Hlstory
The Hospital was foLtnded in 1893 by Mrs Katherine Love, a local benefactor. At first It was known a5
the Ea5ingwold Cottage Hospital but later renamed St Monlca's Hospital.
Taken over by the Secretary of State for He31th In 1948, the HospStal Is now deslgnated a Community
Hospital with 12 beds. It Is admlnlstered by the York Teachin8 Hospital NHS Foundatlon Trust
providlng nursln&, rehabllitation and physSotherapy care.
The League of Friends of St Monlca's Hospital was founded In 1969 to 5UPPOrt ar¢d promote the work
of the Hospital. It has worked tirele5$1y to rèi5e fund5 for various bulldln8 improvements a5 well as
nursln8 and medical needs. The League obtained charitable status in 1983 under the Governlng
Document dated 13th january 1983. A new 8overnin8 document Iconstitutionl was approved by the
Charity Commission on 19th October 2018. This new document enables the Trustees to allocaie funds
for spendSn8 in the wider community. The primary focus of spendSn8 however will always be the
Hospital. On 10 December 2021 the Charlty chan8ed status to a Charitable Incorporated
Organlsatlon. The Annual General Meetlng Is open to the public and Members are entltled to speak
and vote.

Under the revised Governing Document IConstStutionl one thSrd of the Trustees retire ffom office at
the conclusion of the Annual General Meeting but are eligible for re.election. The total number of
Trustees may not be less than five. Followlng the Charity Commission's guidance all Trustees
undertake famS1iarisatlon on governance and trustees dutles and responsibllitie5. In Addition, all
trustees are now asked to obtain a credit fatin8 score.
Meetin85 of trustees are held in person every two months.

Funds and Donatlons
Many people in the local ¢ommunlty tontlnue to be extremely 8*nerous. Whi151 no fvndralslng events
have been held this year. the trust has rece5ved donations made at funerals. From time to tirne the
Friends also benetits frorn substantial le8acie5 and anonymous donations through the Charities Aid
Foundation. RoutSne allocations and purcha5e5 9150me medical equipment are made by the Charitv
annually. These include..

Donations whlth are speclfied by the dgnor tor the benèll¢ of staff are forwarded to tht York and
Scarborough Teachlng Hospltal NHS Four*datlon Trust. The hospltal manager Is then able to request
money from this fund.
Letters ol thank5 for major amounts are sent by the Chalrman or Tre•surer.
The TIu5tees are very awar* of the generoslty of many people and every effort has been made to
ensure all donatSons are used to the best POS5ible advantage of patlents within th* H05pltal and wlthln
the communltle5 Served by It. Many hospbtal projects and major Improvements requlre the approval of
the NHS.

The tufrent pollcy of the Charlty Is to Invest excess funds In bu51dlng soc5etles and banks all ol whlch are
overed by the Flnanclal Servlces Comptnsatlon Scheme, In addltlon an amount not exceedlng 20% of
total funds has been placed In a medlum Ilsk Investment ¢ru5t Sn order to Improve the overall return on
funds Invested. Review5 are £arrSed out regularly to ensure that the flnanclal Instltutlons contlnue to
provide the appropriate and secure investment opportunltles.
In 2023 the cash Investments wlth varlou5 banks and bullding 50cietles were moved to a tash
Investment platform. Insl8n15, which is an Snternet.based system introduced to U5 throu8h Mowatt
Flnancial PlarniTrg. The system provldes the Trustees wlth the opportunlty to take advantag* of the
best cash Investment rates available and all monles invested are covered by the F5CS.
The trustees are aware of reviews a5se55ing the use of NHS premI5è5 In the Easingwold area. Whllst no
plan5 have been published, the trustees have dècided that it would be prudent to notionally retain
£250,0(X) In case nev4 eouipment Is required Sn the next lew yèar5 lor the hospltal.

Our financial advlsor'g work continuès to bé carried out for no charge a5 thelr contrlbvtlon to the work
of the charity.
Artlvltles
The trust has provlded toiletrfes for patlents and weekly visSts from a halrdresser. Efforts are beln
made to provSde clothln8 packs for those patlents who arr4ve at the hospltal without sufflclent changes
of clothes, These small chan8es have resulted in posiilve comments from patiènts. Television$ whlch
were orlglnally purtha5ed by the trust have been replaced as thèy fall.
In Ilne with the York and Scarborough Teachlng H05pltèls NHS Foundatlon Trust Autumn Project to
refresh palliative care facillties Sn hospltals. FOSMH paid for the decoration and updatlll8 of the
Palllatlve Care room and another roorr used for palliative care.
FOSMH has agreèd to fynd a projèct to provlde Comprehèn51ve Gerlatrlc Revlew5 lor people who are at
rlsk of becomlng frail and requlrSng hospltal treatment. Each patient spends about two hours wlth a
medlcal team at St Monica's Hospltal. The team comprlses a GP, physlotheraplst, prescriber and
occupatlonal therapist. The project Is under the management of a local GP and wlll be funded for
years wlth réiular revlews of progress by irustees.
The trust has contlnued to recrult and traln volunteers to work In the hospltal. Most of the work Is
provldlns fefre5hments lor patlents whlch relleves staff of those dulles. Thelr asslstance Is appreclated
by both staff afid p•tlents.
Close attentSon ha5 been pald to the effect of altèratlons to other medlcal premises, such as the Health
Cèntre. In the Easlngwold arèa to a55es5 what effect this wlll mean lor St Monlca's and Its facSlltles,
partlcularly thosè whlch have been provldéd in prevlous years by the trust.
FOSMH hos contlnued rnaklng 8rants w5thin the local communStles. These grants a￿ detailed
elsewhere In th15 rtptsrt. The trustees are conscious of the need to make grants W15ely and, to a551st In
good declslon makSn& the 8rants pollcyls re8ularly revlewed. It Is clear ihat the role of FOSMH as a
grant making charlty has become well known in the area leadin8 to irncreased requests. Requests ore
stlll being made to FQSMH which would be better direrted to other 8rani makers such as Sport England
for sporting equlpment. The trustees are keen not to put off requests and, therefore, elforts are made
to dlrètt requesls to the m95t su5table source ol funds.
The partnèrship wlth EDCCA has continutd through tht year with FOSMH fundln8 Meals on Wheels
and contributing to Men In Sheds. Men in Sheds has relurbi5hed garden furnlture for the hospltal. The
trustees of boih charlties constantly conslder areas Whe￿ the charlti?s can work c105ely tO8ether.
Comrnunlcatlons
One trustee has respon5ibillty for the cornmunlcatlons strategy. Major grants are atcompanied by
storSes In local pres5. social media or radlo if appropriate. E¥try effort 15 madè to attract more blds for

Safe8uardln8 Is a key governance prlorlty fpr the Lea8ue of Frlends Trustees. We are commltted to
keepin8 safe the vulnerable people whom we work alon65ide and acknowled8e our duty to att
appropriately to any allegations, report5 or 5usplclons of abuse. It Is Important to have the pollry and
procedures In place so that whtn v(slunteer5 are recruited, they ènd trustees wlll be clear about
re5ponsibllltles, The sale8uafdin8 policy 15 reviewed every two years. All volunteers and tiustees wlth
regular access to the hosplial under80 08S checks.

Durlng the year grant5 of £62.778 were pald out (details are In Note 4 to the accounts). Expendlture
relatSn8 to hospltal needs for 2024 wa5 £16.267. The Income avllable to the charlty over the year was
£43.361. The expenses of admlnlsterlng the charlty 2024 were £3,303.
Future Ac¢lvltl•i
Having lolned the Yorkshire Funder5 organlsatlon In 2023, trustees have learnt much about 8ood grant-
makin8 whlch wlll continue to be an Important part gf the tru5V5 work. Mentlon has been made of the
hanges to NHS premlses and worklng practlce5 In the area. The trustees will take every opportunSty
to make the case for retaining St Monita's hospital 35 a valuable resource in the Ea51n8wold area.

I report in respect of my examinatlon of the Tru5tee'5 accounts carried out under section 145
of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examinatloft I have followed all the applicable Directions given
by the chairty Commissioner under sertion 1451511bl of the 2011 Att.

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in
connection with the examÈnation giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:
