills using footballs, we have done work around digital maker, we have learned about international scouting which connected to JOTI, alongside this the beavers got to taste various foods from different parts of the world.
As the darker nights drew in we focused on space and looked at constellations and learned about bonfire night. The beavers learned some songs and made decorations ready for the Christmas tree festival and we ended the year with a Christmas party. The new year saw us return with archery as our first session. We have done the builder badge (which seems to be a favourite one amongst many of our beavers).
We did some work around Chinese new year and Shrove Tuesday where we made pancakes. Also we looked and learned about American independence day. As spring arrived we did our gardeners badge, litter picking and discussions around conservation. Another favourite activity is the flying angels and nerf guns which we fit into our programme when we can.
We have covered lots on our safety badge over the last 12 months such as water, road, rail and safety in the home. This involved various guests coming in to do talks and demonstrations. We also had a visitor from HSBC bank to do money skills.
With having a new king this year, we have done some activities about the royal family and had a coronation picnic activity day where we dressed up. This was great fun even the adults joined in.
As the weather warmed up we got outside more and did our cyclist badge, fire lighting, pioneering and various sporting activities. We have done work around disability awareness.
Some trips and offsite activities we have done over the past year have included mount Edgecombe, Devonport dome, Emmanuel church for bell ringing, ham woods, ernesettle woods for some pond dipping and bug hunts, and paddle sports at tinside lido. We have also had various camps which have been great fun.
Some events we have done include St Georges day, District Beaver activity day, Remembrance day.
We have a fun filled programme starting to take shape already with lots of activities planned and a few visits and visitors coming.
Finally, I would like to thank my team Nikki, Kiera, Liam, Caroline, Cordelia, and Shane. Also, a mention to Chris who has been helping with the planning and running of beavers too. A huge thanks also goes to our amazing young leaders Katie and Freya who are very much part of our team. Also thank you to some leaders from other sections who have stepped in to help us on section nights, trips and camps when needed.

‘Bears’ Cub Pack Report for 2022-23
This year's report could really be summed up in three short phrases "We did lots of Scouty Stuff" "The Cubs enjoyed themselves" and "Our Numbers are Up" think that pretty much covers it!
But, for those that like a little more detail: Our Numbers are now up to 21 with 2 more due next week, so that's excellent news and, just as good, we have seen the return of Amy to Scouting who has now joined us as our Young Leader 'Nkima' and has already proven to be a great asset to the Pack and a very firm favouritewith the Cubs. Over this year the Cubs have earned loads of Badges (196 including 2 x Silvers - well done Rhys and Flynn) and taken part in all sorts of activities and events, some of which have been:
Shooting (twice), Internet Safety, 10 minute Challenges, Remembrance Parade at Devonport Park, an Orienteering Incident Hike at Saltram House where as they got to each point they had to deal with an incident, anything from First Aid to Person Rescue, Nuclear Bucket to Compass Work Etc.
They've done Curling, Stilt Walking, Halloween Party and Parliament Week, Archery (3times), Panto at St. Bartholomew's, Keyham Nature Day at the Hall, Christmas Cards and Letters to a Cub Pack in the Falkland Islands (unfortunately we never received anything back). They've had Adventure Golf, Karting, Hand Chimes and 3 x Silly Games Nights. Naturalist, Road Safety and Emergency Aid. Saint David and the Patron Saints, Artist, Laser Tag, Bouldering, World Challenge Award, Navigator Stages 2 and 3 and a visit to the National Marine Park and National Aquarium.
There's been Bug Hotels, Ident Charts, Seed Sowing, Insect Surveys Etc. All with Green Minds. Jungle Dances, Country Code, Twangers, Disability Awareness, Team Building, Practical Leadership Tasks and Challenges, Climbing Wall, an Activity Day at The Scout Hut that included building Giant Twangers, Light Fires, Cook Lunch, Eat, Wash Up, Silly Games and Build a Seesaw - a little wobbly but it worked.
Oh, and we had Camps at Gilwood in April and Oakmead in August where they did loads of stuff and had loads and loads of fun, especially the Slack Line across the River.
So, massive thanks to Nushka, Bagheera and Nkima, without you we couldn't put on anywhere near the Programme that we do. Also many thanks to the Group Leaders and Exec and, most importantly, to the Parents (without your support we wouldn't have any Cubs) and to The Cubs themselves - as always you've been great and, without you, there'd be no 'Bears'
Many Thanks Baloo and Chil

Cubs “Eagles” Report 2023
We have had yet another busy year, with 30 Cubs on the books. During the last year the Cubs have taken part in many activities, these include (but not limited to!); a visit to a reptile shop, the Climbing Hangar, Ham Woods, a night at the 360 Dome, Parliament Week, Archery, Making Paper, Fire Lighting, Fencing, First Aid, Pioneering, and much much more. We also took part in the Remembrance Day Parade at Devonport Park, JOTI, St Georges Day and Tug Of War.
We have had 2 camps so far this year, a May camp with 21 Cubs where they planned then bought food for a 2 course meal and cooked over fires. We also had a Medieval themed Summer Camp at Glen Holt with 20 Cubs, with a day trip to the Maize Maze in Cornwall. A BIG thankyou to all the leaders who were able to help on this camp, it would not have been possible without your help!
During the last year we the Cubs have earned just over 500 badges, including 7 Chief Scout Silver awards, the highest award a Cub can earn. Some of the badges they have earned include; Teamwork and Team Leader Challenge awards, Backwards Cooking, Book Reader, Chef, Global Issues, Money Skills, Photographer, Hobbies, Pioneer, Scientist, Community Impact, Lead Plan and Represent YouShape awards, and many many more.
As always we would not be able to run an exciting program without the support and encouragement of the group leadership team, all the leaders who help us run activities during the year, the parents and especially the Cubs who come back week after week.

Scouts Section Report 2022-23
Our numbers have increased by about 1/3 over the past 12 months with Monday nights now pretty much at capacity at 25 young people.
This year the Scouts have taken part in lots of active pursuits. We’ve been Ice Skating, climbing at the Climbing Hangar, taken part in Dungeons and Dragons sessions as well as watching a local pantomime.
Some of our Scouts participated in the Keyham Nature Day which was organised to showcase our role in the rewilding of Keyham. If you visit the 360 Dome at Devonport Market Hall, you will see the film that was produced with our young people who contributed in their own words.
Other activities have included Navigation, with plenty of hikes and local walks to practice our skills. Water Activities which are still ongoing, a visit to the aquarium and most recently the Cardboard Boat Race on the Barbican which is always lots of fun.
We’ve had a busy camping year. Winter Camp at Dewerstone where we enjoyed a Viking Feast, Easter Camp at Blind Man’s Wood, May Camp at Callisham and our Medieval Summer Camp at Glenholt.
All of this is in addition to our regular weekly program. We continue to be impressed by the commitment of the young people (supported by you) in attending events and other activities, in fact the Scouts have earned a massive 424 badges this year between them, which is up by nearly 20% on last year. Well done to you all.
We don’t just do Monday and Friday nights at Keyham you know!
Aside from the above, our hall-based badgework this year has included Emergency Aid, Model Making in the form of Pinewood Derby cars, Archery, Air Rifle Shooting, Throwing Angels and Fencing. We’ve been cooking on fires and building huge structures using our new Pioneering poles, during which we worked on our knots and lashings. We’ve been orienteering, working on promoting Scouting locally and having conversations with local counsellors and police officers to see how we can best contribute to our local community.
We’ve continued to notice the effects of COVID and lockdown in our Scouts this year. The gaps in social development and confidence are evident, as is their general resilience to challenges. They have had a lot to deal with over the past few years, and we continue to support them in every way we can.
The leadership team has grown again this year, increasing the breadth of skills we are able to share with our young people. I would like to thank all our volunteers for their continued hard work and commitment over the past year.
If anyone else has ever thought about having a go, and joining us on some of our adventures, please come and see me at the end and we can have a chat.

Treasurer's Report
We have had another busy year, with many activities and camps.
This year 1stKeyham made an overall loss of just £1,164.
The funds received from parents contribution, gift aid, grants, fundraising and camps and activities, total of £27,810
were not enough to cover the total expenses of £28,973. The funds received from parents, including the gift aid, were not enough to cover the membership fees and running costs, which is where the loss comes from. However, the grants we have from previous years gave us the cover needed.
On 31 March we had a healthy £25,292 total funds available.
We are grateful to the parents and guardians for their continuous support and we are looking forward to offering your children the best we have. Thank you.
