Trustees’ Annual Report 2023:
Throughout the financial year, Stoke Hindu Samajam (SHS) has been dedicated to fostering community spirit, preserving cultural heritage, and providing support to those in need. Our activities for the year are detailed below:
Vishu Celebration (16/04/2023):
SHS hosted the Vishu celebration, a significant harvest festival in South India, on 14th April 2022. The event was widely promoted through social media, and approximately 80 participants joined us. During the celebration, children had the opportunity to learn and perform various cultural and classical programmes, showcasing their newly acquired talents. To encourage and recognise their efforts, awards and trophies were presented to the participating children.
Educational Classes for Children:
SHS continued to offer educational classes for children, focusing on Indian regional languages, cultural music, dance, and Hindu Dharma. These classes aim to preserve and pass on our rich cultural heritage to the next generation.
School Outreach Programmes:
Our volunteers have been actively visiting local schools upon request to teach Hinduism as part of the school curriculum. This initiative helps promote understanding and appreciation of Hindu culture and beliefs among young students.
Chenda Classes and Performances:
SHS has been organising regular classes for those interested in learning the "Chenda" (a traditional Indian drum). These sessions have been enjoyed by both adults and children alike. A notable highlight was the SHS "Chenda Melam" performance during the Diwali Celebration at the Potteries, an event supported by Stoke-on-Trent Council.
Collaboration with Other Charities:
SHS has collaborated with various charity organisations to support vulnerable adults and children in our community. We have provided free cooked meals on several occasions, ensuring that those in need receive care and assistance.
Onam Celebration:
Onam, a significant festival celebrated by the Malayali community, is an especially joyous time for SHS. The festival marks a time for family gatherings, and SHS organises traditional festivities that include a grand feast known as "Onasadya." This celebration not only brings families together but also provides an opportunity for our community members to share the joy of the festival, reinforcing our cultural ties and fostering a sense of belonging.
In summary, SHS remains committed to promoting cultural awareness, supporting educational initiatives, and extending a helping hand to those in need. We look forward to continuing our work in the community in the coming year.
