BRIXHAM BOWLING CLUB ANNUAL REPORT 2024

Brixham Bowling Club was founded in 1913 and was registered with the Charity Commission as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation in December 2021. Consequently, this is our third annual report for the Commission and the Financial Summary of the audited accounts for the year ending 30[th] September 2024 are attached.

As stated in our governing document the primary object of the Club is the promotion of community participation in healthy recreation for the benefit of the inhabitants of Torbay and the South Devon area by the provision of facilities for playing bowls. The Club shall be affiliated to Bowls England & Bowls Devon. It shall adopt and conform to Bowls England Rules & Regulations and the current Laws of the Sport of Bowls. The Club is committed to promoting a safe environment in which children and vulnerable adults can enjoy taking part in games of bowls.

During the year we concluded a new 40 year lease with our landlord, Torbay Council and initiated a project to improve access to the Pavilion and Bowling Green for people with disabilities.

We organised a very successful ‘try it’ day at the beginning of the new season when people of all ages were encouraged to come along and have a go at the sport with the aid and encouragement of more experienced players. A large and varied group of people enjoyed the event, 16 of whom joined us as novice members over the following few weeks.

We provide support to people who wish to become members, particularly those who have never played the game before. For those new to the sport, we offer a reduced subscription and free coaching. All new members are encouraged to take part in friendly games both between our own members and against local and touring sides. During the 2024 season, in addition to our weekly Club evenings, we organised 23 friendly matches, and 21 of our members took part in a five-day tour to Praia da Rocha in the Algarve. We were also able to run a full complement of internal club competitions.

As their confidence, and skill increases, all members can participate in league matches of varying degrees of skill level and competitiveness. During 2024 we entered teams in the Riviera Mixed Triples League (organised specifically for developing players), the Men’s Over ‘55s’ League (two teams), the Men’s Mid Devon League and the Ladies South Devon League (two teams). There was a significant increase this year of club players entering County Competitions with several members reaching the County Finals. In addition, One of our teams won the Over ‘55s’ League Championship for the fourth time in seven years.

Since 2023 we have encouraged members to participate in indoor bowling during the winter period when the green is not available. We now have 33 members actively involved.

At the end of the season, we had 96 playing members, a slight decrease of 7% on the previous season, and we look forward to an excellent season in 2025.
