Chairperson’s Report

Girlguiding Saltash Districts activities are relating to Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Rangers, Young Leaders, Leaders and the Trefoil Guild. The Charity also manages the Saltash Girlguide Headquarters (pictured above). Girlguiding Saltash district leases the land and property from Cornwall Council and a 99 year lease has been secured from 9/1/2024.

Our units are for girls from age 4 years old and they all take part in lots of different activities linked to the 6 themes of our programme. The girls get to meet new friends, have adventures and fun and learn vital life skills to help them in their future lives. Some of our young people have gone on to become volunteer leaders themselves.

Membership of all sections; rainbows, brownies, guides and rangers continue to be popular with many units full and carrying waiting lists.

We fund the running of our Headquarters by charging rent to our Girlguiding units, renting the building out to other Girlguiding units for pack holidays and sleepovers, renting the property to other groups and private hire.

We have over the past year been working to complete the kitchen extension to Saltash Girlguide headquarters. This will give us, when fully complete, an inclusive, accessible kitchen for all our members and those who hire the

headquarters. It is spacious and will enable users to do so much more for catering and skills-based work. This has involved securing a number of additional grants and fundraising due to finding ourselves with a shortfall of the original planned costs in 2020, as prices increased by approximately one third following Covid and delayed its progress.

2

We have undertaken several fundraising activities over the course of the year. This has included Saltash Mayfair, where the district participated in the parade of youth and raised approximately £1000 with a BBQ, cake stall and tombola.

The rangers section had a stall at Saltash regatta raising funds towards the kitchen extension selling handmade craft items.

We were unfortunately unable to fundraise at the Christmas festival in Saltash as it was cancelled due to weather conditions. We used the chocolate tombola items donated to create small hamper baskets and created a grid map to find Rudolph and sold squares through social media platforms to fundraise.

The Guide leaders organised a Christmas raffle and tickets were sold to raise funds for the kitchen extension.

The guide leaders organised a coach trip to Cardiff for Christmas shopping as a fundraiser and sold seats.

One of the guide leaders ran the Christmas Saltash fun run and was sponsored to fundraise for the kitchen extension.

The district had a Christmas tree at the local Christmas tree festival, which is held in a local church every year. Our theme was “hands around the world” linking friendship and fun.

3

Wherever possible, relying on volunteers’ time, the district offers additional experiences and adventures for members including sleepovers and residentials throughout the year.

1st Saltash Brownies enjoyed one of the biggest Brownie adventures of a pack holiday! On the Friday they caught the train to Par for a Harry Potter themed Brownie holiday. Before going home they enjoyed a picnic breakfast on the

beach and a paddle in the sea.

The two guides units of Saltash held a camp in May at one of the Girlguiding Cornwall county campsites with an Olympic theme and enjoyed kayaking on the river.

Five rangers from Saltash District were successful in the selection process to represent Cornwall Girlguides on International adventures with southwest region including an international jamboree in Norfolk and inter-railing around Europe. Part of the experience is to fundraise for themselves to fund their place, and the rangers have all been doing various endeavours including selling badges, making crafts and holding raffles. These adventures will take place in 2025.

Overall, it has been a very productive year for Saltash District Girlguiding.
