Section C Objectives and activities
Summary of the objects of the charity set out in its governing document
The objects of the CIO are to advance in life and relieve needs of young people up to the age of 18 through: a) The provision of recreational and leisure time activities provided in the interest of social welfare, designed to improve their conditions of life; b) Providing support and activities which develop their skills, capacities and capabilities to enable them to participate in society.
Throughout the year activities have taken place which have helped children and young people across a wide range of ages which have given the opportunity to develop their skills, capacities and capabilities. Throughout all activities, trustees have had due regard to the charity commissions public benefit guidance and have taken into account both the guidance and the objects of the charity.
Activities throughout the course of the year have included the provision of recreational and leisure time activities which were designed to help children and young people across the four quadrants of:
-
Environment
-
Skills
-
Community cohesion and social capital
-
Health and wellbeing
Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects (include within this section the statutory declaration that trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit)
Activities often crossed the four quadrants through for example using gardening projects to encourage children to learn to grow food from the land and eating healthy food. This included a partnership with ASDA and subsequent funding of £629 plus an in-kind donation of time to develop within children healthy eating and growing and refurbish areas of the secret garden on the site of Blackrod Primary School, a partner to the CIO. Asda delivered activities for children in school time through our facilitation of the partnership. This benefited 315 children.
We have planted over 345 trees in the community to further develop in children the skills of planting and growing and have fostered links with LEAF education. We supported a visit to take 35 children to an active, educational school farm teaching children about different aspects of farming. We aim to support the school in the year ahead to become a Farming Demonstration School.
As a CIO we have engaged with the NHS initiative, Every Mind Matters where children and their parents have taken part in trial initatives designed to foster a healthy mind and body. Children and families have engaged in sessions relating to mindfulness, yoga, woodland wellbeing and eco-art. They have been given guidance and have been made aware of the Every Mind Matters initiative designed by the NHS. Throughout this iniatiative we have directly engaged 30 children / parents from within the Blackrod community, and have had further engagement with over 300 families within the Blackrod community sharing with them the Every Mind Matters resources. We were granted funding of £500 for this project.

As part of our quest to further develop community cohesion and social capital, we took nine disadvantaged children on a planned, and risk assessed flight with a charity focusing on giving children good experiences at Christmas time. This gave them an experience of their lifetime as they met Santa Claus.
In relation to skills and additional learning, a partnership with the Octagon through the two year ‘Into the Woods’ project continues to take place in collaboration with Blackrod Primary School. This was established prior to the establishment of the formal CIO constitution. It has meant that there has been direct engagement with children across the school several activities and sessions including:
Assemblies - Reception, key stage 1, 2 – the Octagon worked with 530 children in total over 4 hours.
KS2 workshops - Four x 1.5 hour workshops were delivered to KS2 classes (6 contact hours) A total of 120 children participated (30 in each)
Summer school 2021 - 10 days of summer school were delivered, in total (48 contact hours). 30 children participated over a two week period.
In addition, after school club ran for one week and 20 children participated. It has been and continues to be a very successful project.
We have held a series of family focused bikeability sessions in collaboration with the Active Lives team at Bolton Council. Through these sessions which ran out of school time we taught 4 adults and 3 children how to ride bikes safely in their local community. More sessions are planned.
We have developed an initiative with Bolton Library and Museum Services which has enabled children and young people from within Blackrod Primary School to see local artworks within the school building.
Finally and in addition, we have recently been successful in obtaining funding from Awards for All to the value of £9,950 to deliver an inter-generational project called ‘Cooking up Connections.’ This is in the planning stages.
We were also pleased to receive SEED funding from the University of Manchester to set up the CIO initially.
Finally we have coordinated engagement with out of school providers, Forest Horizons to give additional opportunities to young children.
As trustees we have due regard to risks and auditing measures throughout all of the projects and have a reporting mechanism back to each trustee meeting on each project as well as reporting as appropriate to funding providers.
