Risk management
The trustees discuss possible risks to the charity and how to mitigate them at our re8ular monthly
meetlngs. We have identilied the main risks faced by the charity as follows.
Insufficlent funds to run our core activities
In 2022 we prepared a 5-year plan of activities and budget. This allow5 for inflationary Increases in our
C05t5 as forecast by the Office for National Statistics. This will be reviewed each yeor going forward. We
have prepared a fundralslng plan based on thls budget and secured five-year funding from The Lottery
Communitie5 Fund, starting in October 2023. This funding will not cover all of our activities and we will
5tlll need to apply to other funders. At the beginnlng of each year we review our bud8et and plan our
fundraising application5 accordingly. We review thi5 throughout the year and adapt our activities
dependlng on the level of fund5 we have been able to ra15e.
Provision of venues for our activities
The majorlty of our activitie5 take place at Brighton College, Eastern Road, BN2 OAL and St. Marv
Magdalens Community Centre, 55 Upper North Street, Brighton, BNI 3FH. We pay an hourly fee for the
use of St Mary Ma8dalens, which we include in our budgeting. Brighton College very klndly provides LIS
wlth space free of charge as an in-kind donation. We are aware that this may not always be avallable to
us and so maintain regular contact with the college to ensure we will know in advance If there are any
changes to this arrangement and will be able to adjust our fundin8 or athvltfjes as necessary. We have
allowed for this eventuality in our 5-year budget runnin8 2023- 2028.
Rlsk of a 5erlous incldent or safeguardln8 incident
We have robust safeguardln8 procedures a5 Set out In our Safeguardin8 policies for chIld￿n and
vulnerable adults, and ensure that our designated 5afeguardin8 lead receives regular training.

families to continue to communicate with thelr older relatives, to better connect with their heritage, to
read Ilterature and acce55 written and spoken informatlon from Syria, and to feel a sense of belonging in
the Syrian communlty locally.
At our graduatlon event In June 2023 we thanked our teachers for all theSr hard work and care during
the year and celebrated our children'5 achievements 50 they could understand how valued they are by
all of our community.
Building an integRted and inter8enerational community
Every Sunday, alongside the Children's Arabic School, we provided language & skills training, social

Festivals and celebrations
Our celebrations build a bridge between our Ilves in Syria to our new Ilves in Brighton and Hove. Our

children and 125 adult5 attended.
Our planned celebratlons for Easter, Mother's Day and Eid al-Fitr were delayed this year a5 Mother's day
(which we celebrate on 21st March every yearl fell in the middle of Ramadan. We therefore plan to hold
a large '3 in I mix and match, community celebration in July 2024. We will have presents for the
mothers, acrlvities for the children, and Syrian music so that everyone ha5 a truly memorable day.
Wednesday Advlce Drop-in and Breakfast Club

and accessed by many people beyond our own communlty. We help people to acce55 the servlces they
need, signpost them to specialist agencies. We provide a listening ear, translation, accompany people to
appointments, and continue to provide support until it is no longer needed.
Every two weeks we hold our Breakfast Club of tradldonal Syrian food, where everyone gathers and we
invite repreSenta￿ve5 from the wider community to join us.
Makin8 our mark in the city
We connect with and Support many other orBanlsatlons In the city. by sharlng our knowledge,
experience and culture. This year we were proud to see our esteemed professor of Arabic music, Jamal

peoples and receive an award for his work.
Closer to home, our member, Wadee Skaif, was honoured with an award from Brighton Table Tennls

such as CAB, BHESCO, Money Advice plus, Brighton and Hove Clty Council, East Sussex County Council,
local churches, mosques, universities, and school5.
Use of volunteers
Volunteers are an important resource to us in all our activities. They run the activitie5, prepare the food,
provide transport, give advlce and support. and help in too many ways to Ilst. We wouldn't be able to do
what we do without them. The majority of our volunteers are also members and beneficiaries. We aim
for our volunteers to gain skllls. knowledge and experience through their volunteering role that 15 also
an 055et to them in sustaining and improving the Ilves of themselve5 and their families. All our trustees
