SUMMARY OF ACTIVITIES:
The group started in September 2021 with significant interest and attendance of about 25 men and guests including the social prescriber from Grange Road Surgery , the leader of Keighley Men's Shed and our facilitator from Community First Yorkshire The group met in the Bowling pavilion with kind permission of the Bowling Club.
The decision was made to meet every first and third Wednesday of each month in the Bowling Pavilion between 10am and 12noon. Refreshments (bacon Butty/coffee) have been provided to encourage membership.
It was agreed that the group should become a Charity (Charitable Incorporated Organisation), a Constitution created and national Men's Shed membership obtained. These were all achieved with the help of our enthusiastic Secretary Bernie Poulter by early December 2021. Three Trustees were appointed to the Charity, Duncan Ault, Bernie Poulter and Richard Kendall. Unfortunately Bernie moved away from Burley in January 2022 and we currently only have 2 active Trustees.
The twice monthly meetings have continued every month (except August) with a core group of about 15 members. There have been a wide variety of activities during that time including visits to other Sheds in Keighley and Pateley Bridge, speakers from other Sheds (Otley, Harrogate, Keighley), visits to the Industrial Museum, Greenholme Mills, Woodturners, Jake Wright, village walks in the village and to Bleach Mill, Unusual objects and Bowls at the pavilion.
We have a web site, logo, regular online communication (thank you Harvey) and have received funding from a number of sources including Shipley Community Chest, Community First Yorkshire, Burley O50 Club, and the Community Foundation Leeds.
We have also submitted a pre planning application to Bradford MDC to build a Men's Shed at the back of the Library in Grange Park. The response from Bradford has been mixed but not negative. There is some more work to be done on this to try and obtain planning permission but thanks go to Stephen Carruthers and to Phil Wright for getting us this far. . page 1

TRUSTEES REPORT
30TH NOVEMBER 2022
THE FUTURE:
The Burley Men's Shed has now been in existence for 14 months with a variety of activities and funding from various sources and a regular attendance of about 15.
We have had considerable help from Community First and Andy Ryland but we now need to make a few decisions for the future:
These are:
-
We need at least 4 Trustees of the Shed. We cannot continue with just 2.
-
We need a Secretary and a Social Secretary (neither is too onerous).
-
Ideas for meetings.
-
We need to establish a funding stream from membership with an annual subscription of say £15/£20. We may also have to charge for the refreshments
-
(£1 coffee, £3 bacon butty and coffee)
-
We need to decide on the plan to build a Men's Shed separate from the Bowling club. Do we want to keep the Shed as a meeting place for discussion and companionship or to expand into more practical activities with a building of our own.
-
We have found out from other Sheds that it takes time to establish a Men's Shed with its own premises and practical facilities. There are few empty premises in Burley at this time and little prospect in the future. Building our own is the only real option if we want the practical option.
