## **Trustees** 

The charity is administered by the trustees. The following persons served throughout the year and since the year end.

Each trustee must be appointed for a term of three years by a resolution passed at a properly convened meeting of the charity trustees. In selecting individuals for appointment as charity trustees, the existing charity trustees must have regard to the skills, knowledge and experience required for the effective administration of Do SlumThing. 

## **Charitable Purposes** 

Do SlumThing was formed to fulfil the following objectives: 

To provide financial support for schools and individual past and present students in slum communities in India and elsewhere for the prevention or relief of poverty or financial hardship and to enable individuals to generate a sustainable income and be self-sufficient. 

## **Structure, Governance and Management** 

The charity is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) registered on 13 January 2022 and subject to a Constitution.

The charity is supervised by the trustees who meet as required but at least quarterly. All of the work of the charity is done on a voluntary basis by the trustees. 

All our Trustees are unpaid volunteers and none are reimbursed their travel or other expenses. 

## **Risk Assessment** 

The trustees have assessed the major risks to which the Charity is exposed, in particular those relating to its operations and finances, and are satisfied that systems are in place to mitigate the charity’s exposure to the major risks. 

## **Review of the Activities and Achievements** 

Do SlumThing was only formed in January 2022 and with a very modest agenda namely to provide a basic salary for one dedicated individual - Shahadat Ali - who’d taught kids in various Jaipur slums for a decade without pay. Any surplus to be used for school equipment and support of unpaid volunteers from abroad. 

To date we’ve had just the one major fundraising exercise; August 2022 Jamie Collins and his girlfriend Robyn did a sponsored bike ride around Scotland and I wrote 20 letters to friends and family. 

The response was quite simply overwhelming. Our initial target was £2,500 yet we received more than double this amount in the last quarter of 2022 and in excess of £42,000 in 2023 largely thanks to the support of two generous corporate sponsors: Gunner & Co in Bristol and SMBC Aviation Capital in Dublin. 

This is not to downplay the contributions of friends, family and other charitable individuals with special thanks to those who donate by monthly standing order. These are: 

John Brandon-Joyce Camilla Gower Mike Hendry Julia Hendry Steve and Jane Horton Alan Millichamp Edward Rye 

The trustees themselves personally donated £1,236. 

I would also like to thank: 

1. my accountants Brebners for agreeing to carry out an independent examination of this and future years’ accounts on a pro bono basis. 

2. Sam Bryan who - at no charge - created and updates our website. 

3. Beatrice, Melanie, Alex, Vicky and Asia - all volunteers who helped teach Oct-Nov despite the fact that we’ve not even launched our volunteer recruitment drive yet. 

Indian law prohibits foreign individuals or entities from owning property in India and only a small percentage of Indian NGOs are authorised to receive foreign aid so we’ve formed a strategic alliance with Lok Seva Sangam (“LSS”) in Mumbai. I’d volunteered there in 2018. 

We donated £9,748 - so that LSS could purchase a property in Harmada where previously our children had been taught in rented rooms or the open air. 

The trustees are confident that we have complied with the duty in section 4 of the Charities Act 2006 to have due regard to guidance on public benefit published by The Charity Commission.

No sooner had we completed the purchase of one building than the even more dilapidated one next door became available at a knockdown price. The seller needed cash urgently to fund his sister’s wedding. 

This purchase was completed on 27 December at an overall cost of just £3,000. 

Neither building is in a habitable state at the moment so teaching outside will continue for the time being. 

As yet no decision has been made as to how best develop these two plots. 

Since July 2023 we’ve sponsored (via LSS) Rachel as a full-time volunteer teacher and education program coordinator in Jaipur. 


Rachel has a BA in English Literature from University of Sheffield, a Masters in Social Work from Tata Institute of Social Services in Mumbai and speaks Hindi. 

Aside from Shahadat, we have 3-4 part-time teaching assistants including Shahadat’s wife Usha, Tarannum and Manisha and are seeking to recruit a 2nd qualified full-time teacher. 

We currently support the education and welfare of 150 children and counting across 4 separate locations. Below is Rachel’s description (with minor updates): 

_There are four main areas for teaching included in the Jaipur Education Project._ 

_This includes the Parva School, which is in Vidyadhar Nagar and was set up in 2010. This school is situated in a small chawl that is situated around a Municipal garbage dump, where local people work. The school here is a structure constructed with the help of the local community._ 

_The second area of teaching is the two groups of children taught within the Zindagi Foundation, located further out of the city, in Harmada. Teaching here began in 2020. This locality resembles a village-style settlement, offering only limited amenities nearby, partly due to its considerable distance from the city. Here, children are taught in two groups, on opposite sides of the settlement. There is no school building structure, but a room is rented on one side of the settlement for two hours and the other group of children are taught outside on different pieces of land, according to vacancy. We have_

_recently purchased a building in this area which we are going to renovate into a school to teach both groups of children from this area._ 

_The final area of teaching takes place under a flyover bridge, in the centre of Jaipur. The conditions in this area are particularly poor, with extremely low levels of sanitation and hygiene. The houses in this area are made from bamboo and iron sheets and many are without roofs. The teaching here is now done in a similar bamboo/iron structure. This area does not have electricity connection._

We allocate £300 monthly for the daily distribution of fruit and the twice or thrice-weekly provision of milk or boiled eggs for all our students. 

We fund periodic visits by teams of doctors and/or opticians. 

For those who graduate from any of our four schools and wish to study further, we provide bursaries for private school and/or college tuition, books and uniforms. We currently support 3 such graduates and another 3 current students who also attend a Football Academy. 

We monitor the attendance and progress of each and every child in our care; we know their family backgrounds; we get them medical treatment when they’re sick or injured; we intervene in cases of domestic violence. 

We are not like other local charities that make the occasional trip to the slums to distribute food and second hand clothing. We are there six days a week, 52 weeks a year. 

## **Outlook** 

To the original 3 Founding Trustees we’ve added 4 more including representatives of both corporate sponsors and a former director of another charity SlumAid. 

We’ve expanded our horizons. Over the next 12 months we hope to: 

1. institute English-style lesson plans and a syllabus focussed on mastering written and spoken English 

2. create and support a steady flow of both foreign and local volunteers to supplement the work of our teaching staff 

3. expand the Zindagi Foundation (Harmada) by either refurbishing one or both properties purchased or, alternatively, demolishing both and building an entirely new school. 

Subject to Board of Trustees approval, our long term goals include: 

4. opening a 5th school within 1-2 kms of Parva 

5. accepting children of parents living outside our designated slum areas against payment of meanstested tuition fees

## **Funds** 

The charity holds unrestricted funds applied to general purposes and also restricted funds created from specific appeals for the under noted purposes: 

Food programme - to provide fruit on a daily basis and milk or boiled eggs twice or thrice weekly to all our students 

School building - to purchase an existing albeit dilapidated building, refurbish and re-purpose same or demolish and rebuild for educational purposes 

## **Reserve Policy** 

Total reserves carried forward at 31 December 2023 amounted to £23,563 (2022 - £3,895) of which £17,985 are restricted for the purposes previously described. 

## **Investment Policy** 

Any monies in excess of a £3-5,000 current account float are held on an Easy Access Savings Account with Shawbrook Bank.

**Responsibilities and basis of report** As the CIO’s trustees, you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (“the Act”). 

I report in respect of my examination of the Trust’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination, I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act. 

**Independent** I have completed my examination.  I confirm that no material matters have **examiner's statement** come to my attention in connection with the examination which give me cause to believe that in, any material respect: 

- the accounting records were not kept in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act; or
