The objects of the CIO are to advance in life and help young people through the provision of support and activities which develop their skills, capacities and capabilities to enable them to participate in society as independent and responsible individuals by all charitable means according to the laws of England and Wales, including without limitation by providing young people with work placements and professional mentoring opportunities.

netWork carries out its purposes by providing motivating, high quality work experience placements and career/ business speakers to students at state schools and sixth-form colleges which have higher than national average disadvantaged pupils (as measured by the school’s Pupil Premium). netWork delivers a free, practical service to support students regarding their career and higher education skills and capabilities and advance their work life opportunities by seeking out and setting up work experience and specialist speakers. Delivering this service requires netWork to work with schools and business supporters to establish and develop relevant work placements and speakers/ mentors. To ensure netWork’s purposes are met, we also advise and support the students and business hosts and monitor and evaluate the delivery of that work experience or speaker contribution.

We declare that all charity trustees have regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit.

Section D Achievements and performance

Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year

During the last year, whilst considering the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit, netWork has placed 12 students in a variety of businesses including advertising, insurance, journalism and physiotherapy. As a direct result of connecting these young people with companies, we have both improved the students’ employment prospects and assisted the organisations’ diverse recruitment programme.

The feedback we have received from students has demonstrated that the work placements have broadened their understanding and experience of the workplace. One student wrote “being able to learn in an office setting gave me a sense of what it’s like to work in a professional work environment, which was incredibly useful in deciding what I want to do in the future”.

The arranged placements have introduced students to areas of work they have had no prior knowledge of and expanded their horizons as to future career choices. On the back of her placement at an insurance company, one student who had been considering a career in banking, has made the decision to pursue a career in insurance. She went on to do a second virtual work experience in the insurance industry and make applications for apprenticeships.

The placements have also improved students’ performances at their schools/ colleges. A member of staff reported that participation in the work placement arranged for one of his students, had significantly improved his academic approach and commitment.

The success of the placements has been reflected in encouraging feedback from both students and organisations. Students have received individual praise from their mentors. One mentor wrote of his student “he really broke the mould for me and the wider team and I can categorically say he was the best student we’ve seen”. A student from an advertising work placement was so highly praised that she was offered a job once she has completed her tertiary education.

In the last year, we have expanded the number of state schools/ colleges we work with and continued our work with existing schools, developing and expanding the scope of our work with them. As well as continuing to arrange work placements for their students, netWork has worked closely with schools on their careers’ programmes and introduced them to areas of industry they are not familiar with through presentations at internal career events.

In summary, netWork has opened the workplace environment for a number of young people who are now more confident and able to work through their career options whilst simultaneously raising the bar of their own expectations.
