REVIEW OF DEVELOPMENTS, ACTIVITIES AND ACHIEVEMENTS
January 13 - October 31 2022 was our first reporting period year as a charity as we welcomed onboard our new charity status and board members.
Workshops
In 2022, we ran 255 workshops throughout the year. These ranged from evening online workshops to the slow reintroduction of in-person workshops after omicron in Jan/Feb. This was our highest number of workshops in a year ever - an increase of 6% from 2021.
Our workshop database of actors grew from 2021 in 2022 by 24% .x
Scholarship
In December 2022 we celebrated our 4th annual scholarship for working class actors at university or drama school (2nd year). The eventual winner, Sol Taibi (Bristol Old Vic Theatre School) has already had meetings with top agents and casting directors.
229 actors applied for the 2022 scholarship, up 14% from 2021. We reached 24 schools across the UK, up 6% on 2021.
We have regular contacts with our previous winners, all who have had very successful years, including:
Madison Stock (2019, ALRA)
- booked feature film opposite Kit Connor ( Heartstopper ).
Ayomdie Adegun (2020, Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama)
- claimed his first major on-screen role in the John Wick spin-off, The Continental. He has shot a supporting role in The Hunger Games prequel, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.
Melodie Karczewski (2021, Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama)
- Signed to Curtis Brown, one of the biggest agencies in the UK and world.
Commissions
In 2020, we commissioned writer Gareth Farr to write a play about food banks and food poverty in the South West. Just over 3 years on, we open that play at Hampstead Theatre this May (2023) - Biscuits For Breakfast .
We have commissioned the writer Simon Vinnicombe to write our next play for 2024.
Education
The education arm grew considerably in 2022, allowing us to formalise two new partnerships:
Lyric Hammersmith Theatre
- We will deliver 6 workshops annually to their Springboard Programme to help them develop their industry skills - such as writing to an agent, producing and writing funding bids. In return, Lyric Hammersmith will host our annual scholarship in-kind.
South Essex University
- We have just delivered a programme of 4 workshops aimed at jump-starting their career upon graduating. These are students from very low socio-economic backgrounds. Workshops including a casting Q&A, how to become an actor-producer and approaching an agent.
Fundraising
The charity received public donation from multiple sources including:
-
A bucket collection at the Harold Pinter Theatre in the West End
-
A donation from the Mazars Charitable Trust
-
A donation from the Beaverbrook Foundation
-
Donations from Applause For Thought and Foundry Personal Management
