Tuesday 9[th] September 2025 – Stradbroke Sports & Community Centre AGM – Yearly Review
Welcome one and all to Stradbroke Sports & Community Centre.
I will start by saying that all Stradbroke Sports Club have been asked to provide their own year review and what follows now is a review of this Committees efforts since last years AGM with the Sports Clubs reports following on.
So let’s get cracking as a real lot has happened, some good, some not so good but overall I think I can safely say that we are in better shape than we were this time last year.
We started our redecoration programme with the Club Room and turned it from a shocking pink nightmare into a calm space for people to enjoy. Next we turned our attention to the Ladies & Gent’s WCs. Our WCs now have the WOW factor and I think they will serve us well for a very long time.
We welcomed a Yoga Class, the Community Choir, a Ballet Class, Senior Football team and Karate. The Yoga & Karate teachers have both moved away from the village and the ballet class moved to Wilby Village Hall due to room availability clashes. We are happy to inform you that we have two new teachers to run Yoga and Karate classes and these start in the next few days.
Our changing rooms had been neglected over many years and nothing was highlighted to us, but plaster was missing from the ceiling, large cracks (big enough to get a pencil in) were running down the walls, the floors were 15mm below the skirting boards and the paint was peeling off in several places, all mostly due to subsidence. This committee put many hours into completing insurance paperwork and meeting surveyors. Our insurance claim was accepted and the trees that caused the floors to subside were removed. We have subsequently discovered that the Club room floor had also dropped and had a large crack in one wall; these items were added to the final repair list. We now have new flooring throughout the changing rooms and showers, all the cracks have been repaired, the walls and ceilings re plastered and painted. The bar room walls were also repaired and painted. The club room floor had it’s 16mm drop levelled out, new flooring fitted, the cracked wall repaired and the whole area redecorated. These works have now been completed at a cost to this Community Centre of £1000.00 but it is not about the money (although we would have liked a contribution from the Sports Clubs), this committee have ensured that the building is stable, safe and secure for many many years to come.
We had a truck reverse into the Club room roof – no witnesses of course, and it cost us just under £350 to have it fixed. We had to replace a water boiler as someone let it boil dry at a cost of £120. We suffered an Electrical Over-Voltage Incident that destroyed our heating controls, our PA system amplifier and the Bluetooth power supply. It also blew the secondary fuse in the Stereo Amplifier. Then our drains blocked, not once but twice and we were seriously thinking that subsidence might be the cause, but since the Ballet class moved to Wilby’s Community Centre, our drains have been fine, but Wilby’s have started to suffer – I’ll leave you to make up your own mind on that one.
Our scrap metal skip raised some funds and at the same time provided a very useful service to the community. We had a few items go “Walkies” that would have added significantly to the monies received.
We installed a separate TV aerial for the main hall so we no longer have to climb on a chair in the Club room to connect the hall receiver.
We purchased rubber wheelchair ramps to make the entrances step-less; these are positioned by the main entrance doors and the main hall fire doors.
We had a small water leak to the bar store ceiling which caused 2 ceiling tiles to fall earthward setting off the burglar alarm which was mistaken as the Fire Alarm and resulted in a visit from the Fire Brigade late one Friday night.
The Main Hall and Webb room have been redecorated in neutral colours. A big Thank you to Ron Rankin for doing a fine job.
We held a Day Time Disco over the Christmas period, which was a lot of fun. We broke even on that one but could have done with a few more people burning off their Christmas pud and mince pies.
We opened the hall for a Live Screening of the Women’s Football final – the hall was not packed by any means but there was a good atmosphere plus our bar was open.
We began a Coffee & Chat Drop In on Wednesday afternoons from 3pm til 5pm and our feedback is that people feel comfortable, relaxed and able to join in with the conversations. Big thanks go to Marian Ovens for running it and Dave Dawson for organising it.
Our range of beers and ales has been extended and we now offer many of the best ales, ciders, lagers and wines available. We also have a fair range of zero alcohol beers & lagers available. Following the incident with the Thai Takeaway Van, our bar went cashless.
We have now begun our main kitchen’s major refurbishment, this will see it’s décor transformed with glass splashbacks, high gloss door fronts and new stainless steel worktops. We will install a commercial dishwasher, new sinks and a new fridge freezer. Finally a coat of paint will complete the job. As part of the works we are going to install drinking water taps to the bar and kitchenette.
The website stradbrokeonline.org is administered by us and we are currently reviewing the entire content. To that end I have written to the clubs and organisations that have content on the site asking them to review their pages and submit updates. Some of these pages date back to 2017 and have not been reviewed or updated since that time. I have to say the response could be better.
We have also begun a project to automate opening & closing of our main entrance doors. Our 50/50 funding bid to BMSDC has been approved. The plan is to have door opening buttons to the exterior and interior so that the less mobile members of our community can easily enter and leave the premises. We anticipate that the door project will complete 1[st] quarter 2026. We like to think that part funding is preferable to asking for the whole amount as it allows other organisations a bite of the same apple.
The Club Room TV decided to give up the ghost during a lecture and so we have purchased at no cost to the clubs, a new 65 inch TV, a TV stand and a sound bar to replace the defunct unit. We will install it after our Broadband changeover.
We took our wheelie bins over to the Music Day to prevent the aluminium drink cans going to landfill. After sorting and crushing they went for scrap and raised £10.80p
We are in the process of changing our Broadband Provider to Framlingham Community Broadband and will take the opportunity to double our download speed for just a few pounds extra a month. At the same time we will be removing the pay phone in the lobby as no one has used it in a decade.
We have a lovely group of volunteer bar staff, but we are suffering to cover all the events that now require a bar. If you are interested, then full training will be given. It is fun; but, we can only do what our volunteers can do.
We have a wooden door to the rear of the changing rooms, it does not not self-close and this has been left open during matches on 3 occasions to my knowledge exposing the building and player’s possessions to opportunists. It is on the To Do list. If you use this door, please ensure you shut and lock it.
So we think you can see we fulfil our objective to provide the best facilities for this village’s clubs, societies and population as well as those of surrounding villages.
Finally I want to thank the WI for it’s generous donation toward our Commercial Dishwasher, Councillor for Stradbroke & Laxfield, Mr. Anders Linder for his very generous contribution towards our Kitchen works, The Stradbroke Trust for it’s generous donation to our door automation and the Music Day Committee for their unexpected but very welcome donation to this Community Centre; it is all very much appreciated and will be very well spent.
Second Finally – I thought I’d add, that our Prize Draw for a children’s paddling pool had a single entry, so big congratulations go to Sandra Darkins & Family. Well done.
Thank you for your attention. I’ll now hand you over to Richard, who will talk to our financials.
