R egular activities:
Della’s Diners, Memory Cafe, Singing for the Brain ( in conjunction with the Alzheimer’s Society) and Amble nor Ramble are the backbone of Minehead Dementia Action Alliance (MDAA). The effect of a Covid shocked population was felt by lower attendance numbers inititially but these increased steadily over the year.
Fundraising:
We have had a very successful fundraising year and large sums were raised at a grand Charity Ball, a sponsored Sky Dive and a sponsored 20 mile walk. Other successful events included a 60th birthday party where donations were given instead of presents, We also held Cream Teas and concerts.
Donations:
We are extremely grateful for the money that has been donated to us in memory of loved ones.
Grants:
We were fortunate to receive a grant from from Somerset Community Foundation and these funds are ring fenced to pay for our Administrator. We were also fortunate to receive a grant from Minehead Town Council and funding from the Co-op Local Community Fund.
Raising awareness of dementia in the local community:
This is an important part of MDAA and in the Autumn of 2022 we were pleased to have a display at the West Somerset conference in Watchet entitled ‘Travelling the Dementia Journey’. The event was very successful with many local providers of services represented along with National organisations.
Following on from the above conference MDAA helped to organise a Roadshow in Minehead in April to launch the newly formed ‘Somerset Dementia Wellbeing Service’. Once again many local organisations and professionals were in attendance and were able to offer support and information for people with dementia and their carers.
Other forms of raising awareness included holding activities during the Alzheimer’s Society Dementia Action Week in May; having a presence at the Minehead Steam Punk Festival; having information stands in the Co-op & Tescos and also at Westerley Care home.
