BRIXHAM BOWLING CLUB ANNUAL REPORT 2022

Brixham Bowling Club was founded in 1913 and was registered with the Charity Commission as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation in December 2021. Consequently, this is our first annual report for the Commission and the Financial Summary of the audited accounts for the year ending 30[th] September 2022 are attached.

As stated in our governing document the primary object of the Club is the promotion of community participation in healthy recreation for the benefit of the inhabitants of Torbay and the South Devon area by the provision of facilities for playing bowls. The Club shall be affiliated to Bowls England & Bowls Devon. It shall adopt and conform to Bowls England Rules & Regulations and the current Laws of the Sport of Bowls. The Club is committed to promoting a safe environment in which children and vulnerable adults can enjoy taking part in games of bowls.

Like many other sporting organisations, we were severely impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic in the 2020 and 2021 seasons. In 2020 the lockdown provisions meant that almost no activity took place apart from some individual practice later in the year. Although the situation improved slightly in 2021 activities, particularly inter club interactions were severely curtailed. As a consequence, it is not surprising that our membership had significantly reduced by the time we began our first season as a newly incorporated CIO in April 2022.

We organised a very successful ‘try it’ day at the beginning of the new season when people of all ages were encouraged to come along and have a go at the sport with the aid and encouragement of more experienced players. A large and varied group of people enjoyed the event, 27 of whom joined us as novice members over the following few weeks.

We provide support to people who wish to become members, particularly those who have never played the game before. For those new to the sport, we offer a reduced subscription and free coaching. All new members are encouraged to take part in friendly games both between our own members and against local and touring sides. During the 2022 season, in addition to our weekly Club evenings, we organised 30 friendly matches.

As their confidence, and skill increases, all members can participate in league matches of varying degrees of skill level and competitiveness. During 2022 we entered teams in the Riviera Mixed Triples League (organised specifically for developing players), the Men’s Over ‘55s’ League (two teams), the Men’s Mid Devon League and the Ladies South Devon League (two Teams). We were also able to run a full complement of internal club competitions for the first time since 2019, including those for the Ladies and Men’s Novice Trophies.

At the end of the season we had 95 playing members and we look forward to an excellent Covid free season in 2023.
