**Stradbroke Sports and Community Centre - Chairman’s Report September 2023** 

It has been an eventful year. 

An amicable agreement was reached between the Bowls, Tennis and Youth Football Clubs regarding their Membership. We are awaiting a similar agreement from the Cricket Club. 

As part of the late Queen’s Green Canopy volunteers planted 450 saplings as a Woodland on land just off the Tyrala Way, along with the Stradbroke Oak. Another 150 saplings were planted in a Wildflower Meadow between the High School and Neaves Lane. We will watch with anticipation for the Woodland and Wildflower Meadow to grow for us all to enjoy in the future 

Stradbroke Cinema’s audience continues to steadily grow and we have enjoyed a wide variety of films over the months. A new laptop has been purchased as we now download films directly rather than rely on Blu-ray technology. We have had to increase our ticket price from May 2023 but still provide good value for money with friendly staff! 

As the proposed extension is on hold, the Trustees agreed to replace the doors and windows in the Club Room and to repaint the windows and door in the Changing Rooms. This really has improved the whole look and insulation of the building. The refurbishment of the Kitchen, Toilets and Showers has been delayed somewhat due to the uncertainty surrounding the future of the Community Centre but hopefully will be underway in the months ahead. 

In January 2023 it became apparent that without more volunteers and Trustees the Community Centre would not be able to remain open. By directly asking users and residents, volunteers stepped up to help in the Cinema but we couldn’t persuade others to become Trustees. With 3 Trustees retiring at this AGM and 1 whose term of office has come to an end we decided to hold a Public Meeting regarding possible closure. It was with huge relief that both prospective Trustees and volunteers came forward and closure was thwarted. 

On a personal note, I would like to take this opportunity of saying thank you. My first role 10 years ago was – I thought - as a volunteer helping to run of the Cinema. That night I became a co-opted Trustee without realizing! I was elected Chairman in January 2017 and having had no experience relied heavily on other Trustees to guide me – I have learnt an awful lot and at times have struggled but with their help have got through. So thank you again to all the Trustees for putting up with me and also to David Merritt who continues to care for our Community Centre keeping it in good order. So the time has come to allow others to take up the reins and I wish the new Trustees good luck in their new roles
