## **Independent examiner’s report to the trustees of Reseed.** I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of the **Reseed** (the Trust) for the year ended 31[st] December 2022. ## **Responsibilities and basis of report** As the charity trustees of the Trust you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (‘the Act’). I report in respect of my examination of the Trust’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act. ## **Independent examiner’s statement** I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect: 1. Accounting records were not kept in respect of the Trust as required by section 130 of the Act; or 2. The accounts do not accord with those records. I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached. Membership is open to any donor that contributes a one-off donation of £60 or equivalent of this amount over the year e.g. £5 per month for 12 months. For the purposes of encouraging members to join, we specifically invited any donor in 2022 to join as a member going forward based on their support of Reseed in our first year of operations. At the AGM the Trustees seek views and input of members and volunteers. We offer our members open dialogue for any input they would like to contribute throughout the year. - There is a safeguarding policy and anti-bribery and corruption policy in place. Reseed supports our partner Reseed Sierra Leone to have similar documentation and policies in place as part of our MOU and partnership with them. Our principal activities focused on raising funds to support and give grants to our partner, Reseed Sierra Leone, to implement planned sustainable livelihoods programmes in Sierra Leone. **Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects (include within this section the statutory declaration that trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit)** Sustainable livelihoods can encompass many paths of support, our activities in 2022 focused on three main pillars in urban and rural settings in Sierra Leone: Microfinance Agriculture Up-skilling and Employability We believe that, by creating sustainable employment and empowering individuals and communities to reach financial stability, we can lift thousands of people out of poverty. March **2012** **TAR** 3 Doc ID: 4eff56aa7cc62d3e3e1489dc16c552c06b63efe1Doc ID: 0b8c069242f3e9af4e97a8a75aa40da42bfbf6a4 Section D Achievements and performance ## **Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year** ## Programmes **Reseed has three main pillars of sustainable livelihoods programmes in urban and rural settings in Sierra Leone** ; Microfinance, Agriculture and Up-skilling & Employability (US&E). The Microfinance Programme secured two small grants to expand the number of beneficiaries we could reach in 2022. This programme focuses mainly on supporting women, especially single parent care givers. The programme runs in six month cycles starting in April/May and October/November. The programme design includes a business loan and tailored business skills support from our Sierra Leonean business officers. A key achievement in 2022 was that, based on our learnings, the programme design progressed in 2022 to encompass three levels of support and the opportunity for beneficiaries to progress through different the levels, creating a better chance for the entrepreneurs we support to have long term business success. **We estimate that a total of 294 small** ## **microfinance business loans have been distributed to date. The November cycle included:** - **88 microfinance business loans given;** - **71 of which were women, 17 men** - **42 of which were new beneficiaries, 46 ‘repeat’ loans** In October, we were happy to host an **additional business skills workshop for 56 beneficiaries** made possible by a group of visiting volunteers. Our US&E programme started in a small way in September, with **5 young Sierra Leoneans being selected for support to attend vocational training college** . The programme incorporates two elements: 1. Supporting selected individuals to attend and complete a two year course at the local vocational centre to gain essential skills on their path to seeking employment. These courses range from catering to mechanical and electrical engineering. 2. Hosting employability skills workshops for final year students from the vocational centres to introduce and teach them key skills that will empower them to seek formal employment upon graduating. These workshops are due to start early 2023 based on the material and field work that took place during the latter part of 2022. At the end of 2022, under the urban livelihoods umbrella, combining the microfinance and US&E programme, was the start of ‘Reseed Bike Shops’. This small programme is part of our mission to support sustainable livelihoods, and Reseed is using experience and connections to the cycling community in Sierra Leone to support new and existing bike shops, their owners, and mechanics. This programme will fully launch early 2023. This supports farmers and rural communities to make the move from subsistence farming to being able to attend the local market on a regular basis, with large family sizes and many wider dependents, we estimate this element of the programme support **240 semi-direct beneficiaries** . Based on field work and community surveys completed early in 2022, soil degradation is one of the biggest challenges these communities face and in October, phase two of the agriculture programme saw **276 people attend community compost training** . December saw the start of the community seed bank and storage element of the programme, where the seeds harvested from phase one of the programme go into the community seed bank, allowing other farmers in the community to also start their journey of crop diversification and increased yields, enabling them to provide for and support their families. Ways of Working & Capacity Building Reseed is a young and agile organisation with transparency and learning deeply rooted within our work. We work in short, iterative project cycles and are constantly learning and adapting as we go. We believe working in this way allows our programmes to have the most positive impact and success in terms of outcomes and outputs. Our work is locally-rooted and our staff know the communities they support well. This community knowledge is key to project success as it allows them to provide contextually relevant support to those who need it most. We are also committed to supporting our local team in Sierra Leone to become more independent and develop skills to progress their own careers. In 2022 we sent **two microfinance team members to gain their nationally recognised microfinance certificate** (three day course), and our **US&E coordinator attended a one week residential employability workshop** . **All seven of the Sierra Leonean programmes team attended an intensive four day business skills workshop.** ## Fundraising Reseed hosted three events in London for our supporters and donors; a launch party (Nov 2021), a summer party (July 2022) and a winter party (Nov 2022) with 188 attendees across the three events. In 2022 Reseed successfully updated our website (www.reseed.org.uk), and launched across multiple social media platforms, sharing news and programmes updates across different platforms and in quarterly newsletters. We succeeded in securing two small grants from Trust and Foundations for our microfinance programme and one digital grant for software. Over 2022 we focused on gaining a small selection of core supporters including regular monthly donors and several challenge fundraisers.
