From 1st October 2022 to 30th September 2023
Charity name: North Staffs Rowing Club (NSRC)

Objectives and Activities
SORP reference
Para 1.17
Summary of the purposes of
the charity as set out in its
governing document
The promotion of community participation
in healthy recreation for the benefit of the
inhabitants of the North Staffordshire region
by the provision of facilities for amateur
rowing. (For the purposes of this clause
facilities" means land, buildings,
equipment, access to coaching and
or

orting activities
Membershi
NSRC aims to expand both its Adult and
Junior membership as a main activity to
support the promotion of participation in
amateur rowing. For Adults, NSRC offers
membership to experienced or returning
rowers and runs Learn-to-Row (LTR)
courses for beginners. For Juniors, NSRC
runs outreach programmes with local
schools, LTR courses and supports Junior
rowing from J12 (12-year olds) through to
J18 (18-year olds).
The only restrictions on membership are
those of medical conditions which impact
the ability of an individual to row safely.
NSRC aims to support assisted rowing
where it can but this is limited by the nature
of its facilities.
Summary of the main
activities in relation to those
purposes for the public
benefit, in particular, the
activities, projects or
services identified in the
accounts.
Para 1.17 and
1.19
ment and Facilities

boathouse on Rudyard Lake in
Staffordshire. It maintains a fleet of boats
that are available for members to use and
also invests in new boats.

Achievements and Performance
SORP reference
Membershi
Adult member numbers have remained
largely static. Junior member numbers vary
over the course of the school year and are
limited by the number of boats available for
coaching and competitions.
Summary of the main
achievements of the charity,
identifying the difference the
charity's work has made to
the circumstances of its
beneficiaries and any wider
benefits to society as a
whole.
Para 1.20
Only one adult LTR course was held during
the course of the year as it was decided to
concentrate on further integrating the
existing novice rowers who had joined in
the previous year.
Com
etitions
Regional competitions were impacted or
cancelled by high river levels due to heavy
rain. NSRC entered both Junior and Adult
crews at five events (Northwich,
Shrewsbury, Chester, Trentham and
Warrington). There were a number of wins
for Junior crews and the Women's 8 won at
Northwich.
ui
ment and Facilities
NSRC purchased a second-hand
lightweight single (£6.5k) on the open
market as well as an older single from a
member" both boats are primarily for use by
Juniors.
There has been significant expenditure on
maintenance due to either accidental
damage or wear and tear in order to keep
boats in good condition for rowing.
NSRC is in the process of reviewing its
safety launches and has decided to remove
one of them from service. A decision is still
to be made as to whether one of the
remaining two launches should be
replaced.
Juniors are coached on Saturday mornings
throughout most of the school year with
additional evening sessions during the
lighter summer months.
Adults row in organised sessions on
Sunday mornings as well as Thursday
evenings during the summer months. In
addition, competent adults can use club
boats either on their own or as part of a
crew at any time.

Separate indoor training sessions are held
for both Adults and Juniors at a local gym
during the winter months.
Warrin
ton Youth Rowin
NSRC has entered into an agreement with
Warrington Youth Rowing, a charity
(1176153). Under this agreement, NSRC
provides coaches and equipment during
term time to children on the Pupil Premium
Register at Macclesfield Academy to
enable them learn to row and potentially
take part in competitions.
Fundraisin
A number of successful fundraising events
were held including a 12-hour on water
row, a 24-hour land-based row and a
Christmas raffle which was match funded
by Barclays.
Social
In addition to social activities in and around
the sponsored rowing events, NSRC also
organised an end of season bar-b-q and
awards ceremony, Xmas curry and
individual members participated in the
Moissac rowing 'Randonnée'.
Coachin
Five members have passed RYA Level 2
powerboat training which is a requirement
for operating a motorised launch on
Rudyard Lake and hence coaching. In
addition, a First Aid course was held for
coaches and volunteers.

Financial Review
Review of the charity's
financial position at the end
of the period
Para 1.21
Full details of the accounts are provided in
the submitted form CC16a.
Note 1: The previous (and first) year's
Annual Report was for a period of
approximately 9 months from the date
th
NSRC became a charity (10 December
2021) to the traditional year end on 30
September of the following year. Absolute
comparisons with the figures in the 2021/22
report should therefore be treated with
caution.
th
Note 2: The 'Other' category in receipts and
payments primarily covers race fees which
NSRC collects from members and pays to
British Rowing for competition entry. This
is done for convenience and financial
control but distorts figures because it
changes based on the number of
competition entries but cannot be used for
other purposes.
NSRC'S total bank balance at year end was
£17.8k which was 58 % higher than at the
start of the reporting period. Form CC16a
notes liabilities of approximately £4k at year
end arising from boats which had been sent
away for repair (committed) but not yet
invoiced. A more realistic increase in total
funds would therefore be approximately
22%.
Income (excluding Other) increased by
approximately £15.5k. The main source of
income is membership subscriptions which
increased primarily due to an increase in
rates which came into force at the end of
the previous reporting period. There was
also a substantial Gontiibution from
fundraising (£7.5k) plus donations and
grants (£1.5k total) which are more
accessible as a Charitable Incorporated
Organisation (CIO) Coaching fees from
Keele University Boat Club (KUBC)
contributed £3.6k but it should be noted
that there is some doubt as to whether this
will continue in the future (see Principal
Risks)
Expenditure (including boat repair liabilities
noted above but excluding Other) increased
by approximately £6.5k but this was more
than offset by the increase in income
resulting in the overall improvement in
finances over the course of the year.

Rent payments to Rudyard Lake Trust are
the main non-discretionary expenditure
item. The rental agreement has been
renegotiated (backdated to 1" October
2021) to provide long term savings.
2022123 was a good year considered in
isolation and NSRC is in a position to
support its current plans. However, it
should be noted that NSRC finances tend
to swing from net deficit to net gain on an
annual basis depending on 'lumpy' items
such as boat maintenance and new
equipment purchase but the long~term
trend is downwards.
Statement explaining the
policy for holding reserves
stating why they are held
Para 1.22
The charity aims to build reserves in order
to upgrade or purchase new boats or
equipment in accordance with an agreed
plan.
The trustees have decided that a minimum
bank balance will be maintained in order to
cover fixed outgoings (primarily rent and
insurance) in the event of an unforeseen
cessation or reduction in activity. This
minimum level is specified in the Internal
Financial Controls Procedure and is subject
to periodic review. If the bank balance falls
below this level, the trustees will take
greater control of day-to-da
finances.
The club has no reserves other than the
current account balance.

were subsequently re-elected in order to
provide continuity. In subsequent years, a
third of existing trustees are required to
retire.

membership and must be full members of
the club.
Prior to the AGM a call is put out to all
eligible Adult members for those who wish
