The past 12 months have been a period of consolidation and re-focus for Building Foundations. We have continued to run regular sessions teaching carpentry and building skills to a small group of learners, making use of the workshop facilities that we have developed at The Warehouse. The majority of sessions were held weekly on a Friday, overseen by one of our regular volunteers who has been volunteering with Building Foundations for more than two years. We have continued to grow our volunteer base and have recently welcomed a number of skilled and enthusiastic volunteers to the team. We have also welcomed a new trustee to Building Foundations, who has strengthened the leadership team going forward.

Through continued discussions with our sister charity, Faith Church, we have also been able to offer a number of catering and hospitality work experience placements, within the community café located on site. The Loading Bay Café has become extremely popular, with a growing customer base and hosting various associated activities and classes, including regular ‘Parent and Toddler’ and soft play sessions. In February, the decision was taken to transfer the responsibility for running the café from Faith Church to Building Foundations, creating the opportunity to expand the number and type of placements offered in the future.

Towards the end of the year and with the support of a bolstered team of Trustees, work started on transforming the Building Foundations brand identity to reflect the evolution of the charity. This has involved moving away from a focus on the teaching of building skills, towards a wider remit of providing a range of work experience placements, as well as more formal training opportunities and ad hoc mentoring support. The Trustees have opened discussions with a number of organisations and individuals as part of an effort to expand the type of experience we can offer, as well as identifying new potential referrers of learners and reaching out to potential volunteers. We are currently developing several partnerships which will increase the work experience opportunities we will be able to offer and also provide subsidised or paid employment, making use of government schemes.

The renewed vision for Building Foundations is to maintain the weekly sessions held in the workshop and outdoor workspace and expand the number of people attending. We want to ensure the continued commercial success of The Loading Bay Café, re-investing any surplus funds to subsidise other activities carried out by the charity, including mentoring and teaching job seeking skills. It is our aim to use the cafe, our links with other organisations based in The Warehouse and new links with other employers based on the Wern Industrial Estate to

expand the number of work experience placements that we are able to offer, at the same time as engaging with new and existing referrers to identify individuals and groups who would benefit from these experiences.

We are also looking at different ways to increase funding received from sources other than the café, to ensure we continue to be financially secure. Going forward, this will involve increasing our cash reserve in line with our predicted monthly expenditure and generating surplus funds to re-invest into supporting more young people. Looking further ahead, we would also like to employ a full-time support worker, who could help us to develop the range of experiences offered by Building Foundations, as well as working directly with schools, colleges and other organisations to promote the charity to more young people.
