## **YoGift Trustee Report 2022/23**

## **Introduction**

The inspiration for YoGift was the recognition that India, which gave the world the life changing practice of yoga, has suffered greatly as a result of the Covid 19 pandemic. Covid19 has further highlighted issues of poverty in India, where many people have insecure employment and are not protected by a comprehensive social security system. The UK Yoga ‘eco-system’ provides an opportunity to both raise awareness of the impact of Covid-19 in India and the desirability, if not moral imperative, for richer nations to help alleviate poverty elsewhere.

YoGift seeks to:

- use the UK yoga ‘ecosystem’ to raise awareness of, and funds for, poverty relief in India

- fund, through grants and donations, UK based charities working to alleviate poverty in India, with an initial focus on charities working with children.

YoGift (a UK registered Charitable Incorporated Organisation) and has a Board of Trustees, who for 2022/23 were:

- Diane Groom (Chair – appointed 1 September 2021)

- John Henkel (Treasurer - appointed 1 September 2021)

- • Emma Findlay (appointed 1 September 2021)

- Jamie Blowers (appointed 1 September 2021)

YoGift’s first accounting period ended on 31 March 2023.

## **YoGift Objectives**

The objectives of YoGift, as set out in its constitution, are:

_The object of the CIO is the relief of poverty of children living in India by the provision of grants and donations to other registered UK charities furthering this purpose._

## **Grant Making Policy**

YoGift has a grant making policy in place which sets out the principles and criteria in place

## **Overview of the 2022/23 Activities**

YoGift achieved Charitable Status at the end of 2021 and began activities in 2022 in line with the operating model set out below.

YoGift - UK Registered Charity No. 1197129

The Trustees saw 2022/23 as the charity’s initiation phase, which involved developing a number of capabilities as well as a start to fund-raising and grant making.

Pump-priming funding from the YoGift founders enabled the development and hosting of a website ((https://www.yogift.org/) and the establishment of social media presence on Facebook and Instagram. A donation platform (Givey) was set up as one of a number of donation pathways.

A number of policies and procedures, including financial, grant making and risk management, were developed as part of the YoGift initiation phase.

Several events hosted and promoted by Yoga teachers and studios were held as fundraisers for YoGift, with income supplemented by a corporate donation from Barclays Bank. In addition, a fund-raising 100 mile cycle ride was held in October 2022.

Harmony House (India - https://www.harmonyhouseindia.org/) was selected as the first delivery partner and the first two grant payments were made in 2022/23, in line with the charitable objects and grant making policy.
