PASTORAL REPORT
As usual the Pastoral Team have been busy and diligenl behind Ihe scenes in helping
and caring for the Church family. We thank each member of the Postoral Team for
this, and a150 to Anne, who continues to help us, with her mony phone colls.
Members of the Pastoral Teom have now completed the Sofeguarding Training al
Churchill Melhodisl Church on 18 February ￿25. under the really inleresting and
capoble hand5 of Ruth Thomas.
Looking forward, we are in the process of arranging an annual Pasloral Meeting wlh
Rev Andrew. Also we will be discussing an option of changing our December
Christmos gel logether to a different monlh.
Please keep watching ovt for anyone not in church, a 5 minute phone call can mean
so much to someone. especially If they are on their Ovm.
Sharon Wilkinson & Jackie Hc￿keSbY
STEWARDS
The current steward's team comprises Judith Price, Brian Price, Jackie Howkesby, Ken
Young ond Stuart Seel. The teom would like to formally welcome Rev Andrew Bell as
this is the first opportunity lo do ￿ officiolty since he arrived as our minster in

It is clear that. as a church. we are going lo have to face more Sundays when we are
not able to be allocated o preacher due to a circuit wde shortage. The stewards
leum hope3 Ihat all the chuTch family wll be open to looking at new ideas to Iray and
accommodate this and will help Ihe stewards in organising setvices.
The team would like to thank all those who do help out at Sundoy worship whether by
reading or leoding proyers ond all who help at larger evenls such as wedding5 and

CLEANING
I would like to express my sincere thanks to Ihe ever dwindling band (Chris Shaw.
Jeannette Jones ond Trevor Jonesl. who clean our church premises and keep dust
and cobwebs elc. al boy. I would also like lo thonk the Thursdoy lunch leam who
keep on eye on Ihe toilets and make sure they are clean. We still manage to clean
the church, hall and associated rooms 3 weeks out of four.
Deeper cleaning lasks are underlaken ot our regular maintenance doys, the last of
which was on Saturday 14th June. We osk groups lo cleon up after themselves, in
respect ot the rooms they use bul this does not olways happen. If anyone would like to
volunteer to clean please contact me and I will be happy to explain whot needs to
happen and to otlach you lo one of the e￿Sting cleaning teams.

PROPERIY
We church members are custodians of a large, elaborote and decoratlve building
with Grade 2 listed status. It is o complex and expensive lask to keep our building and
grounds in good shape but ot present we ore doing OK.
The project to install secondary glazing in Ihe moin hall hos been completed this year
ond has made a significant improvement lo heating effecliveness, general comfort
ond noise levels in the hall whilst being very unobtrusive in oppearance. The church
councll hos approved a ￿rther project lo insloll similar glazing to the kitchen, the
library. the Oasis and the Vestry, this wll be progressed this coming year but due to
project bureoucracy may take some time. on sunny doys the main hall needs blinds.
partlculatly if Ihe screen I projector s in use. these are fumishings and can be
purchased without raising a project.
int
nonc
Monitoring, maintenance and rectificolion are proceeding on several front5. We
continue lo have some penetrating damp problems on the back woll of the church, in
the tronsepl and on Ihe wall behind the communion table. These are being monitored
and will be redecorated in Ihe next few years using speciol brealhable paints as
advised by specialist decorators we have consvlted: this problem 15 one of
management there is no permanent cure. The condilion of the mullions in the gallery
windrow is slowly deteriorating Ihough Ihey remain weathertight. This window will need
specialist work by stonemasons at some time in Ihe future. The point finish on our metal
railings is deleriorating, these need redecorotion, we will plan Ihis work eilher this
coming summer or next year. You will remember how we needed to move lo the hall
for worship during Ihe winter due to a faull wlth the main church boiler. This problem
was eventually fixed but this boiler 15 also old and nearing end of life. It is also obsolete,
and spares are becoming difficult to source. We should Iherefore plan for
replocement in the short lo medium limescale. this require a modern boiler with an
interfoce system to our old pipewotk as the exisling pipes and radiators would
probably spring leeks under the higher pressure of o modem sealed and pressurised
Page3of8

system. Our boiler engineer informs us fhat this replacement would be around £25k.
The organ is working but we are owore thot the whole electro - mechanical aclion
which enables it to play is wearing out. As we have no one to play il at present this
expensive repair is considered low priority and wll not be actioned at present.
Audl Vlsu

The church sound system Is mony decades old and is at the end of its useful life. There
is random interference and background noise Ihrough the speakers which is
distrocting in seNices. We have been considering this problem over the past few years
and have a 2-year-old quote for replacement. In the meantime. we have found out
that we may be able lo get free intemel conneclion from True speed 05 a community
facility. Stuart Is investigaling this for us. With Poul's departure we also need lo improve
our ability to provide electronic accompaniment for hymn singing. We therefore
propose purchosing a comprehensive new audio-visual system. this wll cost £&lOk
and should Set us up for the foreseeable fulure. A pfoF)osoI wlll be brought to the next
church council.
Inor works and
rchase5
During the year we had a minor woler leok In the kitchen. which was eventually
traced, after much head scratching and disrnontling. to the hot water inlet on the
combi boiler. This w05 repaired with no serious damage lo the kitchen fabric. A vinyl
overlay for the church sign wrth Andrew's details has been ordered ond will be
installed 500n. The copier is showing its oge. and a new printer I copier will be
purchased and installed.
Keeping the building in good condition is a shared responsibility among us all. let Ken
or Edward know If you spot onylhing that needs ottention.
Ken Young & Edward Chaplin
