Annual Report for Climate Action Hub Telford for the period April 2024- April 2025
Climate Action Hub Telford
Registered Charity Number: 1197678
Address: 18 Little Meadow Close, Admaston, Telford Shropshire TF5 0DN
Charity Objectives
The object of the CIO is the advancement of environmental protection or improvement. Specifically:
-
For the benefit of the public in the Telford and Wrekin area the advancement of
-
environmental protection, in particular, but not exclusively by the promotion of waste reduction, re-use, repair, recycling, use of recycled products and the use of surplus.
-
To advance the education of the public about sustainable waste management and reducing their consumption of waste by working with other groups to provide education, advice and support about climate and ecological issues .
Governance
The charity is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) governed by a constitution based on the ‘Foundation’ model and dated 19th December 2022 . We do not have any members. The only people able to make decisions about the charity are the trustees.
During the reporting period April 2024-April 2025 the trustees decided after July 2024 to no longer hold monthly public meetings via Zoom, the link to which was sent out to everyone on our mailing list in our newsletter (approx 200+ people). Minutes were taken of these meetings. Very few people outside of the trustees joined these meetings. It was felt to be more time effective to retain our monthly trustee meetings only where all topics could be discussed.
During this period trustee meetings were held once a month /every 6 weeks where the charity business is discussed including finances, recruitment of trustees and volunteers, communications and admin (including GDPR and IT issues), training and policy needs, services CAHT provides or intends to provide. Minutes are taken of these meetings.
Trustees
The charity’s constitution allows it to have at least three charity trustees. There is no maximum number of charity trustees that may be appointed. The Appointed Trustees named in the Constitution can appoint a further 3 nominated trustees. 3 of the original appointed Trustees could serve a 2 year term with one appointed trustee serving a 4 year term. Nominated Trustees serve two year terms. Any charity trustee who has served for two consecutive terms may not be reappointed for a third consecutive term but may be reappointed after an interval of at least one year.
Charity’s Trustees during the period of this report remained unchanged
At the end of the reporting period (April 2025) the Trustees were as follows:
Appointed Trustees:
Juliet Soria (Chair) in 3rd year of 4 year term. First Term due to end after 4 years 3/12/25 at which point can be reappointed for another 4 year term.
Fiona Morgan (Secretary) Reappointed Trustee on 3/12/23 for another 2 year term at which point will need to stand down for a minimum of one year.
Jane Bundy (Treasurer) Reappointed Trustee on 3/12/23 for another 2 year term at which point will need to stand down for a minimum of one year.
Nominated Trustees
Elizabeth Pinfield Wells. First term ended after 2 years on 4/1/25. Was reappointed for another 2 year term which is due to end on 4/1/27.
Ongoing attempts were made during 2025 to recruit more trustees due to 2 trustee’s terms coming to an end in the next reporting period (December 2025) and needing to be replaced to avoid the charity no longer being constitutionally viable. This included existing trustees approaching potential candidates already known to them and via an online advert placed via NCVO on Trustees Unlimited website in August- September 2023 and a form on our website. This has not yet been successful and would continue into the next reporting period.
Volunteers
Over time we recruited volunteers to support us at our Sustainable Sunday events in 2024 and Sustainable Saturday events in 2025. Most of them are known to the Trustees already or via known connections. By April 2025 we had 13 volunteers who had supported us at least one of our events during the reporting period (doing washing up, assisting with serving, clearing dishes, assisting with setting up or putting away at the beginning and end of the event, assisting with managing the swap and eco library). Some other people completed a volunteer form but never attended an event (their details are deleted after a year). Volunteers complete a basic details form with emergency contact details. With their consent we add them to our volunteer WhatsApp group where volunteers are provided with details about the upcoming events and asked who can help at the event. This was set up to facilitate communication as people were not responding to emails.
Financial review
The Charity’s main income comes from:
-
donations from our own events e.g. Sustainable Sundays (2024) and Sustainable Saturdays (2025);
-
donations from events we attend as stall holders organised by other organisations (e.g. Repair, Reuse, Recycle events held in partnership with Telford Repair Cafe up until October 2024)
-
Donations and fundraisers from groups we have provided talks/activities to (e.g. Landau);
-
Donations from Connected Mobile to thank us for collecting old mobiles which are given to them to reuse/repair.
-
The Telford and Wrekin Council Climate Change grant that was successfully applied for in December 2022 to be spent over 12 months for the purposes of setting up a physical hub. Due to experienced challenges with achieving this during 2023 it was agreed with Telford
and Wrekin Council Sustainability Team (who manage the grant scheme) during autumn 2023 that we could amend the use of the grant to providing monthly Sustainable Sunday events in a community centre in Wellington for as long as the monies would last. This enabled us to fund our monthly Sustainable Sunday events throughout 2024 and our bimonthly Sustainable Saturday events throughout 2025.
- Payments are also received from items donated at our events which are subsequently sent off to Terracycle recycling, Recycling for Good Causes, Empties Please, and Ziffit (the trading arm of World of Books a UK based B Corp company who reuse books, CDs and DVDs).
See financial report for April 2024-April 2025 for full details.
Achievements
-
During the reporting period in 2024, CAHT continued to provide a minimum of one event a month (Sustainable Sundays at Belmont Hall) to the residents of Telford and Wrekin which are consistent with our charitable objectives, and often attended the monthly Telford Repair Cafes to provide a swap and reuse opportunity at these events (up to October 2024) and Transition Telford’s Grow Local event (May 2024).
-
During the reporting period in 2025 in order to make our workload more manageable, the trustees decided to reduce the offer to a Sustainable Saturday once every other month at Belmont Hall. We no longer attended the Telford Repair Cafe to provide a swap.
-
Our events at Belmont Hall are thematic e.g. gardening, fashion, food, energy, Sustainable Christmas etc. We invited local groups to participate and provide activities/ advice/ information according to the events’ themes. All events include a swap and giveaway, eco library (where people can borrow books on climate and environmental issues), plant based food and drink options (pay as you can), recycling facilities including Terracycle, Recycling for Good Causes who take stamps, jewellery, foreign currency etc, and Connected Mobile for whom we collect phones for them to reuse and recycle, leaflets of local groups engaged in environmental /sustainability initiatives. At all our events we discuss the purpose of reusing things with the public to reduce carbon emissions, save waste from going to landfill/incineration and help us to share resources.
-
The events are held in one location: Belmont Hall which is central to Wellington, 5 minutes walk from the bus station and train station, next to a well used public car park with passing footfall heading to and from the town. The location has enabled us to attract new people to our events and break out beyond our regular attendees. At the events we tally the weight of items donated, and count the number of items taken to provide an indication of the amount of waste saved from landfill/rehomed. The plant based refreshments including hot and cold lunch options has encouraged people to attend and stay for longer. The cafe area became a place which facilitated social connections particularly for people attending by themselves. It also provided a learning experience about plant based food and alternatives which some people had not tried before. We have created recipe sheets for some of our favourite dishes which are available as flyers and on the website.
-
We organised the Wellington Green Festival in August 2024 which was funded by Wellington Town Council and sponsored a film at Wellington Orbit on the same day.
-
We continued to provide talks where requested from other local groups e.g. Landau which is an alternative provision for young people
Details of all our activities are presented on our website under the events and gallery pages. https://climateactionhub.org.uk/
During the reporting period we sent out a newsletter once a month in 2024 reducing to approx. 6-8 weeks in 2025 via our mailing list of over 200+ people to notify them about our events and other eco and climate related events and opportunities happening locally that the readership may be interested in. We also advertise our events and photos of the event afterwards to social media (Facebook/Instagram).
